IMPORTANT: Change to Rent/Trade Boards Rules

Not trying to stir the pot......could the Rent trade board be expanded to accept the constat onslaught of 'how do I rent points.....' posts? It seem to clog up the look and feel of the DVC boards. Not trying to discourage people from asking the questions but it looks like it is asked in one form or another every 5 seconds. Am I a little off base with this one?

There are already rental instructions in the sticky threads on the R/T Board, including links to two good instructional threads Considering renting? and the DVC Point rental Primer. Unfortunately this is a problem on almost every internet discussion board. People just don't want to take the time to read instructions.

I have no idea how this works yet. We have been members of dvc since 2005 and have suddenly found ourselves in a financial crisis and unable to take our vacation. This is the reason I checked out the DIS in the first place. I am not very computer savvy and had no need to try and figure it all out before. It seems though that this rule would prevent us from recouping our money for points that will expire in July just because we haven't been "posting" for 6 months--is that correct? And, if it is is there anything else we can do to not lose this money?

Welcome to the DIS Boards!

You may post a Points for Rent thread, and try to make a reservation for an interested party...or you could post a Points for Transfer Thread to transfer the points to another member (if they aren't banked)...or both, a Points for Rent/Transfer Thread.

You may not offer an EXISTING Reservation for Rent because of this rule.

Thanks so much for clarifying the rule. It makes much more sense to me now. I don't really plan on renting/trading points....I just got them, not looking to get rid of already, just wanted to know just in case I had to (for a cruise of course!)
I can always count on the people of the disboards to help me understand!

I'm a DVC memeber and have been on DIS for over 5 years. I'm looking for someone to make a reservation for me for xxx/x/xx - just that one night.

It sounds like I can't post that request anymore under the new rules. Is that correct?

Yes, that is correct. Instead, you will look for threads offering to rent points. After doing a bit of due diligence, you would then post your request as a reply to one or more of those threads.

Since you are a DVC member, you also have the alternative of posting a thread asking for someone to transfer you the points you need and then you can make the reservation yourself.

Thanks for the help. I have already done a transfer this use year so that's not an option.

As a DVC member for 12 years and a DIS member for over 5 I hate the fact that people who abused the system makes it harder for me to do what I want .

Bruce,

That is basically correct. I can see your submisison in the R/T Board moderation queue. The thread you submitted to the R/T Board will be declined by the board software. You may not start a new thread seeking a rental. You may seek a rental by replying directly to an existing Points for Rent thread. You will receive an automated message in your PM box from the system when the program runs this evening, informing you that it was declined.

I just want to make sure that I'm reading the new rules correct. You have to be a DIS boards member for 6 months AND post 50 messages outside the R/T thread. Is that correct?

My husband and I have been DVC members since 2006 and love our membership but have extra points left this year that we cannot use. We'd like to rent/transfer them to someone but want to make sure that we're doing it correctly.

Do the 50 threads have to be spread out or can they be posted in a short time span? We have 89 points that will expire at the end of September this year and don't want to lose them. Thanks...

If you plan to rent or transfer your points, this new rule does not affect you. You would submit a "Points for Rent" or "Points for Transfer" or "Points for Rent/Transfer" thread to the Rent/Trade board, offering to make a reservation for someone with your points and/or offering to transfer your points to another DVC member.

If you have an existing reservation already made and want to try to find someone to take it off your hands, you would submit a "Reservation for Rent" thread no more than 30 days prior to the check-in date for that reservation and you would need to meet the 6 months/50 posts criteria as well.

The 50 posts must be on boards other than the Rent/Trade board and must be posts that add value to the thread on which they are posted. In other words, posts that appear to be made just to get over the 50-post threshold do not count.

I have been a DVC member 15 years and on dis-board for 2 years. I don"t have 50 posts but I have a sudden change in plans that requires me to attempt to rent a confirmed reservation. I did not become aware of this change until w/in the 30 day window. I feel I am being punished now for not having enough prior posts. I'm likely to get stuck with these pts in a 30 day holding acct. or worse not being able to use at all. I'm not sure thats faif or you're original intent. Craig Derr
