Everybody Wants to be a WISH Cat (or dog, or goose, etc...) - October 2016 WISH Challenge

Beverages: I'm pretty good about getting my water in. I need caffeine in the morning and that will come in the form of coffee or diet coke. I've always been a wine and beer girl. Since starting this journey I find myself drinking beer less and wine more. When I drink beer I tend to retain water for a couple days and really feel it in my clothes. With wine this doesn't seem to happen so its the one I usually choose.

Progress: 0%. I actually dont know. I'm not getting on the scale for a few more days.

Servings: I will go back for seconds. I try to take a small first serving and give myself permission to go back if I truly want more. Meals aren't really my problem though. Its the snacking that gets me.

When you find something you like, are you a one and done type of person or do you need multiple servings? How have your serving sizes and habits changed since you started your weight loss journey?

Yes I can tend to be a seconds person - especially for chocolate! and a second bowl of chips. I used to a lot more automatically have a second dinner helping if I really like it .... but this is changing I don't do it that often anymore. Yesterday I had, had some sneaky biscuits in the afternoon and at dinner time we were having pulled pork soft tacos - except the shop didn't have the mini tortillas so I had to get the bigger ones and then it kind of ended up wrapped a little more like burrito - also meaning extra fillings - so usually I would have 2 mini tortillas - so it could have been easy to think 2 was a serving last night. But I got to the end of my first one - stopped and said to the kids I think I'm full - sat with them while they finished eating and decided I really didn't need a second. In the past I may have pushed through even though I was not hungry anymore. So I am managing some changes but it is my treat foods that need some work.

Hey @Flossbolna - I was thinking today about the month you hosted and about how nice the Biergarten restaurant highlight was. And how nice that Germany pavilion is. So, I've realized that we've not yet crossed Germany off our list and shifted the Candlelight Processional dinner from Coral Reef (repeat) to something new.

Thank you for helping me break out of my comfort zone. I'm excited try the food :)

When you find something you like, are you a one and done type of person or do you need multiple servings? How have your serving sizes and habits changed since you started your weight loss journey?
I definetly have a problem with self control and will go back for multiple servings. I try to take less the first time because I know I'm probably going back for more that way I won't eat so much. I also have a problem with picking after the kids if they leave something I like. Since starting to lose weight I have started making an effort to find out what a serving size is for what I'm eating and sticking to it and throwing away what the kids don't eat so it's not sitting around tempting me.

I watched an interesting documentary last night called Fat to Finishline. It was about a group of 12 people that on average lost 100lbs each with running. They decided to run a Ragner Relay Race that was 200 miles! It went through each person's weight loss story and was so inspirational.

I remembered to weigh myself this morning. I am down .6 pounds. I am at 30%. Better then I thought.

Last night my plan was to have a salad for dinner and then take the kids to get Halloween costumes. Well the plan changed when I got home from work. My husband has been dealing with a lot of stress at work and working a ton of hours. He ended up with a really bad headache so I took the kids to get costumes and dinner just to be out of the house.

Costume shopping with my daughter was torture. She tried on at least 10 or more. I should have known. She does this shopping for clothes too. After about an hour she finally made a decision and we went to dinner. They wanted Wendy's so we went there. I had chicken nuggets and fries. They we all got a frosty. It could have been worse though. I ate really good all day until this point.

Also, accidentally lost a few pounds last week, as I certainly wasn't trying :).

That's always a nice surprise!!!

Woohoo for you! Funny how our brains need time to get the "I'm full" message. I'm totally guilty of this as well!

The dogs are named Napoleon and Lafayette - Both were famous French military leaders.

Some of us treat our diet/lifestyle as strict as a sergeant, while others are less regimented.

Would you say your approach to your goal style is more strict or more laid back? Do you respond to pressure from yourself or do you have to be careful not to crush your own spirit?

Good morning! Progress report is 19% because I only got 3 workouts in last week and I fear that this week is going to be much of the same. I took a much needed mental health day yesterday but unfortunately that did more damage than good when it came to my healthy lifestyle. Fortunately, I'm back at it today and really just concentrating on taking it one day at a time. I know that overall this month isn't going to be a win but that's okay.

This Friday I'll be celebrating my birthday with my BFF and there will be lots of drinks and not great food choices. The Saturday will be Nurse the Hangover day so I'm sure I'll have little motivation to be a human ;). Then next weekend is another birthday celebration with my family and then the weekend after that is happy hour with coworkers for, you guessed it, a joint birthday celebration. Oh and then that Saturday I'll be going to a wedding (solo, scary)

This month is a rough one for me, not gonna lie. Not only is it birthday time but October 6th was my anniversary which was a weird day and then the 27th I have my first court appearance. So really my goal for the month is to stay afloat. And I'd like to at least not gain any weight but that I won't know for a couple more weeks :)

This is an excellent question... part of my problem with sustaining weight loss is that I go thru periods that are strictly regimented, which isn't sustainable so I have a blow out. This is why I am working on changing my focus to the small daily choices, a Kaizen approach if you will, that should result in big changes.

