Marathon Weekend 2025

For anyone wondering why the Michigan people are so anxious for nice (warm) weather.... here's an article about our winter sunshine from this past January. When I was a kid I had a cousin who would track sunny days on her calendar in the winter. That was days with an hour of full-sun and little-to-no clouds. And one year we were in the low teens in mid-February (starting in December.)

A couple of years ago, my friend and I were in Florida in December and we kept saying that we were like plants. Every time the sun came out, we automatically turned and/or moved to soak it up.

I grew up in WNY, where I swear it was grey and overcast for 6 months straight every year.

Yep, same in WNY. Lake effect clouds for the whole area, but snow mostly to the south of where I lived.

Okay, now I've got to know where you lived. I'm from Buffalo.

Same! Go Bills :teeth:

My dad grew up in Buffalo (Amherst) and now lives in FL as well. But some things have stuck 😂

There is a local 5K being planned for Super Bowl Sunday named "Just One Before I Die." I normally wouldn't consider doing a 5K (a distance that I dislike immensely) in February ('cause we're in Buffalo), but I have to admit that the name is calling to me. We'll see!

Must be getting late in the training cycle, everyone is on edge. :-) My wife just headed out for her last long run and was spewing fire about it all day yesterday and this morning...Dopey is stupid, this is stupid, why are we doing this, we're not doing this next year, mixed in with several other colorful words. 🏃‍♀️

Your post made me think of this video from NYC marathon.

I don't want to prolong how much concern changing weather should be to inexperienced or experienced runners but wanted add two almost contradictory thoughts...
  • Last minute changes to the forecast can be disruptive, both emotionally and physically to many people
  • You got this! No, the weather may not be perfect, but you will get through it with a few relatively simple modifications and have a wonderful experience.
Be smart but don't give in to the fear

Do yall have recommendations for a power bank to use when running? My phone almost died and I was wondering what would be best. I have one but it’s kinda heavy. I have a set of fuelrods sitting in my Amazon cart along with one that sticks to the back of my phone. Just curious what others use. I have a iPhone 14 Pro Max

OMG that name is awesome! But go CHIEFS!

Thankfully my Samsung lasts through all the races easily, but my aunt brought a fuelrod when she ran with her iPhone a few years ago. Because they have fuelrod machines on property, she was able to swap out spent for charged at the machines without having to carry more than one device.

No power bank suggestions as I’ve never needed one mid-race, but have you tried turning off things that drain the battery and aren’t needed? Just turning off WiFi can help so it stops searching for a signal in places there isn’t one at WDW. I also used to turn off cellular data during marathons to stop the drain of signal searching. I close every app but the one I use for intervals + music. I’ve seen others say they put their phones in Airplane mode, but I never needed to go that far. I still had 40% or more by the end of 6+ hours.

ETA: for reference, I’m still rocking a 2nd Gen SE, circa 2020, with a battery life around 74%.

I’ll check that out. I was running YouTube for a bit but that was only app running. I didn’t have a problem earlier this year either. But I fully charged it before I did my marathon.

THIS. Especially making sure you don't have the MDE app running in the background.

Also this. Yep.

I also download all of my playlists that I think I might want so I don't have to deal with buffering/bandwidth issues.

If you were running Youtube, that means your screen was probably on, and if it was in your pocket and the screen was facing your body, the touching combined with a damp environment (sweat) can make the touchscreen do all sorts of things....it's something that happened with my music this summer. You can also turn your screen brightness down all the way, AND I'm pretty sure there's some sort of power-save mode where it makes the screen black and white (not something I would do.)

I'm using a 2 year old 13pro and the battery isn't great on it, but I'm also not worried about it dying during the race. There's not much reason to have my phone out other than a few pics/selfies in places I take one every year (backside of tree of life, castle, etc) during the marathon AND when I refresh the runner tracking to check my buffer and figure out what the slowest I can go is.

Nothing drains my iPhone battery like an open MDE lol! I close that one out ASAP any time I use it.

I tend to forget that people stream on their phones. I’m old and still insist on owning my tunes, so all of my music is either downloaded iTunes purchases or transfers from CDs. Which is why I have no storage left for iOS updates.
Priorities.

I’m old school too. I have this fear that streaming won’t work on race day so having everything in my phone soothes that fear. I also run races with my phone in airplane mode. I’ve had spammers call me in the middle of races, and family butt dials. Airplane mode takes care of all of that.

Before we

Before we got unlimited data 2 years ago, I would purchase my music. Now I have Apple Music and create my own playlists.

I usually run with a focus mode on, that way I can still get texts/calls from my husband and he can track me on Find My. But I wont be bothered with random notifications!

I got a pair of Anker MagSafe charging banks. They’re very light and stick to the back of your phone. I just got a new phone so I’m not planning to bring one, but it’s my go-to park charger now.
