If you boycotted the Dixie Chicks...

You just seem a little hot to me.;) Perhaps you could check out post #2 and #9 on this thread to get a taste of how I actually feel about them.:)

ETA: I can't recall ever posting on a previous DC thread.

Wow, thanks! I *am* hot... oh wait, you mean angry... nope! I probably am just not using enough smilies. :rotfl:

Why is it the people say this but don't believe it applies both ways?

What evidence do you have that people who say they are in favor of free speech don't believe it applies both ways?

Has anyone on this thread said "don't post your opinion" or "you can't say that?" Have the Dixie Chicks phsyically prevented anyone from criticizing them?

That is such an old cliche - well you might be able to say whatever you want but so can I, and I hate what you said.

Okay - so what? Who's stopping you? Say whatever you want. Now we've both used our freedom of speech and complained about each other. You didn't stop me and I didn't stop you.

The Dixie Chicks can complain about the President, and anybody who wants to can complain about the Dixie Chicks.

Seriously - have the Dixie Chicks done anything to prevent people from complaining about them? If they complain about the complainers - again So What.

It's just talk. When Natalie Maines shows up on someone's doorstep with a gag order or a roll of duct tape, then they can credibly claim she doesn't believe it applies both ways.

It's an issue because the "fans" are still going on and on about it in some cases and they are the ones that won't let it go. The Chicks responded to the death threats and criticism and so on with their music and videos and tonight they won some awards for the music. Once again, some "fans" are ranting about their very existence, much less the fact that they won some awards.

I fully expect that the Chicks are done with the politics now. I hope that others are.

Saints preserve us, here we go again.

The Dixie Chicks said they didn't want country music fans buying their albums! So I, for one, granted that request. That does NOT a "protest" make. I still listen to the songs that I'd bought before and think "Goodbye Earl" is one of the best songs ever, but I will give them what asked for...no more of my money.

And if they want to whine about it, fine. They made their bed, they can jolly well sleep (and ***** and moan and cry) in it.

I don't know (or much care) if they'll be able to make a go of it with their new non-country fans who decide what music to like based on the political stance of the singer. But I doubt they'll get back to where they were, much less any further.

Can you provide a link or some other proof to where they said they don't want country fans buying their albums? I think that is false, (not by you,) but I really don't believe that at all. That sounds more like some station that dumped them said they said.

You have no way to know whether Reba said anything to them or not. I would bet that she did indeed speak to them privately and I would guess her words were not too nice.

BTW, you may not want to believe it, but they WERE persecuted by people for having an opinion. Death threats, radio blackouts, CD burnings, anyone? That is not merely a backlash, that is an organized persecution.

I cannot tell you how much I dislike Ann Coulter... should I start a campaign to never let her speak on TV again, to burn every last book she wrote, etc? Mm... I love the smell of burning books in the morning.

That's your right as an American. Except for the death threats, I don't have a problem with how people chose to respond to them. It's just another example of a two-way street. They spoke their mind, and that was how others were able to express themselves in return. Whether either/or went too far (again, excluding the death threats), it's just a matter of opinion and we are all entitled to them.

LMAO! I hope they have cameras rolling when she does! ;)

I think you'd lose that bet. Nobody has ever contended that Reba said word one and Reba herself said in public that she hadn't.

Boo hoo, poor Dixie Chicks said they didn't want fans buying their albums...and then the fans didn't buy their albums. Gee, lots to feel sorry for there.

As for death threats, all famous people get them. Nice? No. Unique to the Dixie Chicks? No. Just not everyone goes around whining about it like they do.

If you were a fan of Ann Coulter's and she said she didn't want you buying her books and you stopped doing so, I wouldn't feel sorry for her, either. Not that I like her in the first place, but I'm making a point. :)

You are right. But I still feel organizing bonfires was way over the top. The radio stations who did that should be ashamed. It smacks of bullying and censorship.

I agree, but you have to take the good with the bad when you're an American.;)

I would love to join this campaign. Can I also suggest burning Ms. Coulter in effigy, and or leaving flaming bags of poop on her doorstep?

Or perhaps throwing pies at her during her next speaking engagement?

Good Lord in Heaven, you really haven't followed the story, have you?

Not only did they say it, they then apologized publicly for it, then they took the apology back. :rotfl: I'm not going to bother searching for it, but if you want to, it is out there. They didn't want country music fans buying their albums, because they didn't want to be in the car CD players with Reba and Toby Keith. Later, they made an announcement about how they were disassociating themselves with country music because it had become "too redneck" for them. The DIXIE CHICKS!

Just because you didn't hear it doesn't make it false. :)

Was that you??:rotfl:

But why does anyon think they are "not taking it"? That's what I don't understand. So they complained about the people complaining. And now you're complaining about them complaining about the fans complaining in the first place.

Let the circle be unbroken indeed.

Yet their album was #1 when it came out. Seems that all their fans did not leave them as you state. lol

Not really. I can speak out against it and state I think it is wrong. Just as those who were offended by their words can speak out against them. I do not have to take anything, lol, esp. if it reeks of censorship, something we have fought long and hard against.:lmao:

Here is part of an article:]

Yet, the blame should not rest solely on the shoulders of radio because the Chicks themselves have made it clear they don't much care. They feel abandoned by radio and say they are not friends of the country radio crowd. But what is disappointing is the need for the Chicks to distance themselves. Martie Maguire went at Reba McEntire and Toby Keith saying the Chicks would be happy with a "small following of really cool people who get it, who will grow with us as we grow and are fans for life, than people that have us in their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith. We don't want those kinds of fans. They limit what you can do."

Maguire could have stopped right after the word "changer" without dissing others. Was it a slip of the tongue? On purpose as a planned comment to generate further press and attention? And in this day and age, why bother needlessly going after someone - okay they had a beef with Keith, but McEntire?

How's that for the fans who put them on the charts and made them millionaires??

Alas, only in my dreams. Although, you do make a good point. The pie thing has been done. What else could we throw at her....

I've got it! Dixie Chicks CDs!

Now *that* would be funny!

As for those who think they are suffering the wrath of angry fans, their last album went Platinum. I just checked.

Yep, they could have been nicer, but really, would you have been nice to the very people who you felt abandoned you and attacked you? Yes, not all fans left them, but really, the majority did and the fans who remained and still remain are not the ones they were speaking about, I am sure. (Though what do I know, I am not a country music fan... fingernails on blackboard, anyone?)
