I got laid off, but HEY I went to Disney!!! Update 10/27

Hey Dianna!!! I just noticed your trip report link in your siggie over on our thread

Had to come by and subscribe:goodvibes

So sorry with all the bad luck you have after each trip and I am very sorry about your job:hug:

Glad you were able to have a good time despite it and get out of the funk:)

Really enjoying your report.:surfweb:

Hey Sharky!!! :goodvibes

Nice to "see" ya. Thanks for hoppin' onboard.

Great start!! Waiting for more!!

Thanks. Hopefully I can keep this thing rolling pretty quickly. ;)

So sorry to hear of all your bad luck. As a matter of fact I can relate to the lay off one...I was laid off 10 days before one of my Disney trips. It was one where I took the kids with a friend, her kids and my sister. I was so sad. But Hubby just said go...the trip is already paid for and you saved your spending money too. Go, have fun! :cool1: I love my hubby! I sent out resumes before the trip so I had to check in with hubby every day and see if I had to schedule any interviews but other than that Disney made me forget my job loss for the time i was there. It was a great trip!

The next trip same people went and the first night we were there my nephew smashed up my sisters brand new car! :scared1: It was very stressful, when you're so far away and you can't see them or touch them to be sure their ok it's not fun. :sad2: But we were assured (after several phone calls) that nephew was ok. (he wasn't when his mother got home! :lmao: )

Glad to hear you got out of your "funk"!

Wow. Sounds like we share the same luck. Hopefully it all worked out?

I think the thing that stresses me most is....I don't know what I want to do. I could probably find another job, but I really like this one. And should I jump ship and get another job now? Or should I wait until this one is done and use my severance/retention to move forward? UGH - Decisions Decisions.

I'm loving your trippie so far!

*jumps on for the ride*

Thank ya - Thank ya - Thank ya. Don't jump too hard. :yay:

I got to read the first 2 chapters and you are certainly off to a great start! You are a wonderful writer and I'm enjoying it! I'll have to finish reading later, as I am at work. :rolleyes1

I like how you shouted out when you crossed the FL border. :goodvibes

Love the trip report. Sorry about your troubles.
Due to massive layoffs in my company (and industry) I just lost my job that I loved. I am still taking my Disney trip in November!

Hopping on board for your TR. I'm loving it.
We're hoping to take our 3 DSs and the new little one in Jan. or Feb. of 2010, if the economy allows. :confused3 So far away....your report is making me excited...lol :woohoo: Can't wait to read more.

Great trippie so far! Sorry about the layoffs. I'm glad the Disney magic got through and you enjoyed your trip!

I agree on the Pop - parking lot view is the best 'cause the last thing you want at the end of the day is to have to drag yourself halfway across the resort to get to your room!

wow I have missed a LOT already!! Sorry I slacked on getting over here. Been busy with a sick doggy and then work today didn't give me a chance to DIS at all :sad2: But you are off to a great start!! I'm glad you got your Wataburger and Flippers!! :thumbsup2 It's all good for the no pics on the Pop. I think most of us know what it looks like anyways :thumbsup2 That stinks that you got put way back away from the parking lot though. I think you got a room right around where we had last year and that is one long HIKE to the parking lot. *sigh* I agree that the parks were more crowded this year than previous septembers. What did you think of the interactive part of SE? We LOVED it! The video is just hilarious!! YOur dinner at Le Cellier looks scrumptious. I really hope to be able to eat there one of these days.

Looking forward to hearing more:thumbsup2

Hey there,

First I want to tell you that I can relate when I get back from our Disney trip November 1st, I have no idea where I will be working of if I will be working. But the trip is already paid for and we have been saving for two years. So the hubby said that we are still going to go and we will leave our trouble at the Disney entrance gate and pick them up on our way out. :thumbsup2

Second, I agree with Whataburger being the best fast food around. I live in Texas and I have a whataburger around the corner from my house so we have it often.

I am really enjoying your trip report.

That is cool you ran into another Diser at Le Cellier and I love that you shouted to her when you realized it, because you were so excited:rotfl2:

"I just got back from 14 days at Disney and found out that when i go in to work tomorrow AM, they will be letting everyone go and closing hte doors"

what a way to come back from vaca!

the fact is i have been quietly looking since April as we have all been seeing the handwriting on the wall. in march they laid off 25% of the office. 1 month ago the had a second round laying off 30% of the remaining office (we are a construction company with field staff running projects, thus they were not touched). While at WDW yesterday, i called my recruiter to find out if i had any news to come home to with regards to job prospects. He told me my timing was uncanny as he just got off the phone with someone from my office who was told of Wednesday's impending doom. Then i received a call from a coworker this evening who knew i was coming back from vaca. They told me their boss, a partner, told them of hte official news. Then i checked my blackberry and saw the email from the Executive Committee announcing the impending doom and that there would be an officewide meeting tomorrow.

