July- Fitness Independence for Hakuna Matata!

Bunnyfoo -HILLS - practice! It will come eventually. Sometimes I shorten my stride so that I use more steps but quicker, try that or try the other way, make your stride longer. I've used both but for me the short one seems the best. I remember so many people complaining about the Contemporary hill. I found it a breeze, but I had trained on a much longer and steeper hill.

Did nothing today. Stressed these past 2 days and have not slept well. Needed to recover today. I hope I sleep tonight.

Economy is on my mind-- a lot with many things coming up to pay for in the near future. Wedding, trips, oil, taxes...UGG

Well maybe a good nights sleep and an early walk will help. Off to bed, I'm thankful I have a pretty secure job with benefits.

thanks for listening.

First off...BABY PHOENIX COMES HOME TODAY!!!!! I was woken up last night by a text coming into my phone at 3 am. It was a picture of a beautiful baby boy and Jenny told me that he was getting ready to come home in a few hours!! I have yet to meet him since they keep the neonatle ward on "lockdown". I will meet him sometime this weekend!! YAY for Pheonix!!!! Again, thank you all for your prayers and PD!!

Denise - Ditto on what Dave said! You need a day trip to WDW! Even if you can physically be there you can still go virtually! Have you looked at the Google Earth program yet? Or go to youtube.com and look up videos of your favorite rides!! The mouse always makes me feel better when I'm down! ::MickeyMo

Lynn - I'm also a Kayano lover. My ankle problems vanished when I got my first pair and I've been hooked ever since. Now the only time I have probs is when they need replaced!

Vicky - What you are referring to is called hill repeats and I've heard they do wonders for your speed. I've found a steep hill near me on one of my many 4 miler routes and I've been thinking that I might try some hill work although I've never really cared to before. I used to run a 9 min mile before my surgery, but I can't seem to get back to it. Let me know if you decide to tackle it and I'll keep you posted on mine.

Erica - Hope your toe is doing better!!

Dave - How are the cross country shoes??

To the rest...remember..."A dream is a wish your heart makes"!
(Sorry, I'm in a very Disney mood today!)

Denise - Don't worry about the economy. No point. You can't do a darn thing about it. You can cut back if your personal economy isn't great, but the rest of it....well, we have all lived in an economy like this before and we will all do it again. It's the nature of the beast. But remember this, we are not in a recession, our economy is still growing. :thumbsup2

Eva - Great news about Phoenix!!! :yay:

Lynn and Scott - The babies are leaving. aRe you going to suffer from empty nest syndrome???

Vicky - I don't have hills. Thus, one of the reasons for the dreadmill.

The Voyager (aka dreadmill another Wisher recommended a new name) is up and running. Well, it's not running right this second, but it is running. It is pretty cool, but now, I am thinking I need a tv in my new gym.

Doing a quick Friday fly-by. Super busy at work with a major project due next week.

Out for a 4+ miler last night and it was over the top humid. Just gearing up for next weekend. I'm doing a race on Sat. (6+ miler)(they call it a 1/4 marathon) & Sun. (10K).

I also got new shoes. I'm on the 4th pair of the Alchemy7 (Mizuno).
I see we have alot of Kayano lovers. I'm a strong disliker. I have worn other Asics & Sauconys. The Kayanos are the only shoe to give me knee pain. Just goes to show you why there are so many types of shoes available.

Connie, enjoy your new toy.

Eva, glad to hear baby Phoenix is coming home today.

Going to the cottage for the weekend. Happy training & stay hydrated. I think the warm temps and humidity are with us through the weekend......Sue

I was up early and ran a practice 5k. My time was 29:30 (which breaks down to about a consistent 9:30 mile if I calculated right). I've managed to maintain a pace that will put me at or below a 30 minute 5k every day this week, so hopefully I'll be able to break it at the race tomorrow. Tomorrow's race is typically one of the largest in town (about 200 participants), but there's another race in the nearest big city so that may cut it down somewhat this year. My first goal as always is just to finish but once again I'd really like to break 30 (or 31) minutes at a race, since I've done it so much in practice, but it'd be nice to have it recorded. The morning runs have worn me out (I came back and took a nap this morning). Luckily, I discovered caffinated Propel and that has helped some.

