DIS Book Club, 1st Selection: Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi

How should we nominate books? I know that I just bought The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, and it seems like a good one for discussion, but I have hundreds of books, most of which I think would be good for discussion. Maybe if we choose a time and open it up, and the first five people to suggest books can have their books turned into a poll? I think this might be a good method since we have over thirty people interested at this point, what do you all think?

I will post when the new thread is opening up for a book. Maybe we can have the poll at the top of the new thread, and the book that comes in first will be the first book, and the book in second is the book "on deck." From there we can just do a poll at the top of each new book's thread, but that way we have our starters all set.

For amount of time to spend on a book... That is a tough one. I know I usually finish my books in a few days to a week during the summer and a week and a half to two weeks during school. Other people take longer, others polish off a book every three days no matter when they are reading it. I think that we have to find a compromise. So, maybe we could find an average... How about if people post how long they think would be adequate finishing time for a book of average length. We'll see where it goes from there.

I think the discussion thread should always be open for people to join in and jot down thoughts, but we will only have a discussion when we are all supposed to be finished with the book - on our decided end day for a particular book. That way we can discuss that book and do some looking forward and predicting for our next book. Once again, let me know what you think. I think having too strict a time frame might turn people away, since I know that some days I just pack full of reading and some days I just don't get much of a chance.

So, since I am being maybe kind of wishy washy? (I worked ten hours today, I'm having a tough time being articulate) PLEASE, EVERYBODY, POST YOUR IDEAS!

Thanks for being a part of this (and making me excited because it looks as if we will have a really good time together)!

I think with as large as it could be that maybe someone should pick a book (how about the op) and then give two weeks to read it. After two weeks (longer or shorter. I read a book in a day or two) we could discuss it on a different thread. OR, every other day a new chapter could be discussed. Maybe set it up at the beginning of each book on what day to discuss each chapter, and you can't go past that chapter. Example:

Chapter One: August 2
Chapter Two: August 4

You could set up a beginning thread for each book with the basics like the book, author, chapters and dates to be discussed.

That's my brainstorm.

I think we posted abut the same time. I didn't read this until after I posted my thoughts. I read These Lovely Bones last year, but could still discuss it. I think the one that everyone is talking about, "Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons" sounds interesting.

I know DaVinci Code has been quite the rage.

Maybe we could try discussing chapters. It might depend on the the topic and/or genre.

I could discuss on both Angry Housewives and DaVinci Code. Both were good, although I don't feel that Dan Brown's books leave much room for discussion unless you are trying to study the topics covered more deeply...he writes very thoroughly and ties up all his loose ends.

I think the great thing about having so many people is we will no doubt have lots of variety. Some prefer classics, men's titles, women's titles, mystery, courtroom, drama, fantasy, etc. etc. etc. That's why I originally fell in love with the idea of a book club. What a perfect way to bring a group of people together.

I like the idea of "unlocking" chapters. It makes it so the threads don't get ahead of anybody. So, maybe at the beginning we can make a schedule and there can be reading ahead, but no posting ahead. This will help of clarify our thoughts for a big group chat better, too. That is a great idea!

Once we have this thread tamed down a bit, maybe I could make a list starting with the initial post (me) and going down the line as people joined on. This could be the order in which we select books. Then, if anybody new joins on the bandwagon, we just tack their name onto the end of the list. Does this sound good?

Always needing fresh ideas,

I think this is a fine idea :D Please let me know if you need any help with any organization. I also thought it was a good idea to have an "on-deck" selection. As you mentioned, those of us with smaller libraries might need to reserve the book ahead of time.

Please count me in! Sounds fun!

 Please count me in too. I love to read.::yes::

Can we have some much lighter books mixed with the srrious ones? I know Monster Island from Angel the Series would be fun and I could put in nods for slightly lighter ones(like Princess Diaries with the new movie coming out)

I am game for any kind of book. My life gets really busy during the school year and I was thinking maybe a book a month.

I like the idea of assigning chapters and such. I read quite a bit, sometimes two or three books a week depending on my schedule. If I didn't have guidelines, I would have one finished off in no time and lose interest.

Sounds like I have nothing better to do, but I read sometimes instead of watching tv. I also work out of my home so that gives me extra time to read also.

Alright - Little Miss Mickey - we're at Aug 1, which is a good start date! Assign us a book and I'm ready to go. I'll take a break from the Harry Potter series and go at it before summer break is over. :D
