Do you take back clothes if they fall apart while you are wearing them?

I bought a cute gaucho set from JCPenney a couple of weeks ago. It was orginally 69.99, marked down to 39.99 and 50% off of that. So, I got it for 20 bucks. I was so happy. I wore it today and the doggone pants literally fell apart. A belt loop broke, the seam in the front (they zip on the side), ripped. They are not tight at all so it wasn't like I stretched out the seam or anything. Then, just now I almost peed my pants because the zipper got stuck. I was doing the pee-pee dance because I knew if I peed in the pants, I wouldn't be able to return them.

Thank goodness I kept the receipt!!!!

Depends. About 6 years ago I bought DD a prom gown from the Bon Ton. One strap broke before the prom while we were taking pictures. So after pictures we go back to the house and tack the strap back on. Once she gets to the prom the other strap breaks. Someone has a safety pin so that is how they fix it. You better believe that the gown was returned to the store the next day. I got no hassles and was given a full refund.

Now if it where an article of clothing that I had worn and washed several times, probably not.

Children's Place pants. Worn once by my older daughter (the one whose clothes last forever, not the younger one who wears something once and it has grease stains and tears) They tore right down the seem. Children's Place refused to take it back because it was worn and I have never bough another thing in that store since.

If it was from a quality retailer (like Nordstroms) and I had not bought something heavily discounted I would have no qualms in taking it back. But in your situation I don't know if I would.

I bought a dress at Bloomingdales and one of the detail ribbons ripped at while I was wearing back, they took it back no problem. I didn't even have a receipt.

Normally I wouldn't try to take something back like that. But just a few weeks ago... My son wore a brand new pair of pants from Lands End to school. When he came home, there were three large holes in them. Two in the leg and one in the knee. I thought even for a little boy, that was a little extreme in one day. So, they took them back with no problem. (These were supposed to be the ones with reinforced knees, too).

Yes. I generally save my clothing receipts for about a month, just in case an item falls apart or shrink after a couple of washings. I don't have to return clothes very often, but I want to have the option if they turn out to be poor quality.

:rotfl2: I had to reread your post before I got it! :teeth:

And to answer the question, for me it doesn't depend... I would bring the outfit back. And I have done so.

We have been having major problems with the quality of JC Penney clothes. DD had a winter jacket that the zipper broke on. I bought 3 pairs of pants for my son. The zipper broke on one, and I returned them as defective. Then the zippers on the other two did the same thing! I no longer have the receipts, so i am not sure what to do. I e-mailed penneys, and they wrote back saying I needed to take it up with the store, which I have not done yet. I have decided to no longer buy Penney's brand clothes with zippers, though. My kids are not that hard on their clothes, they must have cheap zippers.

Hecht company used to have nice quality clothing in the Baltimore area. I bought two cotton shirts from them about a year and a half ago. I wore one and washed it, and it came out of the washer all crinkled up. I partially dried it and ironed it damp, then steam ironed it. I could not get the wrinkles out. I was annoyed by the poor quality, so I took both shirts back to the register as instructed for returns. The cashier said since I had worn it I couldn't return it. So I went to customer service, the lady there said the same thing, even when I explained that the quality was inferior and they shouldn't be selling such poor quality garments. I asked to speak to her superior, and got the same reply from her. I asked to speak to her superior, and I was sent to the main office in the store. I stood politely while the receptionist there carried on a personal phone call. Then I explained that my complaint wasn't that the garment didn't fit or that I didn't like the color, it was that I did not feel that the quality was suitable for Hecht Company. I showed her how badly wrinkled the shirt was even after ironing. She remarked that that was the way that cotton shirts were. I showed her the LLBean shirt I had on- 100% cotton, and not ironed, even. She muttered something about treated shirts, but she eventually told me to go back to the original cashier and she would call and give the OK. As the cashier was refunding my money she very rudely told me that they couldn't be refunding money like this all the time or they would go out of business. I was just happy to get my money back, and I don't like being rude anyway, but I wish I'd said "Well then you need to get better quality clothing."

I do the same and have occasionally had to return something I've already worn. Bought a very nice Karen Kane warm up type, 3-piece outfit recently, at Dillards. I wore it once and when I washed and dried it (not in the dryer but over a clothes rack) the pants shrunk to capri length. They offered me a new pair of pants (to go with the matching top and jacket) or a full refund of all three pieces, and I chose the refund.

I would bring the outfit back since you have the receipt. I think clothing should last more than one wearing and at least a few washings. DD 17 buys most of her jeans at American Eagle and two of the pairs ripped on the thigh inner seam....AE took the jeans back, no questions asked....no receipt and gave her another pair..My oldest dd took a sweater back to Old Navy that fell apart after the first washing....took it back no questions asked.

Yes, I'd return the clothes, discounted or not. They shouldn't be discounted because the they know the item will fall apart. Even if the clothes are cheap & trendy to begin with, I think clothing should at least last through one season of wearing.

LOL!

You know the kind of dress pants with an interior button, 2 'slide in" clasps and a zipper?

well, I NEVER button the button cause I always forget about it...and I almost peed my pants one because of it too. heheheh

Even though it's $20...return it. YOu haven't washed the outfit yet...this is the first wearing, it SHOULD stay togehter for one wearing!

I wouldn't shop there again either if this happened! I don't like that store anyway to be honest, so your post reinforces my decision to pass that store when i walk by!

Take it back-also having a problem with Penney's-mainly sizing. Their sizes, both in mens and women's clothing, seem 1 size too small. An XL is actually a large, and so forth.

My wife bought sized 18 pants at Penney's and was well too small, found similar at Sears in a 16 and was nearly too big.

On the other hand-with $10.00 coupons out there-it is worth a try.

I've always had problems with the sizing even from the same manufacturer. I have 3 pairs of the exact same style of jeans, same model number, color, everything. Each one is a different length and a different waist size.

To the OP: I would take the item back. There is no excuse for an item falling apart while you are wearing it. If it helps just "forget" to tell them you wore the item. :rolleyes1

I worked at Penney's for extra Christmas money last year, and they have the most liberal return policy (at least the store I worked at) - I say return them.

I bet you have no problems.