Eva the shoes are designed for cross country racing but have lots of the features of a good walker. After 2 walks of 4 miles I'm really loving them. For under $40 I'm excited about them.

Denise hang in their darlin, you are very important to us and having you for a buddy is priceless.

Connie glad your tready and you are bonding.

Margie:hug:

I had a super walk this morning, I'm feeling better and better every day and I'm so glad since that dehydration knocked me for a loop for a while.

Have a super day everyone

Hydrated Panda:hippie:

Propel with caffeine? That sounds very promising! I usually mix propel and gatorade, but for races, I need a little caffeine, and I don't drink coffee before races, I have been eating a few expresso beans (chocolate covered, of course).

Funny thing about the baby robins, when I cannot find them, I am sad they are gone, and I miss all the noise they make, then when I do find them again, I think "Why are you still here? Why haven't you flown off yet?". Is it the same with kids? (I have only the 4 legged variety).

I am beginning to think that my knee pain is IT band problem, rather than the runner's knee problem I have had for years! The pain seems to be more on the outside of my knee, rather than under and behind my knees as it usually is. That would now give me all three most common running injuries - PF, runners knee, and IT band syndrome (or whatever it is called)!!! It has gotten worse the past 2 days that I have been wearing the Saucony's for the short walks, I will go back to the Asics-Kayano's and see if it goes away again.

Tomorrow is a 10K race, so only did a short dog walk around the block (1.25 miles). We will see how the race goes, hopefully better than training has been lately!

Have a great day!

I think the Propel with caffeine is new. It was on special (buy one get one free) at CVS this week. According to the label and website it has as much caffeine as a cup of tea plus vitamins B12, B6, and B3 and all the "nutrients" of normal propel. It taste more like very watered down gater than the normal Propel.

Lynn, Good luck with the 10k tomorrow!

Jen you will ROCK in your race, with your training, and the excitement of a race you will do well.

Mega busy at work, interfering with basement work LOL, had court today last min, so it shot the day, did get soem house chores done and packing,we are all set for our 10 K tomorrow, hope it is cool,

Sorry I have missed what ya all are up to, life has been hectic, Lynn really is great about keeping me together.

More tomorrow, be god have fun and enjoy

Long day yesterday :rotfl:

I did get to the gym for my regular lower body workout, bike, & stretches.
I do my longer walks on Saturday, but if I don't get rid of this headache and get some sleep an early morning walk will not happen :confused3

More thunder storms in the forecast for today. :rolleyes1

Eva - We are PTL that baby Phoenix is coming home!

Scott & Lynn - :woohoo: 10k race

Well, what they don't think of - Propel with caffeine!

Denise We can relate, but have learned it is a waste of time and energy to worry about it. :grouphug:

Did some scrap booking last night. It is fun, but it is way too time consuming and expensive for me to do on a regular basis. :upsidedow

My new Brooks NightLife Jacket came today. It is Kwel ... You look like a Bumble Bee attacked by Lightening Bugs. :goodvibes

Margie that made me laugh about the Bee Jacket. That will go great with our wish colors.

Scott, Lynn and Eva good luck on your races. I think I'm finally going to get to race on the 9th of Aug. That will be my first competitive race since the 10K Classic last Oct.

Oil prices are dropping, or pump prices here have dropped from a high last week of $4.14 to last night on the way homne it was $3.95. It's a start. Now if that trend will continue.

I'm off for a light workout and then some marketing and finally work.

Have a wonderfull day y'all.

