Many other owners have learned the same. There are multiple old threads about how to deal with family or friends who don’t understand how DVC works.

Yes its really hard to explain borrowing points to someone that doesnt own dvc and how its a final transaction that we will lose if we cancel and cant go etc and we actually are paying for these points monthly and a lot of money being invested.

I think my new policy with family/friends will be that if they want the discounted dvc points that we can spare, they will have to pay 7-11 months in advance and if they cancel i will make a good faith effort to rent them out and they will get whatever I can recover. If they dont like it, they can book their own rooms

Yes we had the same issue early on. I said no more. 2 nights AKV killimanjaro club. They cancelled and caused chaos to my points for years because they were borrowed points.

Yep after this happened we had had 2 studios booked for aulani in May and I cancelled their studio and upgraded ours to the one bedroom we wanted.

This is the second time we have been flaked on (not dvc related the first time) and the reason was that the kids were sick. Last time it was the kids were behind in school. So I was just honest and I said we do not feel comfortable with booking this aulani trip this way. We understand that kids get sick and we hope they feel better, but because kids get so sick easily, we do not want to take the fall for that. Booking thru Disney will offer you much more flexibility with the reality that kids do get sick often and have school and other issues that arise.

They hadn't given us any payment yet and we were way too nice accepting Disney gcs when we really prefer cash and letting them pay half a couple months before and half whenever they get the money after. We were pretty much walking right into disaster

Only an owner would understand the insanity of flaking on akv club! They def missed out on a room id love to be able to secure!
