Now let me first say I am not the tattoo type person (if there is one, LOL) but I never ever considered getting one. My brother gave me a good idea though. Get our mother to write I Love You on a piece of paper and have that tattooed on my inner wrist, about where a watch would be. I finally caught her (she is 81 but on the go constantly) and got her to write it for me in print and cursive. What do you think?

I think that's sweet.

I don't quite get how you never considered a tattoo but your brother is giving you ideas for a tattoo though, heh.

There's some celebrity who has something akin to that... he was on the phone, his young son sitting with him and the kid, doodling, drew his name or initial or whatever on the inside of the guy's wrist and he went and had it tattooed over. Viggo Mortensen! That's who it was. He told the story on a talk show when the host asked about the little tattoo, as he's not tattooed in general I don't think.

I have something similar. My stepfather and my mom got married when I was 3; for all intents and purposes, he is my father. In the ceremony, when they exchanged rings, he gave me a gold necklace with a heart on it as a symbol of becoming a family. 5 years ago I took the necklace into a tattoo place, had them outline it, and got it tattooed on my wrist.

I still absolutely love it and am so glad I did it. I think its a great idea. BUT. I had always wanted a tattoo. So definitely take your time to think about it... Even with new technology its expensive and painful if you ever decided to get it removed. You have her writing sample now; IMO, you gain nothing by being impulsive. So think about it, make sure its really something you want before you get it done!

I had a friend who was hesitant about getting a tattoo so she outlined what she wanted where she wanted it in pen for a few days to kind of test it out. I thought that was a great idea. She ended up getting it and loving it!

On DWTS, I noticed that David Arquette had a unique tattoo. It looked as if he had taken something Coco had written "I Love Mom and Dad" and had it tattooed on his arm in her handwriting. I am not a tattoo person but I thought that was pretty cool. I think it goes along with your idea. To me it seems more meaningful and personal than getting a picture of something you think is "cool" now but in 20 years might regret.

I'd probably get in done in white. In fact, I might do that...

I actually researched this a little and found that some complained that the tattoos faded more when they were done in white. My son told me the chemical they use causes cancer but never heard that. I decided against it when I heard they fade.

My mother was concerned it would hurt, LOL. She called me later and said if I decided to do it she would go with me to hold my hand. She is 81. I am 49.

Another neat tattoo I saw was on the inner side of your foot. It is a bible verse, Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. It was very pretty.

I am not a tattoo person but I have heard the the foot is not a good place as it will fade because of the abrasive nature of the skin rubbing against other things. It would need to be touched up more often to keep looking good.

The foot hurts WAY MORE than the wrist. I have a star on my foot ("for guidance") that I got after my heart on my wrist. If I had gotten the foot first there is no way I would've gone back for the one on my wrist! I almost couldn't let him finish the foot it hurt so bad. The wrist didn't hurt at all. It just felt like someone was drawing on my wrist with a pen that wasn't quite working. Since we did this all the time in high school it was no problem. I was really surprised by the lack of pain lol.

The tattoo on my foot was awful :) and then I went back and had it recolored this summer. I must have forgotten how awful it was the first time, because it didn't get any better. I was planning on adding on something to it, but I couldn't stand it.

OP- make sure your mom doesn't have very fine or thin writing- have her do it in a marker or something "thicker"- if the letters are too fine they have a tendency to run together in time.

My cousin had her grandmother's handwriting tattooed on her ribs- it said "Just Be" and it is beautiful and meaninful.

OP: I like that idea.

I myself don't have any tattoos, but am trying to muster the courage. My DF left me little notes before he passed away-he knew he was dying from cancer-and I want to get a tattoo just like you described as well.

True. My foot tattoo's faded waaaaaay quicker than any of the rest of them.

The foot hurts WAY MORE than the wrist. .

And true again. Big time. :headache:

I wish I had something like that. I think it would be great in hard times..........but way too late. My mother is no longer with us :(
Maybe my kids...........that's an idea. I only have one tattoo and it has both kids' names with it. Something to think about.

I really love her idea, too. Do you have any old cards from her? I do. I could do this.

I'm doing the same thing with my grandmother's handwriting. I was going to get it in september but I found out I was having a baby so it's on hold.

That's an AWESOME idea. Absolutely love it! :lovestruc

I've heard of getting something your child has written/drawn tattooed on you, but never a parent. If I wasn't already semi-committed to a family tribute half sleeve (have my wedding flower & violets for DD -- planning on adding lillies for my nana and another flower for this next LO), I'd definitely consider handwriting from loved ones. Such a lovely idea.