Sooo, part of me is glad i went on vaca and fully enjoyed it. Part of me is bumming we spent $7000 over 14 days and now could use that as buffer. oh well, i have been in worse situations and never fell off the planet, something will turn up. The good news is that i ahve been working with a great recruiter and do have a leg up on looking

Well…kind of.

You know that feeling you get before you go on vacation? That walking on sunshine sensation? :goodvibes I had it. BIG TIME! I was telling anyone who would listen that I had “X” days until I was in DISNEY BAYBEE!!! Then I jinxed myself with conversation.:headache:

Now THIS is how you start a GREAT trip report! You totally have me sucked in!

I love the comment you made about not having pics of Pop. That's the way I feel about MANY Disney things - they've been seen before!

Looking forward to more . . .

Hey Cheri! Thanks for the compliments girlfriend.

Love the trip report. Sorry about your troubles.
Due to massive layoffs in my company (and industry) I just lost my job that I loved. I am still taking my Disney trip in November. My DH likes Disney but mostly goes for me...so this time to save money I will be going alone.

Hi there. I am in the same boat. I love my job. I mean, it's frustrating at times, but what job isn't? I'm glad you are still getting to go in November, but sad you have to go by yourself. I wish you the best.

Hopping on board for your TR. I'm loving it.

I am hoping the economy will reset, but it sure does scare me. I have taken a 20% hit on my 401k, and from what I have heard, that's doing good. Some have lost more.

You will have a blast taking your kiddos to WDW! And by the way your post is worded, it sounds like you a pregnant now? If so, congratulations!

I figured you would make it sooner or later. Poor sick baby..is she feeling better now?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed larger crowds. I loved the ending of SE!!!

LeCellier used to be my favorite place to eat...something beat it this trip...but it's still one of the best places to eat at WDW in my opinion.

I am glad you are getting to go, and I'm glad your hubby has such a great attitude about it. I don't think I could have stayed in my glum mood even if I wanted to once the trip kicked into high gear. It is the happiest place on earth afterall. :goodvibes

I LOVE WHATABURGER!!!! Matter of fact, I love it so much I am looking at franchise options right now.

That is cool you ran into another Diser at Le Cellier and I love that you shouted to her when you realized it, because you were so excited:rotfl2:

:rotfl: Yah, After I did it I wanted to apologize, but I figured that would just make me seem more weird. :rotfl:

Holy Disboard Celebrity Batman! :rotfl:

Hey girl! Thanks for the compliment and welcome aboard!

We slept in a little bit on this morning. This can only be accomplished at Disney by using the “privacy please” sign in the key card slot of your door. I think Mousekeeping kind of assumes all Disney crackheads will be up and at the parks by 8:00 am, because that’s when they tend to start banging on doors. Learned that lesson last year. We made sure to ask for our privacy each and every night before going to bed on this trip.

When we woke up, I knew exactly where we were going. Hollywood Studios. I really hate that name. It’s so generic.

Normally, HS isn’t very high up on our to do list on Disney trips. I like the park, but it doesn’t speak to me the way Epcot and Magic Kingdom do. However, they now have the new “must do” attraction. Toy Story Midway Mania. :3dglasses

We headed straight for the hat, stopping only to laugh at the noobs buying tickets at the entrance (which became an almost daily occurance). Towards the end I would shout out random Disney related web addresses to them. The Dis, Enchanted, All Ears, and even Disney World dot com. :rotfl: I got some pretty funny looks, but I didn’t care, it was all in fun and love. We actually saw a couple show up, look at prices, decide it was too expensive, and leave. :scared1: Who does that? :sad2:

We didn’t arrive at the park until almost 10:00, so I was afraid the line would be out of control, but the crowd looked promising.

101_0031.jpg

There was a 40-minute wait posted, but we hopped in line anyway. I really, really, really wanted to ride this ride – and since I waited 40 minutes for a feet filled view of Soarin’ for Mark, I didn’t want to hear any crap about my decision. ;) This turned out to be one of those golden moments where the actual wait was nowhere near the posted wait. I think we waited 15 minutes – tops. There was something about half way through the line that was causing major backup issues. Want to see a picture?