Woke up feeling pretty crappy again this morning, darn it, I really thought I had turned the corner. As it is I'm just trying to keep my head down and not blindside anyone with my tired crabby self. But it's tough because I'm still trying to cover my old job responsibilities, because the job went away but not the work, while trying to break free and delve in to my new responsibilities. I'd really like to just hold it together this week, since I'll be out for two, but it isn't looking like it'll be that way.

Weather was pretty chilly this morning, down in the low 30's, so I got to wear my new puffy coat for the first time. I love it. I never want to take it off. It is so light weight and yet so cozy and comforting.

I got off the bus 10 blocks early last night and walked home for the first time in several weeks. Still didn't quite get to 10,000 steps because I'm not getting in my laps in the office in the morning. I had intended to get out for a quick walk later in the evening, but somehow the sun went down before that happened... will have to work harder at my step today.

Happy Tuesday everyone! This time next week I'll be in WDW, at AK... no puffy coat needed :).

Lafayette! Our favorite fighting Frenchman! If you need me, I'll be off listening to Hamilton for the rest of the day...

My approach is so unregimented it's not even funny. Last year it wasn't - I was very dedicated to tracking and watched every single number so, so closely. I don't know why I haven't been able to make myself do that this year. I'm concerned because I know how hard it will be for me to get active and eat right once it's frigid outside. Sigh.

Happy Tuesday, friends! Just a quick check-in from me because I have a ton of orders to get out today. Sorry for being MIA over the last few days. Saturday I photographed a wedding for a friend of mine, and Sunday DH was off from work so we hit up the grocery store. We both just realized yesterday that our Disney trip is NEXT WEEK so I'm panicking a little, haha. So much to get done! I am so ready to be there, though, it's not even funny.

Trying to go through and hit all the questions I missed sorry!

What's your favorite beverage (alcoholic or otherwise)? Are you a "juicer" type person? Maybe you like smoothies? Have you increased or decreased your intake of certain beverages on your journey to a healthier you?

Favorite beverage is a good ole' diet coke. To be more exact, coke zero. Although I have cut back on them during weight loss, I have not given up on them completely. It's always the one treat that I can go back to and know it's not going to throw off my calories for the day.

When you find something you like, are you a one and done type of person or do you need multiple servings? How have your serving sizes and habits changed since you started your weight loss journey?

Multiple servings. It's too hard to just have a little - so I have more success with not having any than just having a little.

Would you say your approach to your goal style is more strict or more laid back? Do you respond to pressure from yourself or do you have to be careful not to crush your own spirit?

Very strict. I've been working on it over the past few weeks. I've been taking in more calories on the weekends and staying the same on the weekdays and so far, it's been working ok. I usually lose a couple pounds during the week, and gain them back on the weekend. My weight has been steady for the few weeks. Once football is over, I'll probably try again to lose a little, but for right now, I'm happy with the holding pattern. I'm learning to eat "normal" again.

I am not strict. If I was the diets would never work. I just try to do everything in moderation. Try to be good through the week and then give myself a cheat day on the weekend.

I booked it too! But I have been to Germany and there is mini October Fest with German goodies every September/October in Dublin.

I changed my main goal to healthy living instead of weight on the scale. I did have weight in mind and adjusted it few times to make it more sustainable and achievable. Bit of both I guess!

Me and my son are on antibiotics with chest infections. Annoying but what can you do, we tried to fight it for a month. Hope we are ok by the time we are due to travel in just over a week.

I hope you enjoy it!! Did I post a link to my Biergarten reviews on my trip reports? Especially the first one was quite in depth. If you are interested, I can dig up the link... Our second visit there was during Christmas and it is really neat that they play some German Christmas songs during the show. Make sure to stick around long enough to take in the show. I think they are on every hour or so...

Oh! Another one! Hope you will enjoy it, too! Even without Christmas, the little show is really neat.

It seems like lots of places in Europe have some sort of version of Octoberfest and German Christmas markets (different seasons of course) going on.

Hope the antibiotics finally do what they are supposed to do and you will be totally healthy for your trip!

Sending a big hug! This all sounds really a lot to deal with emotionally. But I hope that all the celebrating for your birthday will be a nice distraction!

I hope that being away from your job for quite some time soon will help you to let go of your old responsibilities. If you are not there, others might pick up what you did. Just be strong and don't fall back into your role when you come back.

@Flossbolna... this is exactly what I hope for!

Yesterday QOTD:

I used to be very much a multiple servings person. One of the advantages of cooking just for myself is that I just make what I intend to eat. But if I cook more, I am usually good at sticking to my portion now. However, any type of buffet is real torture for me and I usually fail at my good resolve to not go back again and again. So, my strategy to allow seconds is that the first helping needs to be mainly healthy stuff. So, if I go back, I already had lots of veggies and lean protein. Fortunately years of portion control have made overeating so much more difficult because I just can't stuff myself anymore as I used to.

Today QOTD:

Certainly not strict. That might be the reason for my lousy success of actually getting below 70kg. However, I know that being overly strict with myself will make me unhappy and lead to even worse once I give up... So, I do what fits to my character, admire those who can be strict with themselves for their inner strength, but don't beat myself up about it. While I believe in striving to become a better person, not only a healthier person, I also know that at 45 years I am not going to change my character around and overall I am pretty happy with who I am.
