July- Fitness Independence for Hakuna Matata!

We did our 10 mile training walk today. Since we slept in a bit we had a hot walk.

Ok I getting anal now about this hydration/dehydration thing. It's amazing how quickly you can get into hydration trouble. I never really paid much attention to it since I felt I was fine staying hydrated all the time. So today I tried a little experiment.

When I was ready to go on the walk, my urine was clear. When we completed 3 miles we stopped for a potty stop and a few swallows of water, urine was clear with a slight yellow time. After walking 10 miles in the heat and sharing a 30 oz bottle of water, urine was dark yellow which means I was dehydrated. That quick you can get into trouble. Granted I'm still playing catch up. After 2 bottles of water, 2 glasses of water at lunch and 2 bottles of G2 I'm back to clear and feeling normal again. The darker the urine the more whipped I feel. Hummm think there is a connection?

Moving right along now.

I actually think that Erica recovered quicker than I did today. After lunch I was comatose in the reclinner and she was off showering.

Eva a good athletic shoe shouldn't need to be broken in. It is a good idea to take a short run/walk in them before going long just to make sure thay fit good. I have taken a brand new pair out of the box to a race and realized when I got there and changed from my flip flops into the racers that they were both left feet.

Sue, I never expected it either, just kinda caught me by surprise. One of the problems is also that it has just recently turned very hot. We had been having 50 to 60 degrees in the morning and not hot till later, now it's 90 by 8am here.

Everyone have an awesome evening.

Lynn is really working hard on the basement and because of her hard work we might get the walls textured Friday, that would be KEWL, then painting and bookcase building, etc etc etc.....

Thank You ... Thank You ... Thank You for all the Sweet Birthday Greetings! :grouphug:

Have not been feeling so very good this week
After not sleeping for two nights I over slept this morning - did the mad dash to the gym, and managed my full workout at a slower pace. :upsidedow

:hippie: Hummmmm 'Hydration' is truly important! :scared:

Erica, Way to Go Girl! You are doing so good :goodvibes

Did I all ready ask for an update on our Team's injury list or just think I did? :confused3

Michigan is going to be HOT the rest of the week (it is still 85 degrees right now)...it's early morning walks or the Dreadmill!

Panda, hydration is definitely important in the heat and humidity. Here it's been in the low 80s when I go for my run around 7:30 pm so I understand what you mean about dehydrating fast.

Today I did 4 miles in just under 40 minutes. I also still had the energy to sprint at the end. Hopefully this focus on consistency will pay off. And in other exciting news my mom and I are going to the local running store on Saturday after my race!! Yay for shopping!!

Just a quick drive by.

Mark had to be up early and neither one of us slept great so I headed off by myself at 5:30 for my 4 miles. Done and off to the shower.

Oh, got my hair cut last night and now I'm a brunette, - change is good!

Good morning dear friends. Since we did 16 miles over the last two days I'm taking a rest day today. I think after a good rest day I'll feel more excited about doing my workout.

Walk/run/rest/love/be strong team mates.

Dave I felt the same, work stuff on my mind, so in a little earlier.

I had a tough workout with my PT yesterday. I told him that I was having trouble running up this hill on my route so we worked more on my cardio which unfortunately involved lots of jumping jacks and burpies. Funny how times moves slowly when one is jumping :rotfl:

I finally booked one hotel for January 2009. DF and I are probably going to do a split stay. But I'm still undecided on the second hotel. We were able to use the marathon code which was nice. It treats the reservation as a package so we only had to put a $200 deposit down. My TA told me that if I booked as a room only, I would have had to pay a one night deposit at the highest rate for 2008 since the 2009 rates aren't out yet.

Well have a great day everyone! I think it's going to be a long day here ... lots of people who are in bad moods. There are papers and plans scattered all over the floor which I assume have been left for me to clean up :sad2:

Hello Team!!

Well...I just got back from a 5 miler. My fastest mile was 9:23...not great, but better than I have been doing. Heat really zaps my energy levels! I've never wanted, to nor felt the need to (since I fartlek), but I think I'm going to find a track to do my speedwork at.

Denise - Yay for new hair!! I recently cut all mine off..it feels good doesn't it!

Margie - Hope you feel better!! Get lots of rest!