101_0032.jpg

EVERYBODY was stopping to take pictures in front of Mr. Potato head. I guess he’s a star now. :confused3

This ride was soooooo fun. Mark and I are VERY competitive, so this ride is right up our alley. Here are our final scores:

101_0035.jpg

I was player one, Mark was player two. He beat me by almost 10,000 points. That was not acceptable, and I demanded a rematch. We hopped back in the line and had a little longer wait that time, but still manageable. Round two, he won again – but our scores improved. By then, the line was up to 60 minutes posted wait, so we left the area and went to…..

101_0036.jpg

Walked right on. I really like this coaster. It’s so much fun. Mark rode it for the first time last year and liked it too. I really regret not buying that ride picture (last year’s), as it was one of the funniest things I have ever seen. Apparently I had convinced Mark that he was going to die on the ride – so he was holding on for dear life. His arms were crossed in front of his chest, clenching the grips, his eyes were closed, and his lips were pressed together so tight they were white. Now my sole response to his trying to blame the picture on me was…if you thought you were going to die, why the heck would you get on the ride to begin with? :confused3 :rotfl2:

After doing a few more things, we decided it was time for some lunch. We headed over to Pizza Planet. Actually, we stopped at the ABC Commissary and looked there, but couldn’t find anything too appealing. Although I did find this quite amusing:

mcsteamy.jpg

I love me some Grey’s Anatomy. I actually just got hooked during this past year’s off-season. Someone told me that if I liked Private Practice (and I do), that I would love Grey’s. Well – I rented the first season, and the rest is history. How can you not love these two?

derekmeredith.jpg

Pizza Planet is really cute – and another great money making scheme for Disney. Not the restaurant itself necessarily, but the arcade built into the restaurant. Kids were going nuts in this joint, and it was pretty fun to watch.

Mark had a Buzz and I had a Woody. WOW – take that sentence and put it in another context and you’ve got something totally different. :lmao: In Disney terms, that means he had a pepperoni pizza and salad, and I had a cheese pizza and salad.

101_0039.jpg

101_0040.jpg

In addition, we had a chocolate chip cookie, a mickey head rice krispy treat, a large coke and a large bottled water. Now, I didn’t take pictures of our desserts because I figured what could be so special about a cookie, right? Dagnabbit! :headache: This was not an ordinary cookie…it was warm and gooey and ooey and perfect. I was mad at myself for getting the rice krispy treat.

After walking off some of the food, it was time to head back to the resort for a little rest and relaxation.

We were too full of excitement to sneak in a nap, so we changed into our swimsuits and headed towards the pool. In trips past, we have only ever swum in on of the “quiet pools” due to room location. This year with the “prime” room location we scored, we were able to take our first plunge in the Hippi Dippi Pool. There were quite a few kids in the pool swimming, playing, and having the time of their lives, so we found a quiet little spot tucked away in on of the “petals” of the pool.

In that petal, there were two young children – sisters. They were playing quietly (comparatively speaking) with each other, diving under the water with masks and snorkels – smiling and having a good time. Mark and I started talking amongst ourselves and really didn’t pay the girls any mind. :chat: All of a sudden, we see the oldest girl pop out of the water and look at her little sister with this odd expression on her face. You could tell that they shared one of those moments of wordless communication that only sisters can have.

The oldest girl makes her way to the stairs and runs to her mom. I hear her say in a not so quiet tone “MOM THERE’S POOP IN THE POOL!” :scared1: As soon as I heard this, I started looking around….and there it was. A single brown blob sitting at the bottom of the pool about 4 feet away from where we were sitting.  We could not get out of that water fast enough. The mom kept asking the little girl “are you sure? Are you sure? They will close the pool if I tell them its poop. You better be sure.” To be 100% sure, this little girl puts her mask back on, jumps into the pool and goes down for a closer look. Apparently, that did the trick.

Mom makes her way to the nearest lifeguard and tells him what’s going on. He moved quickly to the spot of interest and stood looking at it for a moment. Then began the conference of lifeguards. :scratchin Before we knew it, all three of the assigned lifeguards were standing in the same general area, looking at the blob in question. Now – in my head – three lifeguards pointing at something in the pool is going to sound some alarms, but no one in the pool seemed to notice. Or if they did, they simply didn’t care. Everyone continued to play while the lifeguards put their heads together to figure out the next step.

Well, by the looks of it, the three of them couldn’t get it, so they called in the BIG GUNS. ::cop: Out comes another lifeguard looking woman to inspect the situation. She made the call to pull out the net (aka the pooper scooper) and get whatever it was out of the pool. Once the net had achieved its goal, another meeting of the minds took place. :scratchin There were now four lifeguards staring at the contents of the scooper.

