IMPORTANT: Change to Rent/Trade Boards Rules

Agree that this is a good decision for our online community.

Thank you for making the effort to put the community back into this.

extra work required of the moderators, who as you probably know are all volunteers.

Thanks to all the mods for everything you do to keep this site operating- it can be a WONDERFUL resource in so many ways... :thumbsup2

I rented points from here and had a great experience. I spent much time reading about DVC and points rental, but never heard of the "Reservation Wanted" or thought it was different wording for Points rental. How does this work?

I am guessing, somebody has a reservation already made with exact dates, then another person steps in, pays for the points and changes the name on the reservation?

Reservations for sale are just as you said- I have booked a room and can't use it and didn't cancel it soon enough- so I can try and sell the reservation on the board at 30 days or less to the time - providing I have 50 posts and have been a member for 6months on the board.

Any chance now that the new rules are in effect, that the reservations for rent posts could be posted earlier than 30 days out?

Hollybud68 - you can still use the Rent/Trade Board to rent/trade points. You don't need 50 posts to use most features of that board.

The 50 post requirement is only for those who want to offer a confirmed reservation for rent. (They already made a reservation and are looking for a renter).

You don't need 50 posts to offer your points for rent. Usde the R/T Board to help you find a renter and then make the reservation based on the dates the renter desires.

You can also offer to transfer points to another member or ask for a transfer of points from another member without having 50 posts.

And of course, we hope you will continue to post on Ops, Planning & Mouse, too. Congrats on becoming a member! :)

The 30 day rule is to discourage owners from booking confirmed reservations up to 11 months in advance solely on the speculation of renting it out, thus possibly blocking other owners from making a reservation for their own family vacations. We currently do not have any plans to revise this policy.

Understand the reasoning it's just in reality members truely have situations that come up that they need to rent out their reservation. At least extending the timeframe to say 60 days would at least help members reduce the risk of their points going into holding.I had a glimer of hope that maybe these newer rules would help to relax the older rules.

We encourage owners to cancel the reservation at least 31 days out and bank the points, assuming they are within the banking window. We do understand that not every such cancellation will be in the banking window or the reservation may be made with borrowed/banked points, but we have no way to verify that information on a reservation by reservation basis. There are other websites, including Ebay and Craigslist, that would allow earlier postings.

WELL obviously I'm a 2nd Class member of DVC boards, since I prefer to read (hundreds of hours, over 4-5 years, I'm sure !!) and am barred from what might be a very useful benefit of this board until I completed FIFTY and 00/100's (--50.00--) posts. How did you guys decide on that number to be deemed a reputable and deserving member worthy of full benefits?
Pardon me if my philosophy is to NOT post replies which echo what someone else has already (usually) intelligently responded to, or to announce to all I'm so happy to "return home" in xxx days (if others want to, great!) -- if I did that since 1993 for each visit, then I'd "be IN!!" Well, only 48 more posts required. How about reducing the requirement for those like me who believe that NOT doing posts until I have something important, thoughtful, and new is also beneficial to the boards. Thanks for you hard work, nonetheless. 2nd Class BOB

I'm surprised you could be here for 4-5 years and not find anything to say.

Good for you, you haven't had to ever ask a question?

Never wanted to help out some newbie or a twist on your own experience?

Never participate in a poll?

Nobody is saying to live your life on here, simply to participate.

I think these mods that run the place give up plenty of time and if you want the benny of some of their work, participate.
This one is for you Bob.

I'm sorry you feel like a 2nd class citizen. But, the DVC Rent/Trade board is provided as a free service to those wishing to use it. All we ask is that you participate in our forums before using it for your own personal financial gain.

The original concept of the Rent/Trade board, as stated in the first post of this thread, was to provide a place where our DIS Community rent reservations that they could not use, and give them a chance to recoup something from those points rather than losing them or having them stuck in holding status inside the 30 day cancellation window. This change also is of benefit to those wanting to rent your reservation. It creates some board history for you, so they can become more comfortable in making their decision of which owner to choose for their transaction. That seems like a postive thing, no?

We encourage potential renters to check the posting history of the owners, and to be diligent in every other aspect of the transaction for their own protection.

Chuck S, dianeS... and others--I appreciate the intent, but think the "50 posts required" aspect is flawed !! My first post was actually 2 years ago, if you will check, dianes. Yes, Disney_Fix I have indeed had questions-- and by doing diligent reserch I found they had already been asked & answered, so I did not need to clutter the boards with redundant questions. (does this decrease my posts--of course!). If I had 47 posts counting down times to my next DVC trip, how would that in any way certify my reliability for a rental transaction?? Absolutely renters should do "due diligence", but I don't see how that helps in any material way. OK then: "Bob is a nice guy and would never cheat you. I promise."
In short, I feel that a intelligent reader BUT non-prolific poster is "contibuting" to the board, and I certainly expressed my thanks to the moderators. 3 posts down and 47 to go--well, if I don't pick up the pace, I wont be a "1st class member" until I'm 93 !

I think everyone here appreciates it when people do some research first to see if their question has already been answered. It is surprising how many repeat questions we see, even when a similar question is already right there on page 1 of the thread listings! So I thank you for taking the time to review the information that is already posted rather than ask the same questions over again.

Having said that, you can post something other than questions. You can share your knowledge, experience and opinions. One of the reasons we encourage potential renters to review a DVC member's past posts is to get a sense of how well that member understands DVC. If I was looking to rent a reservation I would choose someone who, based on their posts, seemed very knowledgeable, helpful and personable.

Like you, I lurked here for a few months reading hundreds of posts without posting anything. After a while, I wanted to give back in exchange for all the helpful information that others had given me through their posts. The DVC boards can get pretty busy so it helps to have a lot of people who are willing to pitch in and answer questions.

I agree with LisaS....so many reasons to post & give back to the DIS community (advice, news bit or observation in the parks or at a resort, provide a dining or resort review, post TR's and photos, ask a question....goes on.....).

But Bobput, your statement/post makes it seem like the bunch of us are just posting "welcome homes" or redundant comments or whatever. Sure, lots of us do, but I don't think 50 posts is asking too much of DIS'ers.....particularily those that have been on these boards for 4-5 years ? It's a shame, but I just feel like your comments act to almost diminish the wealth of information, experiences, photos and more that I receive from people here on the DIS. I'd also like to think that more than a couple of my posts here on the DIS over the last decade have helped some people in one way or another.

Do you think I have enough posts to qualify?
I'll vouch for ya Diane ! ;)

To the team....I think it's a good move in regards to the 50 post minimum for the rent/trade board. I remember years ago when I first came to the DIS and needed to rent points, the person I rented from wanted me to provide 3 references. As I recall, I thought, what a prudent move on her part.
I just feel having a bit of a "history" on DIS does help to instill a bit more confidence when participating in such transactions. :thumbsup2

Maria

I think this is a great decision. :thumbsup2 Before I owned DVC and rented a couple of times, I wouldn't even consider responding to anyone with less than 100 posts. Not trying to stir up a debate with anyone - that was my own personal rule - something I am entitled to have. ;)
