Interesting childrens names

OK...my co-workers DD just had her first born and it was a girl named...are you ready....MAISY BUTTERCUP!!!!! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: They posted the note about the joyous arrival and the name this past wednesday and we all just couldnt believe the what the poor child will have to deal with growing up.

I used to babysit a little girl named Sunshine Glory. That was long before unusual names became so common too. I always liked traditional simple names. My formal name is Tamera and no one ever pronouces it right and that ALWAYS spell it wrong. It's not that hard folks look at it: Tamera, rhymes with camera. I go by Tammy and you'd think that would be simple but apparently it's not. There must be 12 ways to spell Tammy

If I had a boy his name was going to be either Michael David or Daniel Joseph and my girl was going to be either Sarah Elizabeth or Molly Patricia. Sadly, due to cancer I had to have a hyst and no babie for me :guilty:

I don't know what my mother was thinking when she named me. My name is Maryke but not pronounced like that. You say it like Marie ka. I didn't like it growing up but I do like it alot now. We named my daughter Ayana pronounced I ana.

At my high school there were three brothers, Forest, Horizon, and Winter.

Interesting...

My friend just had a daughter and they named her Wynter.

Hi, we named our girls Isabella & Tatiana. I wanted them to have girlie, pretty names. I did go to school with Scotty Scott, William Williams, Campbell Soup, & Penny Ann Nickles(say it out loud fast). :confused3 Sbella

Wow! some of these names are hilarious!

My oldest a girl is Brianna, next is Kyle and lastly is Sean.

Now, please bear with me a minute here. My Dh's gmas' name was Rhea Anna, very close to Brianna. We did not do that on purpose, it just happened to be a name my Dh loved!

Kyle...my DH wanted to try and keep it celtic. Sean is definately of celtic origin.
My inlaws were mad when we did not name first son after my husband, his dad and his grandfather. Their name....Leon. Too old sounding my DH said.

Then when we had Sean, my FIL said he could never pronounce it cause it looks like See-an. I said, Sean Connery? ring a bell?
He promptly asked me, "Why an Irish name, we are not Irish!"
I said, "I am!"

So much fun....
Good luck to all the expecting moms! Post your baby names, please...would love to know what the new trend is going to be!

Lisa

I went to high school with a girl who named her baby girl VASELINE. No kidding.

I work at the local welfare office. Don't get me started! :rolleyes1

Im on board with you. Ive worked in hospitals for the last 10 years and the current one I work at is a Children's hospital. Dont even get me started on the odd names and spellings parents give their kids these days. Im just sure that almost everyone of them are on crack. Put down the crack pipe and open a baby name book.

The ones I really shake my head at are the ones who look like they couldn't be bothered to try to name their kid. And if they have twins, good golly. I have seen twins named Marc and Marco. Or Christaian and Christian B (no middle name, just the initial). You have nine months to pick a name, at least they could do is pick two.

Well, right now if you're hot and heavy into baby naming (we are, see counter below ;) ) The trends are wide but ever popular are Celtic names, names with 2 syllables ending in an -en or -an sound, and re-spelling popular names.

We are not big into the re-spelling trend but we decided on dd#1's name but dh couldn't stand that the word Mad would be in it, so she is Matalyn. dd#2 is Charlotte and #3 is still up in the air, but is a boy and most likely will be Corbin.

I understand about not wanting a smaller word spelled in a child's name... my DD's name is Loralei, pronounced and spelled Lora-lie, but I did not want lie in her name so I changed the lie to lei. So now we just politely corect when people call her Loralee, which is correct for the spelling.
I agree with unique names, but not respelling a common name.
I also like when girls have "boy" names.
I teach and have had a Charlie Anne, Mary Michael and an Anne Henry. They are all beautiful and very girly girls!

My son is Cody Matthew. My niece is Gracie Danielle. 3 guys wives' at work just had baby girls and they are Alana Nicole (and yes their last name is Smith), one is Sadie Jean and the newest is Lucy Hope.

My childhood next door neighbors named all of their daughters after the month in which they were born. Their names are:

Augustina (for August)
Julydia (for July) - pronounced JEWEL-IDIA
Janulita (for January) - pronounced JAN-YOU-LIDA
Februlina (for February) - pronounced FEB-YOU-LEENA
Crystal Junella (for June) - pronounced JUNE-ELLA

My daughter's name is a bit unusual...Presley Grace. Not too weird or strangely spelled. There just aren't a whole lot of Presleys around.

This is the reason we aren't telling anyone the names we have chosen. EVERYONE has an opinion. But that said, I do think that there are certain names that are just mean.

I'm sorry, but that has got to be one of the worst names I've ever heard!!

I've got one of those commonly known/uncommonly spelled names- Kari, I've never minded it, but I always wanted to see it on a pencil growing up and never did....I'm still a little bitter about that..... ;)

Please don't take offense at this question, but I have always been curious as to why parents name their children something they know going in that the child will have to fight mispronounciation and misspellings thier whole life? I think it is just uncomfortable for the person on both sides. I understand the need to be unique, but it can be carried too far.QUOTE]

No offense taken. DH wanted her name to be of a more traditional Gaelic spelling which would have consited of 15 letters (including letters like g,h,t) as he is such a firm believer that we live in a PC society where we have to spell and pronouce other ethnic names then why can't we name our child a name indicative to our heritage, with or without the correct pronunciation of others. BTW, this was not meant to be a rude comment on his part as he does his best to pronounce other peoples names.

Back to the topic. The spelling that we chose was one that is still traditional but would be easier for people to pronounce and spell. We don't mind if you mispronouce her name as long as you make the attempt. We plan to choose another traditional name for our new addition this fall. BTW, as someone with a common name but not as common spelling I am use to people always misspelling my name.

Yep, I know a girl who named her son Justin Thyme because he was born just 27 seconds before midnight on Dec 31st. She refers to him as her 'little tax deduction'. :confused3

I can understand that. My name is Keri and I always wanted to find a keychain or pencil with my spelling. My parents would special order things every now and then.

I don't like people spelling my name with a C so an spelling witha K works for me. I do have to admit that in school the class roster frequently cut off the top of the names so on quiet a few occassions I was called Kert! I just dealt with it.

My dd has coined herself Mat as a nickname. Now, 3/4 of the way through kindergarten, it's what everyone calls her and she just thinks she's the coolest thing. She's trying to get us to call Charlotte Charlie, but that has a bad association for us and Charlotte calls herself Sasha which came from us calling her Char-Char. Kids are so funny. And, I would have guessed that your dd's name was Lora-lie because I went to school with two girls, same spelling, same pronunciation!
