Hurricane Irma VB & HHI?

This is on the Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort website -
With Hurricane Irma approaching the U.S. East Coast, Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort will close on Saturday morning, Sept. 9, at 10 a.m. Please continue to check back for updates.

Just left HHI yesterday We came back to our room on Thursday with a note and 4 bottles of water. The note said that the resort will be closing 10am on Saturday and strongly suggested guest leave as early as possible We left Friday morning. My folks live 3 hours away in NC took us 6 1/2 hours to get home. Hope everyone is safe

A CM there reported that as of this morning, they may have dodged a bullet with Irma. However, as DH said, you really can't be sure until the bullet (or Hurricane in this case) goes by.

Given the new path of the hurricane it looks like VB will be spared the majority of the hit. So given that, I'd like to ask what could have happened had the resort taken a direct hit and gotten completely wiped out? What happens then?

Since Irma is wider than the width of Florida, VB is not out of the storm completely. They will not get the eye wall but they still are expected to get 3 - 5 feet of surge. That means the beach, and maybe the walkway will be affected and maybe more deterioration of the earthen/sand wall. And they will be getting heavy winds like all Florida.

There is storm surge flooding already in Chareston, SC and Miami. The strongest winds in a hurricane are on the northeast quadrant (upper right corner). These winds are blowing onshore from the ocean on the east coast. The winds on the west coast are blowing off shore (out to sea). That being said low lying areas-beaches, barrier islands (like Hilton Head Island) and low lying cities especially with large bays on the east coast are prone to storm surge flooding. This is not from rain. This is from ovcean water being pushed ashore by the wind! There was already definite erosion of beach sand along the east coast of Florida late yesterday. As the storm moves north the winds will change direction and coem from the opposite direction.
A high rise construction crane has collapsed in Miami (they did not have sufficient time to dismantle them). Strong onshore winds will cause wind damage as well as flooding. I believe HHI and VB are both in for a battering. The HHI resort is in a more protected area in Shelter Cove. (If you look at a map of Hilton Head it looks like a hight top sneaker/shoe with the toe pointed south. Where the 'tongue' would be is an inlet which leads to Shelter Cove where the HHI DVC resort is located. They may have more flooding than wind damage. (Which is why the HH building codes required guest areas be built on the 'second floor' and higher not ground level.)
This storm is enormous covering 100 + miles in every direction from the center so no matter where you are in Florida you will get damage from wind, rain and flooding from the ocean. Just for information the Weather Channel meteorologists who are doing the live shots and their crews are wearing helmets and protective gear to protect them from flying debris.
Stay safe to all in the path of Irma. And we ae praying for you.

per Dean:

Pros and Cons of buying a vero beach resort?

...if the section you own in (or entire resort) is not going to be reopened, you cease to be a member and your points are gone. You may get some proceeds from the insurance.

How did VB fare during the storm?
Not sure. They just reopened the bridges over to the island and may only be letting people with confirmed addresses onto the island. If my husband drives by for work reasons, I'll see if he can snap a pic.

Are you and your family OK?
Yes, thank you. No power and the septic was out for a while last night. We have a generator and the Publix stores are starting to open. Husband already called into work. We should be fine. Just hoping for power soon.

Good that you are OK. Hope you get power soon.

Saw a picture showing Shelter Harbor sea walls breached. Hopefully not much damage to the resort on Hilton Head. I think the storm surge was more than people expected, given the location of the eye of the storm.

They had a report on Island Packet this morning, and said that they only saw some debris in the parking lot etc. I don't know how extensively they toured the property, but that sounds like good news.

Own HHI points and have been worried. Saw pics on the FB page.... Island Life HH...of Shelter Cove.

Anyone heard anything about VB? I haven't been able to drive by there. We are still without power and gas supplies are low in Vero.

Recently I received a message from MS canceling my upcoming HH reservation; they said it would reopen the 17th.
