If you boycotted the Dixie Chicks...

Ditto. I loved their performance tonight at the Grammy's... I would have never been interested in their music before. I learned about athem from the media coverage of their slam against George Bush.

They are Americans who deserve Freedom of Speech...

I like them a lot...

Again, great performance tonight...very moving. And, for the record, I think they got a great response from the audience...

Why is it the people say this but don't believe it applies both ways?

Why is it the people say this but don't believe it applies both ways?

Sure it does... but I must have missed where they were sending death threats to thier fans... ? Sorry, but some people really got a bee in their bloomers and took this way too far. Yes, backlash... don't buy their records... but when death threats and mass protests to burn their CD's occur, that is insanely too far. We are civilized, we should be past the burning of things we disagree with.

Yes, but just as with any group, they shouldn't judge or generalize country music fans by the extremists.

How darethose uppity Chicks to be offended by a few death threats?? What is their problem? :confused3

Yep. Respect is a two-way street.

Absolutely.

Speaking from the music industry perspective - the alienation of their fan base was career suicide. I don't think they will ever fully recover. Their awards tonite was certainly not evidence that they are "back" but that they haven't learned their lesson in humility.

I'm all for Freedom of Speech. I'm just not a fan of Stupidity.

Perhaps it is time for the people who felt insulted to just shrug and move on? What do you want? Should they beg you to like them again? Should they apologize for how they felt? Everyone can have an opinion and perhaps they could have been nicer about it, but I would bet that they privately got a lot of BS from the other country people for daring to be "Anti-American". I can understand why they would say screw it and just seek out a new fan base rather than deal with the BS sent to them by die-hard All-Americans like Toby Keith. (Can I just say that his Proud to be an American song, while meant well, is just too over the top for me?)

To each their own, but perhaps it is time for those fans who have hurt feelings to just move on?

Personally I don't believe they generalized. They couldn't get airplay. They heard lots of negative stuff about them. They got sick of it. They're human. IF they're crowing or even *****ing a little (I didn't see/hear their grammy acceptance remarks) I believe they've earned the right.

While, I completely agree to their freedom of speech, celebrities need to realize that when they insult their fan base, they must pay the consequences.

Some people believe (the Chicks) in unfettered free speech and anything done in response that is equivelent to having their freedom of speech limited. No one is actually stopping them from opening their traps. It's just that some people don't want to hear what they have to say (or sing).

Death threat aside, there can be consequences to whatever comes out of your trap.

They sure did milk their vicitimhood though. Remember the famous line from Tim Robbins, "A chill wind is blowing in this nation...."

Hmmm, maybe I should start boycotting Reba and Toby because I disagreed with their attitudes in all of this? Nope, I won't boycott Reba because I like her and support her right to have a different opinion from mine. (Toby, I don't care for to begin with so it makes no difference in his case.)

Never cared for them either way till they took a stand against the moron from Texas. Now I love em. Thank's, Chicks.

Saints preserve us, here we go again.

The Dixie Chicks said they didn't want country music fans buying their albums! So I, for one, granted that request. That does NOT a "protest" make. I still listen to the songs that I'd bought before and think "Goodbye Earl" is one of the best songs ever, but I will give them what asked for...no more of my money.

And if they want to whine about it, fine. They made their bed, they can jolly well sleep (and ***** and moan and cry) in it.

I don't know (or much care) if they'll be able to make a go of it with their new non-country fans who decide what music to like based on the political stance of the singer. But I doubt they'll get back to where they were, much less any further.

Are you addressing me??:confused3 You would know I could care less what their stance is if you've been following all my posts. They don't have the power to hurt my feelings.;)

Reba took absolutely no stand in anything. She was completely uninvolved until the Dixie Chicks stated that they didn't want country music fans buying their albums because they didn't want to be in CD players with Reba and Toby Keith. :sad2:

Reba had never said anything about the Dixie Chicks until that.

As usualy, the Dixie Chicks went and shot their mouths off about someone and then whined later about how persecuted they were when people didn't like it.

The nasty comment about Reba and not wanting the fans to buy their music sealed it.

Nope, cannot say I have tracked your posts. My comments were to everyone who seem to be upset that they have 'abandoned' their fans. How many threads have there been about how the Dixie Chicks were mean to their fans, etc? And for those wish failure to the Dixie Chicks, sorry, I doubt it will happen. They have and will continue to break into more mainstream music and their fans will grow. :)

Reba surprised me when she responded. I've followed her for years and she was always classy, too classy to resort to insults in fact. In spite of that I'll stick by her and I'll stick by the Chicks. I boycott boycotts.

You just seem a little hot to me.;) Perhaps you could check out post #2 and #9 on this thread to get a taste of how I actually feel about them.:)

ETA: I can't recall ever posting on a previous DC thread.

EXACTLY, if I was offended by negative comments about Dubya, I'd never go see another movie or watch a news broadcast.

Like I said, it was their attitude after they said it. They basically called country music fans morons and said they didn't want nor need them to buy their records.

Fine, it happened. Hope the comment was worth it.

I dont condone death threats, of course!!! There are looney tunes people in every group.

You have no way to know whether Reba said anything to them or not. I would bet that she did indeed speak to them privately and I would guess her words were not too nice.

BTW, you may not want to believe it, but they WERE persecuted by people for having an opinion. Death threats, radio blackouts, CD burnings, anyone? That is not merely a backlash, that is an organized persecution.

I cannot tell you how much I dislike Ann Coulter... should I start a campaign to never let her speak on TV again, to burn every last book she wrote, etc? Mm... I love the smell of burning books in the morning.

Perhaps it is time for the people who felt insulted to just shrug and move on? What do you want? Should they beg you to like them again? Should they apologize for how they felt?
No, but when you tell your fans that you no longer wish for them to buy your albums, you shouldn't go around crying about how your fans stopped buying your albums.

There are lots of people who don't see being All-American as a bad thing. So, die-hard All-American is just fine with them.
(Can I just say that his Proud to be an American song, while meant well, is just too over the top for me?)
The Proud To Be An American song is called "God Bless the USA" and was by Lee Greenwood. Toby sang "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)" and, of course, you can say you didn't care for it.

To each their own, but perhaps it is time for those fans who have hurt feelings to just move on?
The fans did move on. That appears to be the problem. The Dixie Chicks need to get over it. They got what they wanted, so why is it still an issue?