Walking Panda:hippie:

:hippie: Do like my jacket-I wanted one since it came out. Where is your Race on August 9th? :goodvibes

No walk this morning. Headache is gone, but I feel drained. Maybe I can get one in later or take my little guy out while DD & DSIL is at the movies tonight. :thumbsup2

Our prices dropped from $4.24 to $4.09 yesterday! Hummmmm...I can remember gas wars where gas was .35 per gallon - no I am NOT kidding, just old. :lmao:

Have a Great Day Everyone, Enjoy all the Moments - Racers, and keep hydrated!

Margie I remember using my school lunch money each week to buy gas for the entire week, including a dragging main on Saturday night!!! Lunch money was only $2! -- Bumble bees and lightning bugs!!! :goodvibes That's just way tooo cool...warm...neato! Got to take a look at that one!

Scott I will try to be god, but I think I will have to settle for merely good!! :rotfl:

Propel and caffeine. Hmmm, interesting. That certainly flies in the face of all that, "Caffeine is a drug that has no beneficial side effects." Knew they were blowing cigarrette smoke all along.....:rotfl:

Jen, Lynn, Scott! Have a great race!!!

Did a 5K on the tready this morning. Did some more hill work. Got to be able to do those hills as the Palo Duro Canyon race is in October. It is called, "the Grand Canyon of Texas" and it is truly awe-inspiring. The race is a trail race and the trail is just about good enough for deer to walk single file. It has lots of hills - up and down. It's hard work, but a beautiful race.

OK, I'm back. Things are better today and they were yesterday too. I get in a funk now and then which is not my usual ways.

Mark and I went for an early am walk yesterday did 4 miles and we both felt way better - and all day too. We planned an early 5 miles this morning but the house needs to be brought up to speed, I have a lot of cooking to do and it's hot so early am is best. Mark is painting a tv wall unit and cabinets, he grouted the tile for the pellet stove so we're getting things done.

Last year when I was training a lot we I had gone to dream dinners to pre-make food for the month so I could concentrate on training and not stress about making dinner. So now I make my own "dream dinners". We go to Sams club, purchase in bulk and spend a day cooking and freezing. Today it's Lasagna. Last week it was Chinese Pie and another casserole. I'll make 4-6 of them depending on how thick I make them. All with turkey and low fat cheese so we don't add on the pounds in the process. It's hot but in the long run, it's way easier during the work week. I grab something out of the freezer, have it thaw in the oven during the day and set the oven timer to start cooking while I'm on my way home from work. Of course, some of them go to the kids too. Their poor and rather than handing over cash, I give them a dinner. It's cheaper and they DO appreciate it.

Thanks to everyone for their upbeat comments. I am better and sleep has made me a lot less stressed.

Take care, no walking for me except up and down to and from the basement on the way to the freezer. It's beastly out there.

Nice having friends to cheer me on!:cheer2:

Denise you mean a lot to us my sister, so glad to hear that you are back on the up swing. You are so much more than you realize but I have a feeling that several people around you know just how special and wonderfull you are.

Hi everyone, sorry but I'm off to work and no time to say hi to each of you but you guys are all aces.

Working Panda:hippie:

So the race went VERY WELL this morning.

Just got out of the shower and am exhausted, but I had to go ahead tell people who would understand.

Two things: 3rd in Age Group (and this was a larger race for my area around 200 runners)

and

Under 28 minutes (27:37 to be exact) which was my goal for the entire summer; watch out 26 minutes I coming after you lol

ETA: I'll post a full report later

Congratulations!!! Princess!!! Way to go, kickin' a 5K like that!!!!

Denise So glad you are feeling better with more sleep and less stress. Never forget, we ARE Hakuna Matata!!! No worries! :grouphug:

How's it going, everyone else???

NICE!!! We have a 5k here in town on 8/14. Mark is designing the back of the shirt for our team members at work. Some are runners, joggers, walkers and stroller (slow walkers) it's a family fun 5k.

