Interesting childrens names

I have an unusually spelled first name: Karyn
I didn't like it growing up 'cause it was always misspelled and I couldn't get the cool barrettes with my name on them :rotfl: However I do like it now. Although I tease DH that since I married him I have to spell both my first and last names!!!

What prompted me to respond to this thread was my SIL just had a baby boy and she went through every baby name book known (supposedly) to try to figure out a name. SHe settled on a nice name but she misspelled it! By accident. It wasn't like she thought I will be unique and spell it differently. SHe named him Aidin. When she named him, she said, "you know like Aidan Quinn." I said Aidan Quinn is with an A. She realized her "mistake" after she did the birth certfiicate, etc. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND how you could have done months of research, made a big deal about picking the right name, and then not realize the accepted spelling. And she is an older mom to boot so it's not like she's a clueless young girl!!!!!

Being in the *birth* business I get to hear all kinds of names. Recently I've had clients name thier babies -

- Pace - baby boy (pronounced Pach-ay). It means Peace in Italian.
- Haygan - baby boy
- Meara - girl
- Frithjof - prounced Fritch-if. A boy - norweigen name.
- Quain - boy
-Merrick - girl
- Aspen - girl (I really liked this name)
-Maddox

I get stranger boy names than girl names.

My friend is named Aspen :)

My name is Charmaine, and I like it very much, but no one can spell it :confused

I had vowed my kid would have an easily spelled name, but also uncommon. So as you can tell by my DIS name, when I had my daughter she was given Alice. So last year when making reservations for WDW I didn't think anything of spelling my name and not spelling Alice's...When I get the reservation info in the mail, they spelled her name Allis, I mean come on!

As far as unusual names, there is a girl in my daughters class named Keillan, pronounced, Kee-lin, I think it is really pretty. There is also another Alice, I couldn't believe it!

LOLOLOL I would love to hear some of the names you see.

My son is Alverto.. Always get called or changed to Alberto.

wow some of the names i have heard are erm.. interesting? lol

though I like it for someone to have a unique name. for my name is mary, and i always hated it everyone eles had the name also. but again no one can spell or pronuce my last name right :rotfl2: McEvoy. try saying that one :thumbsup2 Mac-a-voy

my great neice name is, Delecia. not even sure i spelled it right :lmao:
cousins names are, Emilia, Wyat, (why-it :rotfl: )

but if i have a baby girl, which i hope to one day. ive have picked the name, Rydia Marie. ive always loved the name rydia since the day i heard it. marie is my mothers middle name.

there is a family in my daughters school Dashaun, Daray, Daqwann, dapaul. Of course the kids all make fun of them with the Duh Duh stuff!!! When I was pregnant I was thinking of all different names and then what they could rhyme with to make sure it wasn't to bad. Plus I didn't want a name every other person had...my brother grew up as Mike T, there was Mike G, Mike R Mike G and Mike F in his class..very confusing for the poor kids!. I also would never have my kid be a junior or even just the same first name as a parent...I don't like the whole Little Paul or Paulie, or Paul Jr thing...I want them to have thei own name, not share one with their parent....I swear I think there must be a dozen Teegan Roses in town...that is the most popular name combo together.

My sister taught a little boy named Orangejello. (Or--an--gel-o )

DD's name is Hunter Lauren. Suits her to a T and I still love her name (she's 12) and surprisingly, she loves it too! I like strong sounding girl's names.

I'm a teacher and have taught in many different environments and I have seen them ALL :rotfl:

On a side note, my fiance and I have a mission to one day find his name on something. A mug, a pencil, hey, he would settle for the barrettes that Pooh's Pixie mentioned ;) His name is not unusual, but I guess it's not very common....Clint. He hates that no one ever understands what he is saying. You should hear when we call for Chinese food :rotfl:

As a teacher, I saw the struggles some kids went through with unusual names, so I named mine simple, straightforward names. I have a David and an Amy. People do alternate spellings for Amy sometimes. We've had Aimee and Ami and Amie. Sigh. Guess you can't win.

I know of a Catee (pronounced like Katie). To me it looks like catty.

I knew a boy named E.Z. Million growing up. And the E.Z. didn't stand for names - that was his name.

One family I used to go to church with was all weather related. They had Misty, Stormy, Dusty, Windy (no, not Wendy but Windy, can you imagine?)

My dad knew a girl name Female (fe-MA-lay). He was a high school adminstrator and they had lots of weird ones. There were also twins at his school that they called the jello twins. One was Orangejello and the other was Limejello or something like that. I can't remember the spelling exactly, but both were variations of flavors of jello pronounced differently. I guess their mama loved jello?

Growing up I had a close friend named EOLINE KILLOUGH. Her name got butchered. Can *you* pronounce it? :teeth:

My cousin and his wife have named their kids unusual names. They are Utah (after Keanu Reeves character in Point Break), Mayson (a little girl-I really like this name) and Daylee Grace (I like Daylee and I like Grace but I am not sure of the combination for a child's name).

My name is Robyn which is not the most common spelling and I hated growing up never being able to find my name on pencils, barettes etc. like some of you.

I went to school with a Stoney, Rocky and Pebbles (I think there may have been more but don't remember them!

I can understand that. My name is Keri and I always wanted to find a keychain or pencil with my spelling. My parents would special order things every now and then.

I don't like people spelling my name with a C so an spelling witha K works for me. I do have to admit that in school the class roster frequently cut off the top of the names so on quiet a few occassions I was called Kert! I just dealt with it.

that's my name, too. the only "personalized" item I could ever find was a bottle of Alpha Keri Lotion. that is NOT a winner when you are 8!

For the most part I really like unusual names..some of my favorites are

Van

Dagney

Berrit

Xoc

Whisper

Deisel

But...my kids have ordinary names. DH wanted names that you would find in nursing homes and preschools. Classics if you would.

We have an Aaron and an Allison.

I always hated my name "Leslie" as a kid. It always sounded like a grown up name. I don't mind now, but it is still not my favorite name.

I always felt that way about my name too, Karen. It's not really a kid name. I was friends with Katies, Allies, Stephanies, Heidis, Kristies, and then Karen. I always felt like a grown up and I hated it.

OB nurse here, and I have heard it all. :sad2:

Glowa (girl)
Grier (girl)
Omega (this child was the only boy after 6 sisters)

In our area naming children a family name is vogue. Which I think is very nice.

So whatcha tryin' to say? ;)

My user name is actually a blend of the first three letter of my boys first names - Hayden and Gannon. They are a not common but defiantely easy to pronounce!

Ok - how do you pronounce that? And where does it come from? That is a new one to me.
