DIS Book Club, 1st Selection: Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi

Can I add a suggestion? I think it would be a good idea for the next book to be chosen soon. I just looked up the curren book at our library. It is not due back until August 18th. There are two holds on it. So it would be good for getting on a waiting list or purchasing it from wherever to have advance notice.

I think lighter reads are fine, but let's not get into Harlequin Romances and things like that... I think we all understand why?

There are many YA Books out there, I read them all the time, as I am a teacher.

Basically, give us three options, try to have some variety, and we'll see what we end up with! I know there will be all different kinds of fare offered, look at how different our signatures are!

Nicole -

I think I already covered it, otherwise it was jsut a thought in my mind... That happens a lot :)

The next book needs to be chosen by the time of the first unlocking of the current book. Therefore, snoopy has until Friday to select the book that will be started on August 25th. Hopefully that will give us enough time.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience of this first book being harder to come by so quick, but I think it is important for us to get started before people lose interest.

Shoot. Now I have to come up with a different book for my suggestion :( I so love those Harlequins too.

I figured a occasional YA read would be fun and I'm also looking at the book to film angle too.And the next title soon would help for putting the book on hold(especially if it's new)

Please do not take offense to my book club suggestions! I am only taking advice from places that are there "to help you establish your own book club." The web has been very helpful! I just really wanted to start this to get people talking and discussing...

Perhaps we can look to the future and maybe we will break into different "types" of book clubs to fit the different genres?
Examples: classics, romance, mystery, humor, drama, current events and issues, non-fiction, historical fiction, young adult, etc.

Satine - I know what you are onto with the book to film aspect- I love reading books before seeing the movies.

I am just trying to create the book club that I had in my mind with some help from other people. It really gets hard when there are a lot of people interested and you don't know any of them! I feel very badly if I have upset anybody.

Oh, I hope you didn't post that for me, Ashley. I was kidding. As much as I enjoy the occasional Harlequin, I do know that they are not great discussing books. There really is no surprise or shock to any of them. Sorry. I should have added a smiley to let you know I was kidding.

it's no problem, gives me time to find books that will be fun and hopefully good for discussion

Satine - Have you read
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants?

That was the last YA novel that I read and I absolutely loved it!

You should check it out if you havent. I could definitely see it being talked about on here.;)

I have no doubt in my mind that we will all select interesting books. That is hwy we rotate who picks, so we get a whole bunch of selection, right?!

Ashley:wave2:

not yet but I'll keep a eye open for it,I read Princess Diaries after seeing the film and that's where most of my YA reading is from

Boy, the stuff i miss when i got to work for a day. I shall pick up the book within the next couple of days, and should have 55 pages done by the time they're unlocked.

I think all the guidelines for the club are good so far. Don't know how often i'll get to participate in chats. I don't often come online on sundays, and the last time i tried to use chat, my computer wouldn't let me.

Anyhow, I haven't mentioned it b4, but i haven't had much time and I didn't realize this would start so quick. But Ashley, if you need any help with member tracking or anything like that I'll be happy to lend a hand.

Thanks, Maureen!

I don't think I knew that this would start so quick, either!

With 42 people, though, I decided that waiting any longer could be dangerous, and with so many curious minds asking, "So...What's our first book?" I realized that maybe I should have had that picked out already or soemthing? It seems as if it has been more than two days since the brain child first presented itself...

EVERYBODY can feel free to lend a helping hand!

Chats will fall on random days. I like it that way because we will never find a day and time that works for all of us. Having a few chats per book will hopefully allow everybody to participate in at least one chat.

The chat room is different now that it was a few weeks/month ago. Definitely give it another go.

WOW! We have so many posts on this thread! I feel so special to have made the initial post! None that I have ever created has gone beyond...10 posts?

Ashley..

Thanks so much for thinking of this and taking the time to pull everything together. This book club will be just the thing I need to pass the quiet mornings when DD starts school in a few weeks. Please let me know if you need ANY help with anything.

Wow, thanks for all the time you have put into this Ashley. BTW, my first name is Judi.

I tend to be very indecisive, but I suppose I could be the next person, unless of course someone else has some burning choices in their mind. Its funny, one of the books I have on my shelf ready to read is The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, so perhaps that will be my choice? What do we do if someone in the club has already read the book? With 50+ people, that is bound to happen, right?

I'm not really a chat person, I have small kids and work full time and can never commit to a specific time to be on the computer, so I will only be there occasionally at best. But I am very much looking forward to reading our selection -- off to Barnes and Noble at lunchtime today to pick up our new book. :)

I will try to pick up the book today. I have my grandson most of the time, he is 2 and don't know how often I can participate in chats, Sunday eve. we usually have plans but will try to participate in the chats occasionally. )Paulette

I don't normally buy books. I read so many that I would go broke. But I just might go ahead and buy this one. I could always save it and donate it to the new high school that will open up next year.

Judi, I would think if you already read a book, it might be worth re-reading for discussion purposes. But if the book is fresh, I don't see where that would be a problem. I wouldn't mind discussing a book I've already read, but I'd have to have it on hand to make sure I don't put any spoilers into the discussion.

Ashley, great job. I'll go find the book today.

I would love to join. I was on vacation last week, so I missed all the initial discussion. I used to be in a book club here, but people moved, got busy, etc. and I really miss it. The first book choice sounds very interesting. I will try to get in on the chats about each book section, but we are usually getting kids to bed at that time, so I may have to check in a little later!

I don;t mind moving up the list if needed, already have a couple of titles on standby at the library