Jennifer - Did you register for the marathon? If so what was your projected finish time?

Dave - Thanks for the info about the shoes. I have run LR's (close to) right out of the box with my last two pair. I had read somewhere that you shouldn't do that, but I had no probs. Now I know...and knowing if half the battle! LOL

Erica - Keep up the great work with the training and weight loss!!!

To the rest of you...happy hydration!!! :drinking:

Good morning Team!

Just got a call....the dreadmill will be here, today. I wonder if I will need assistance putting it together??? ho-hum

Funny thing though, I have really been taking care of that achilles, icing and elevating, etc. And today, when my dreadmill is to arrive it feels....not so bad! :rotfl: Yay for new toys! :woohoo:

Guess, I better get myself in gear to start the day. Jammies are my favorite indoor wear, though.

Villains Rock, no marathon's in my thinking yet (unless you count the far distant before I'm 30 I wanna type of thinking). I'm training for the Princess 1/2 in March, so hopefully a nice gradual buildup on mileage starting around Christmas and by then my times should have stabilized.

Also, can some one tell me how you get one of the cute little Hakuna Matata icons in your siggy?

Thanks,
Jen

Good Morning Team!

My new shoes for training are Asics Kayano's, this is the first time I have worn Asics, I also got some lighter weight Saucony's for racing. I have never worn Saucony either. I have never switched shoes for training, however, I am thinking of getting another pair of something from the running wearhouse sale and trying that. I have always had a lighter pair of shoes for racing - which originally happened by accident, I put the timing chip we bought on a new pair of shoes that happened to be lighter than my other pair, and I did not want to take the chip off, so I saved them for racing - they were Pearl Izumi shoes. I have also worn New Balance and Mizumi shoes. I really do not have a favorite shoe at this point.

We still have 2 baby robins in the back yard, they seem to be taken care of by only one adult now, so I am assuming that the other adult is now with the first bird to fly off.

Erica - good job on the milage!!!

I finally had a decent walk/run today, I made the 6 miles with a pace of 15:09 my goal is now an average pace of 15 which I was doing before the Minnie, so I know it is a doable pace for me. I am trying to walk at a pace of 15:30 or better, and today I was doing that a good portion of the time. My running spurts take my average up a bit, and also make up for the dog potty breaks and dog water breaks.

Connie - have fun on the treadmill:lmao:

Have to get going, I, too, have a hair cut appt. this morning!

Have a great day!

Hi everybody!!

I did a super hot 4 miler this afternoon!

My totals for this week are: 17 miles for me and 3 miles for Mike
And a total of 5 hrs 24 min

I am facing PT for that pesky toe. It seems I have a neuroma and a joint that has a locked capsule...toe joint won't bend. At least this is fixable with PT, and I know why it hurts!

Hope all is well with everybody!

Erica:)

Good morning team.

I get to play with new shoes this morning. I bought some Brooks Mach 10s as candidates to be my racing shoe. They are actually a cross country racer but have a lot of the features a walking shoe requires so I'm trying them out.

Connie, happy treadmill. Have fun with your new toy.

Lynn and Eva happy shoes to you guys also.

For my other walker friends I got an email yesterday form the guy at the shoe company that is developing performance walking shoes. The idea is still a go and we should be seeing interesting stuff in the near future.

Everyone have a super day, I'm off to play with new shoes.

Walking Panda:hippie:

Got up and out for a run, I am doing a GPS, tracking land Nav class today, me thginks it will be a long day, will see how the students do, LOL for computer guys they get pretty frustrated when they think computer LOL

Will put them through their paces.

If I get some KEWL pics I will share,

Congrats on the new skins for the footsies, hope they work well.

Gotta Run, hey I already did that LOL

Hi everyone! We're suppose to get rain today but I haven't seen anything yet. It has been muggy though so if it rains, I hope it will cool everything down.

Does anyone have suggestions on the best way to run up a hill? I have one on my weekend course - it's a gradual climb and not too steep but I seem to have such a difficult time with it. I don't know why since it's in the early part of my run. Should I spend one of my running days just running up that hill?