The supreme leader must have given the guards instructions and dismissed them because they started moving around like little worker ants. Two of them started pulling out signs, while the other stood atop his tower, whistle in hand. Mr. Lucky Whistle got to make the announcement. “Ladies and Gentlemen – this pool is now closed for an unexpected cleaning. We are sorry for any inconvenience.” At first, we heard a collective sigh from the pool partiers. Then, as it began to dawn on them we began to hear ewwws and yucks. :crazy2:

By now, Mark and I had been settled in to our deck chairs for a good 10-15 minutes watching this whole spectacle. We couldn’t help but to laugh at some people who chose to get mad about the situation. :headache: I wanted to tell them so badly, “you are swimming in a pool with toddlers who CLEARLY do not have on swim diapers…YOU ARE SURPRISED?” :rolleyes2 I find it best in these situations to suck it up and roll with the punches. ::yes::

It was during this time that Mark and I decided we’d discovered what POP stands for. Pool Of Poop. That entertained us to no end.

Most people cleared the deck area, including our little private investigators and their mom, but Mark and I stayed. I wanted to see how this unexpected cleaning worked. :teacher: First chemicals were tested. Then there was lots of standing around. Around this time the smell of chlorine at the pool became very strong. The chemicals were tested again, and there was more standing around. Finally, Mr. Lucky Whistle was able to announce that the pool was re-opened.

The little kids were so happy :jumping1: – that made me smile. I, however, was not convinced that the pool had been cleaned. I mean I didn’t see anyone with haz mat suits on, no brushes, no nothing. I had to ask one of the guards. I also needed confirmation that Mr. Brown Blob was rightly accused.

Me: “Uhm….was it what we thought it was?”
Him: “What?”
Me: “The What”
Him: “Uhm…we’re not supposed to say, but we recommend swim diapers for all of our young gests under 3”
Me: “Nice”

:headache:

Once the crime was confirmed, I really needed some explanation on how the “unexpected cleaning” that I didn’t see happen worked. Well, apparently, the pool is equipped with some type of dual filter that can completely filter the pool in approximately 20 minutes. They tested the chemicals, and they were never out of balance, so there was never any danger. I guess extra chlorine was added at some point, which would explain the strong smell. I thanked the guard for his explanation and returned to my chair. I can’t say that I was fully satisfied with the cleaning techniques, but I don’t know anything about how pools work. I assume that’s standard operating procedures?

I used my new found, non-pool, time to give my Mamaw a call. She’s bored. I tell her of our adventures so far and make her laugh a few times, and she feels better. I guess it’s better to be bored, than to be swimming in a poopy pool. I take a position that any day in Disney, poopy pool and all, is better than any day at work. ::yes::

After the phone call ended, Mark and I headed to the room for our own unexpected cleanings. After showers, it’s time to head to Epcot for dinner reservations at Coral Reef.

We had early reservations for Coral Reef this afternoon, so heading to Epcot we knew we wouldn’t be doing much in the way of riding. It was just about 3:00, and our ressies were for 4:40.

We hit Spaceship Earth first. We wanted to change our answers during the ending to see what kind of future we would get this time. We laughed and snorked our way through the ending. When we exited the ride, we took time to explore the interactive play center located there. Somehow I missed this whole experience the first time through. :confused3 How can someone miss something this big?:rotfl:

globe.jpg

It’s so cool.

Then we discovered that you could actually send a “postcard” from your future. I loved this idea. I sent one to my best friend and another to Mamaw. On another ride later, I sent one to myself. Now this is an absolutely horrible picture of Mark, but I’m posting it anyway::)

future.jpg

There were all kinds of little inter-active games in this area, but there were too many people waiting to play. We left SE and headed for a ride that was sure to be empty. Figment. Figment is like the Epcot version of the TTA. There’s never a line, and it offers one of Disney’s best attractions…..air-conditioning. :goodvibes If there is a line for Figment, or the TTA, the park is CROWDED.:crowded:

We held hands, skipping, singing, and generally acting goofy as we walked towards our purple friend. We entered the queue and walked towards the load zone, where we came to a screeching halt. What the HECK was this?:scared:

line.jpg

Yes – I had to take a picture because I honestly didn’t think anyone would believe that there was a line at Figment. :rolleyes2 That wasn’t the only line surprise of the trip either. We also ended up seeing lines at Spaceship Earth (always been a walk-on in September), and the TTA.:faint:

After Figment, we messed around for a while and leisurely headed towards The Seas. We entered the queue and made it very quickly to the front. Aren’t continuously loading rides just the best thing? :yay: When we were maybe second or third in line to board, a large group entered from our left through the handicapped entrance. What I saw at that moment gave me such a rush of emotions I didn’t know what to think.

