If you realize you have more points than you will ever need can you sell a portion of your points ?

Not unless they are in multiple contracts. You can't break a contract up.

you can rent your extra points.

if you don't need the money from renting. then you can use your points for a week to give to a local donation (remember this is not a tax donation) for charity or hospital.

Contracts can not be split. That is why many recommemd smaller contracts for large point purchases.
Example: Instead of one 450 point contract, buy 3 150 point contracts

As stated, you can't break up a contract and sell part of it. However, if Disney takes a contract on ROFR, they can and will break it up for resale.
