Marathon Weekend 2016

From what I read, he had a run training runs previously in these (or this style) shoe. My guess is this was a finished prototype and if all went well would be released after the race (clever marketing). I also read this shoe was only engineered to be run at a 2:45 marathon (how accurate this news bit is, I'll never know).

But to run in shoes in that shape at an almost record breaking pace is awesome.

What's surprising to me is that it goes against what I thought was rule #1 for race day: Don't try anything new!

I suspect he did do enough training in them beforehand to feel comfortable wearing them on race day. The issue with prototypes, well, one of the issues, is there is less consistency between each pair so they might have used a slightly different adhesive formula or amount and while that wouldn't change the feel of the shoe from the runner's perspective it would cause a failure from a manufacturing position.

Think of it like a slight change to a part on an F1 car. They test and model it enough to feel confident it will work in a race situation but the only way to really know is to use it in a race situation.

Speaking of records, anyone know what the course record is for the marathon at Disney? Sub 2:10?

According to this article:

1995 – Leonid Shvestov, of Russia, sets the (still-standing) course record at 2:11:50. Additionally, the course was changed to include mileage through Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park. Another perk of the 1995 WDW Marathon? Race Organizers were given 75 spots to the Centennial Running of the Boston Marathon – 22 to the all age-group winners, and the remaining issued randomly to finishers (there was no elite division for the 1995 running).

Good points and analogy. I'm just surprised they didn't use a "minor" marathon instead of a major like Berlin to "test a prototype".

Lesson learned for all of us: when Nike asks us to test a prototype at the Disney marathon, just say no! :)

Makes you wonder; had the soles not slipped out, would he have broken the world record? Berlin is mostly favored as the place to happen.

Is it weird that the most interesting part of this to me is that the course ever went through Blizzard Beach? :scratchin

I'm with you - I read that and thought that would be a neat addition/change. I've never been in that water park.

I wonder - a la Expedition Everest - if they would allow you to go down the flume ride?
(I know, I know...then you'd be soaking wet. I didn't say I've worked through all the details yet :teeth: )

I am not running the marathon, but my BF is. Do you actually ride Everest during the run? Are there other fun things like this?

I seem to remember listening to a podcast on the history of the Disney Marathon. I think that may have been when they used the"Snow Machines" bubble blowers to simulate running through snow. It was neat for the first couple of participants but as you got back farther in the field it became treacherous running across a stretch of pavement that had been getting covered in soap bubbles for a couple hours.

The course doesn't actually take you on everest. However if you reach everest after it's open you can go for a ride on it. It's probably the ride closest to the course. You get to studios later so it's open for most everyone. I guess in theory you could run down and ride everest or rock and roller coaster if time permitted. You also hit world showcase after it's open so he could do something in there too.

Going into my first full at Disney in 2013 my only goal was to finish, sure I didn't want to finish in 7 hours but if I came in at 5,6 or 6 1/2 hours I didn't care I just wanted to enjoy the experience which was a first for me as well as not get hurt.I finished just in under 6 hours as the 2013 full was pretty warm and I walked a lot in the second half.To this day that's still my favorite race as the heat just made me and other runners on the course struggle as we got closer to the end and the sun got progressively warmer, but for whatever reason the heat just made it special,it just felt like we were on this quest to finish, the encouragement from fellow runners and spectators was great and since it was the 20th anniversary of the race the medal was epic and still my favorite. This was also my first race, not first marathon, first race,no 5K's,10K's or half marathons before for me,so I went straight for the biggie. After that I started doing more and more races and by the 2014 Disney full I had cut 40 minutes from my 2013 time, last year I did Goofy and I knew my time was not going to be amazing but I was still happy with it,it was right in the middle between the 2013 and 2014 times.I"m doing 2 fulls this season, obviously Disney and the Space Coast,I really think I can finish one of these in under 5 hours,I know I'm not fast and my finish time is far from being a big deal to me usually but it would still be cool if I could finish just one of these with a 4 in the front,I mean I know I can do halfs in just over 2 hours but fulls are another story and finishing it in even 4:59 would be amazing.

Great job on your first race. You do realize you are a little crazy for making a marathon as your first race though, right. :scared::-)

Kipchoge said it started bothering him during the first kilometer. And direct from Nike:

“As he has done in previous races, Eliud was testing a prototype racing flat which we’ve been working on together for several months,” said T.J. Crawford, a spokesman for Nike, which sponsors Mr. Kipchoge. “As with any prototype, elements can sometimes go wrong. On this occasion, the sockliner didn’t work. As in all innovation, we will learn quickly from mistakes.”

There is a big difference here. Nike is one of his sponsors and they probably pay him enough to support his whole family. So when they ask you to run in a new shoe for a race, you do it.

Last year we just happened to be at disney world for a week beginning with marathon weekend. We arrived after the half, but chose the studios as our first full day on Sunday. Watching runners coming out of the park while we waited for park opening got me thinking that I needed to return in 2016 to run it... (It'll be my first). Anyways, we went straight to RnR and were on the first train... Along with a race participant. We let him get in the front seat. It was really cool to see a runner get there just in time to ride RnR with the first group.

Thank you!! It was definitely a bit crazy to just go straight for the biggie but I really knew I could finish it,I had pretty much always ran 4-5 miles at the gym several times a week since I was in high school and in the year prior to running it had gone out on 8-10 mile runs to just test the water on longer runs, all with the intention of doing the Disney full, and that was before even starting to train more consistently in the months prior to the race.I thank Lee Hoedl and a couple other Youtubers marathon videos that gave me the desire to do it.

Boston is a hard one to get onto this year with the cutoff being a BQ -2:28. It will be interesting to see if this trend continues. If I had run 2 minutes lower than my required time, I would have felt very confident about getting in. I guess whenever I start getting close to those paces, I should just go for a BQ -5:00. One day....

Screw that - with those high requirements I'm just gonna target BBQ - its tastier. ;)

I agree. Those videos of the races do get you fired up. I also like watching Eddie McCoy's videos as well. He does a lot of Disney races and does a video for each.

Being from MA I have to run this race one day. I would love to qualify because it would be cool to say I did, but if I to do it for charity I will.

I know he's hosting the marathon show and has been a guest dozens of times on the mickey miles podcast but I've never seen one of his videos.are they on youtube?

I ran it for charity in 2013.... and came back for 2014. I have to say I love Boston! One of these days I just want to go to watch it and be part of the party as well. See the link below in my sig if your interested in seeing my perspective. Im sure being from the area, you have heard a lot of crazy stories.

I'm from the area as well and people always ask when I'm going to run Boston. I always say when I know I can raise $5,000 to fun for a charity I will. It's just so hard to get into either way really.

But I do love watching every year and hearing the stories.

It's that time again. September Monthly Miles... What you got?