This group included several (about 15) severely handicapped young women, who appeared to be from India, or a country that shares many customs with India. Most were in wheelchairs, but transferred either by choice, or by request. Watching this moment, young women using their hands to walk – dragging limbs – being carried, made me feel sad/happy, ashamed/proud, and blessed all at the same time. Sad for these young women, but they were so happy that emotion didn’t last too long. I was happy to see them happy. Ashamed that I was so bummed about something as simple as losing my job. That’s nothing compared to what these young women (and their caretakers) go through every day. Proud to be in a place that was able to accommodate these young people with such ease. The “clammobiles” were slowed to a snail’s pace as they boarded and exited the ride. The cast members were understandably a little flustered, but helped everyone with a smile. When they were all loaded, they made a call to the exit attendants to let them know the party was coming their way. In the end, I felt blessed. My family is happy and healthy, and who can ask for anything more. Everything else will work itself out.:grouphug:

Because the ride had to be slowed again for this party to disembark, we were held in front of one of the tanks for a while…the one with the starfish. I have ridden this ride at least a dozen times, and I never knew that was the dolphin tank. I saw them this day for the first time. How cool.:)

After we exited, we played around in the exhibits for a while. I watched the dolphins some more, we looked at the manatees, and we found Nemo. Actually, we found a bunch of Nemo’s…in a tank. Finally it was time to make our way to…

101_0043.jpg

I was excited, but anxious, about this meal. We had never eaten here before and I heard really mixed reviews about this place. First impression….this place is neat. I liked the décor, and the big tank kind of speaks for itself.

Soon our waiter came around and took our drink orders, and brought us some bread (and oil/vinegar to dip it in).

101_0046.jpg

The bread was great, and we ended up requesting more before the meal was over.

Now – I would have bet anyone $20 that Mark was going to order the steak. He’s not a big fish eater, so I didn’t expect him to be very adventurous. Me – I was torn between the Mahi-Mahi and the Blackened Catfish. The waiter actually recommended both of those, which I found funny. When we started the “watcha gonna get” battle that usually happens with us at sit down restaurants, Mark absolutely surprised me by selecting the catfish. That made my choice simple, mahi for me.

While we waited for our food I became convinced that my cowlick was sticking up. See – I got my hair cut the week before we left, and it was a little shorter than I usually get it. I have a cowlick on the back right of my head, and it tends to stick out if I don’t do my hair just right. Well – I was on vacation, and didn’t want to spend too much time on my hair, and makeup is an absolute no no. I wore a visor almost every day to keep the sun out of my eyes. I tell you that, to show you this:

101_0044.jpg

Mark actually took a picture of the top of my head to prove it wasn’t sticking up. I can’t tell you why I didn’t just go to the bathroom to check for myself, because I don’t know. I just found the story funny, and wanted to share.:rotfl:

Soon our food came….

Blackened Catfish

catfish.jpg

Mahi-Mahi

mahi.jpg

Let me tell you….the Blackened Catfish won, hands down. That dish is an absolute flavor explosion in your mouth. It was nice and spicy and had these tomato things on top that were just YUM. I don’t even know what to say about the cheese grits that accompanied the fish. They were perfection. It made me want to stab Mark in the eye with my fork and steal his fish. Yep – it was resort to violence good.::yes::

My Mahi-Mahi was good, but simply did not compare. It was a little too sweet for me, I think. I ate the fish, but left the rice and the pineapple.

For dessert we had the Chocolate Wave and the Bailey’s Mouse. I must have disappearing pictures, because I know I took pics of these, but again I can’t find them.

I preferred the Wave, Mark preferred the Mouse. The cherries that topped the Wave were smokin’. Probably enough to get a lightweight drunk.:drinking1

We “paid” our bill, tipped our waiter, and made our way out of the restaurant. We walked around World Showcase for a while, and generally lolly-gagged our way through Epcot.

We stayed until just before Illuminations and decided to call it an evening. I wanted to look at the gift shop at the Pop, and wanted to beat the crowds. We picked up some milk and I grabbed a Mickey decal for my car/truck (I never know what to call it…it’s a CR-V  ).

We called it a night fairly early because the next day was the most anticipated day of the trip. Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party!!!!

When they were all loaded, they made a call to the exit attendants to let them know the party was coming their way. In the end, I felt blessed. My family is happy and healthy, and who can ask for anything more. Everything else will work itself out.:grouphug:

I'm SOOOO enjoying your trip report!

This post brought tears to my eyes. How eloquently put!

I just found your TR and was reading it, we stayed at POP this year also and had the same problem with the pool at least 2-3 times a day. I had to email everyone your question. What does Pop Stand for? :rotfl2: :rotfl2:
