Itchy!!! Poison Ivy Help!!! Please...

Cold compresses. Takes out some of the swelling so lowers the itching. Good luck, I know it's awful!!

Sorry your are going though this CB. Ouch! :(

So how do you get it off the dog? :confused3

See, that's frustrating. They gave me a steriod pill (some 21 pill pack for 6 days) and a cream.. but I still itch!!! argh!!!!!!!!!!!! And I have my DH and kids on itch alert..they can hit me if I itch!

Sounds like the Dr. prescribed a Medrol pack. That is a steroid but may not be strong enough to get the job done. If you are allergic to Poison Ivy you may need a stronger course of steroids such as decreasing doses of prednisone in order to resolve this. My DH has this same problem. If you haven't responded to the treatment prescribed you need to see the Dr. again. I'm sure he thinks you're doing fine and it's all taken care of. It is not going away by itself and will continue to worsen. Good luck.

DH has washed and washed and washed and.. you get the idea.. poor baby, he comes in the house, straight to his kennel, out to potty, back to the kennel. I'm evil!!

Since she has already seen you in the office, maybe she could call something in.

Go buy some Zanfel. A little expensive at $30. for a small tube, but it's the ONLY thing that works. And it does work!!!!

I totally agree, this works better for me than any RX from the doctor!

I went to the DR last Thursday for what she thinks is PI that went systemic. I cannot believe how much it itched at first. I was put on Prednisone (SP?) for 6 days. I think the rash is healing but slowly. Hot baths made me itch really bad -- she suggested ice packs/cool rags. I am also taking Claritin daily. I may have to look for that Zanfel though.

Good luck!!

Zanfel!!!!!!!

DH got PI all the time and this is the only stuff that works. You may have to ask for it behind the counter bc it has been shoplifted in some places so they keep it behind the pharmacy counter, just in case you cant find it on the shelf.

okay folks.. still itching!!
went back to the doc Friday and got the shot in my keester (don't like needles at all, so this was rough!) she said it should kick in within a couple of hours... didn't work.. still itched Friday nite and all day Saturday.. been taking Benadryl pills, using Gold Bond Medicated (recommended by a friend).. still welting and itchy... so other than the fact that I must be totally alergic to this mess.. what can I do!! parts are looking like they are healing *(the back of my knees were RED for days and now are pink and the itching hasn't been bad there, but my arms and ankles are a mess... argh! and we are going to the beach in two weeks.. will it ever go away!!!!!!

Try the Zanfel, it get rid of the oils which is causing the itching. Only thing that gave DH any relief

Are you sure it's poison ivy? Maybe it's been misdiagnosed and the Dr. went off of what you said it is, instead of really taking a good look. :confused3

Have you been putting on a new sunscreen or lotion? Using a new laundry detergent? Eating different foods or fruits? Since the back of the knees, ankles & arms are more sensitive, it may have caused an irritation there that doesn't show up on the tougher areas of skin.

Started scratching last week and finally Friday couldn't take it anymore and went to the doc.. I have poison ivy on the back of my legs..have never had it before so I had no idea what it was (my dog runs in our woods, and sleeps behind my legs at nite, I never would have thought of it, but I guess I am alergic because nobody else is itching at all).. gee thanks! anyway the doc prescribed some meds and cream for the itching but I'm suffering.. any home remedies!!!! help!!!!!!!!!

Didn't read thru thread but
If anyone ever thinks or knows they came into contact with poison Ivy or Poison Oak, use
IVAREST
It is an amazing liquid that you use to "wash" the area to get the oil off of you....that is what spreads the itching and poison Ivy/Oak around. All gloves used for gardening or ANYTHING that touched the poison needs to be thrown away!
As far as itching goes, most use Benadryl, but you can also get something from a doctor if it is a bad case.
Sorry you got it, and YES, dogs can give it to you if they brush up against it.....meanwhile Poison Ivy (Oil) can literally last hundreds of years and still get people, amazing, so once again, throw away the garden gloves if you caught it that way.............
When my mom was a child she had a lovely picnic at a park and guess where they laid down, on Poison Ivy, right thru the sheet, she was covered head to toes...and too the hospital she went...Just awful!!!
Best of Luck, hope it is a Mild case and Leaves you Quickly!

I still say try the Benadryl and Cimetidine together (see my earlier post). Everyone I've ever told about this combination says they are cured in 1-2 days. Very cheap and effective.

imho, prednisone is the ONLY cure. I get poison ivy each summer, and one year, I went to Patient First, instead of my doctor. Big mistake. They gave me a shot in the hip of something, and it didn't work at all. Then I had to take a half day to see my real doctor. He gave me a scrip for prednisone and 1 day later, it had knocked the inflammation down.