Remember, it counts double for miles when you do a race! Thanks for helping the team.

signing off, thunder storms are looming, oh and I made 6 Lasagna's for the freezer - Who needs supper tonight? Come on over and pick one up!

WOW Lots to catch up on,

1st OFF JEN YOU ROCK GIRL!!!! Way to go congrats, I am old and slow and there are some fast old guys here, so my mantra is “hey I am out there doing it and not watching”

Our race went well, It was very hot and slowed me down, was doing well untill the course went out to the hinterlands , no shade at all on the high prarrie, antelope and missle sites, The race was on the FE Warren AFB, well done, Lynn was best in her Cat. I did average a 10:34 pace, and was very happy with that.

We could have been more prepaired, I.e. more sleep, dopey new computer was giving me fits with driver issues, I hate computers, got it figured out today., cut into my sleep time last night.

No shower yet, changed the oil in the Jeep, will go to Frontier days later today and are planning a major work day on the basement tomorrow, Looks like I will be traveling on Monday, want to get back to see the Thunderbirds Wend say morn,

Court went well on Friday, another one bites the dust.

Good job team getting those miles in .

Denise, that is kinda what we d with Sams Club stuff, have fin with the house project, we texture the basement tomorrow. Lasagna sounds great.

Connie do try the best ya can to be good I know it is not fun at times. LOL

Dave have fun at work,

next race is Susan Komen 5K, then the DL½. Then TOT , then WDW Yeah!!!!!

Gotta get stuff together for our trip in a week, called Credit card CO’s to let them know we will be outta the country.

Later Kiddies, can’t wait to meet those of you we have yet to meet, that will be KEWL!!! And to see those familiar faces will be very KEWL!!!!

Scott it was one of those "old guys" that got me my sub 28 time and 10:30s are great. Hey, that's what I was running 3 weeks ago. I keep trying to convince my parents to at least try walking the 5ks, but they don't want to do it if they can't run it. ugh.

The morning runs paid off well. As did the lesson from last week not to start near the front.

So here's my full race report.

This course is really nice in my opinion. No really big hills, but some nice changes in elevation. I don't like perfectly flat courses. My legs get bored.

I started off nice and steady and stayed pretty much middle of the pack passing people here and there but relatively consistent. I hit mile 1 at 8 min 40sec-ish. That's awfully fast for me. I occasionally run sub-9min miles but I usually feel like I'm going to die. I don't. The clock must have been started late. I just keep going at my current pace.

Mile 2 goes well. I actually grab water at the stop run my the wonderful children from the Hebrew School at the synagogue (sp?). I hit mile 2 marker at 17:35 ish. Somethings has to be wrong. I yell to the race volunteer that the clock is off. I feel waaay too good to have rune 2 sub 9:30 minute miles.

Mile 3 it seems like everyone is running single file. The race is spreading out. I hit the 3 mile mark at 26:15 ish. I normally sprint the last .1 but I try and legs just don't feel like it. I'm well past where I need to be to meet my personal goal of a sub-30 5k so I decide just to keep running normally. My nearest competitor is a good 15 seconds ahead and is a 30 something army reservist. There's no point in trying to catch him. Well apparently fate had other ideas. All of a sudden a just passed middle aged man (late 50s/early 60s, reminds me of my dad) appears at my side as slow down from the attempted sprint. He says to me, "You aren't going to let an old man beat you, are you young lady?" So he and I sprint neck and neck for the finish line. I finish 1 and 1/2 seconds before him at 27:28 officially. I then proceed to dry heave a couple of times just past the finish line. I also through off my mother who was watching by telling her before the race that I wouldn't finish until at 28 minutes and probably not until 30. So she had just started towards the finish line.

Like I said earlier 3rd in my age group and 89th out of 180 overall.

My mom and I went and saw the Dark Knight and went to the running store this afternoon. So it's been a great day.

I'll be heading to my grandparents tomorrow. So I'll be running but I probably won't post again until Tuesday.
So