Erica - WTG with all the miles! Good luck with the PT and your toe :)

Jen - To get the HK pic, go into your user CP, edit signature and then add in:
http://s244.photobucket.com/albums/gg37/scotth5150/th_HM2-3.jpg Make sure you put the [IMG ] [/IMG] tags around the address.

Eva - Awesome pace! I have some (a lot) of work to do to get my pace under 10 m/m. I do my speedwork at a track as well but I find it feels a little more boring than running through my neighbourhood.

Connie - How's the treadmill?

Lynn - How do you like the Kayanos? I have those as well but haven't really tried running in anything else so I can't compare.

Have a great day everyone! Keep cool and stay hydrated :wave2:

Vicky, thanks for the info on adding the image. For some reason it says I'm not allowed to add an image to my signature.
No real suggestions about the hill climb. I live in a hilly area so they've always been in my route. The few things that have helped is some cross training focusing on the legs (I like resistance band based pilates for this) and practice.

I'm running in the mornings for the next few days. ugh. I have a morning race on Saturday so I want to get used to the difference. I definitely took longer to warm up and I felt stiffer, but the cooler weather was nice. I got in 3.5 miles in under 35 minutes. I've been able to pick up the pace to between 9:35 and 9:45 minute miles.

Stay cool and hydrated, everyone! I think the majority of the country is in a heat wave!

Good Morning Team!

Today is a cross training day, so I just did a short walk with the dogs this morning, decided not to go for a bike ride, so I will have to do an exercise tape later to make up for that.

The baby robins are harder to keep track of - they both disappeared last night, this morning early I found one, then one appeared on the bench in our front yard, just under the window next to the computer. I just found the second one in the back yard. They are flying quite well now, and I expect them to take off for good any time now. Then the dogs can have their back yard back!

I plan to have the drywall sanding done today, have about 3 hours to go - then it will be ready for texturing over the weekend. Then I will get to spend next week painting!

Vicki - Yesterday, I wore the Kayanos for a good 6 mile walk, for the first time in a week, my knee did not bother me! Today, I tried out the Saucony's I got for racing, as I was going for a short walk. Within 2 miles, my knee hurt again, and I got the pain I sometimes get in the side of my shin. I started to think that maybe I need the stability of the Kayanos (they are the first "stability" shoe I have used). So, I guess I am really liking the Kayanos now, although I seem to like any shoe after the first few walks. But I am thinking for the race this weekend, I will stick to the Kayanos for now, and work on the Saucony's a few more times before I make them my "race" shoes.

Connie - so, how was the treadmill?

Dave - good luck with the new shoes.

Erica - you are putting on sooooo many miles!!!! Good luck with the toe!

Have a great day! I need to get into the basement and start sanding!

Greeting Team Mates!

Sounds like the temperatures in the high 80’s – 90’s are sweeping the nation.
Someone said to me this morning they were going to enjoy it as it does not last long…Okay if you are a beach lover, but it is tough to work or exercise in.

Gym- upper body weight workout, ball crunches, bike, stretching this morning. When finished it was all ready in the mid 80’s and humid, so Hagen and I did not go for our usual walk. :rolleyes1

Eva - how is little Phoenix doing?

Vicky - when it's this hot it is nice to walk in the rain - just NO thunder storms! :scared1:
Connie – did you get the Dreadmill assembled.
Lynn – glad to hear the shoes are working for you.
Erica – nice week on your mileage!
Scott – Hummmmmm I need classes on all the techie stuff too, but have been a bit laid-back as I have a very adept DD to Just Do It for me…LOL but that has it’s shortcomings, as I have not seen my new digital camera since I got it! :confused3
:hippie: - hope the new shoes work for you :upsidedow

Bunnyfoo -HILLS - practice! It will come eventually. Sometimes I shorten my stride so that I use more steps but quicker, try that or try the other way, make your stride longer. I've used both but for me the short one seems the best. I remember so many people complaining about the Contemporary hill. I found it a breeze, but I had trained on a much longer and steeper hill.

Did nothing today. Stressed these past 2 days and have not slept well. Needed to recover today. I hope I sleep tonight.

Economy is on my mind-- a lot with many things coming up to pay for in the near future. Wedding, trips, oil, taxes...UGG

Well maybe a good nights sleep and an early walk will help. Off to bed, I'm thankful I have a pretty secure job with benefits.

thanks for listening.
