We have two different contracts....one we bought direct from DVC at VGF a year and a half ago and one we just bought resale at BCV...so excited!! My UY at VGF is April and my UY at BCV is February (the contract was too good to pass up at the time). We haven't closed yet but I keep reading on other forums how difficult it is having two different UY's... Is this true? Can anyone give me any advice or tips on how to best manage the UY's? Any help would be greatly appreciated...I am starting to freak out a little! Thank you!

First of all, relax. It's really not that hard as everyone makes it out to be. The best way to think about multiple use years is as completely separate contracts. After all, that's how MS will see them.

The confusion comes in when you want to combine them at the 7 month mark.
Remember, that's 7 months from checkin - not from when your use year starts. When you want to do that you still have to view your contracts as separate. You can think of them as separate wells to draw from to fulfill the requirements of your reservation. Each well fills at a different time and different amount (use year and point amount). When you want to reserve something, you simply pull as much as necessary from each well.

Where it may get complicated thinking about things, is in the home reservation window for each contract. When you want to take advantage of this for a given resort for which you own a contract, all you have to do is ignore all other contracts.

It really isn't that difficult to manage two or more contracts with different use years. Yes, MS makes it a pain that you have to log in to two different accounts, but that's a minor pain.

Question is, was the price that was too good to pass up going to cost you?

Both contracts have to be titled exactly the same way or you will have 2 separate logins to the DVC member website.

Your docs from the broker and closing company need to reference your original contract.

Can you manage 2 separate UY's, sure, many do but IMO it's double the work, double the documents, twice the chance that something may go wrong.

We have 2 UY's due to ignorance, 1 contract in our wrong UY and all of our other contracts in our correct UY.

My understanding, and I believe I have it correct:

You have two different resorts. It does not matter that they have different UYs when booking at the 11 month mark. You can only use your VGF points at the VGF at 11 months. Same for Beachclub. So there is really no issue here.

At 7 months:

Say you have 100 points at each. You want to use 200 points to book a bigger room.(100 from each account/contract). This is where you have a solvable issue.

You now have to call MS and have them transfer points from one account to the other, and make the reservation. If they had been in the same UY, and titled exactly the same, etc, you could do this on line since all the points would be in the same account.

Transfers retain their UY and home resort. MS has issues using transferred points sometimes. We transferred once, MS made us lose our reservation and we have never transferred since.

think of yourself as 2 different DVC owners.

one of you needs to bank pts by the end of sept. the other needs to remember to bank by the end of november. if the feb UY guy gets confused because the april UY guy has more time, then you didn't get a good deal.

transferring pts and linking reservations adds hassle. you can't do things that are easy to do under one membership (using 3 years worth of pts for one reservation is much more complicated).

but it's mostly just a matter of being careful to keep track...

exactly right, you lose the 8am online "advantage" (small as it is) because you can't see the transferred pts online as MS has to keep track of them separately.

Thanks for the help everyone! I feel a lot better now. I bought the other UY because at the time it was the most loaded contract with the amount of points we were looking for....

Wouldn't you know after ROFR passed a similar contract with the same UY as my VGF went on sale! Oh well what can you do.

Apparently the separate accounts wouldn't have mattered since the 2 contracts are going to be titled differently for now anyway. At the end of the day I am just happy we are DVC owners! I truly appreciate all the responses...Cheers!

despite hearing the difficulties of a different UY (currently have Aug UY BWV 270p, BCV 60p, & SSR 100p contracts), we decided to put in an offer on one (April UY BWV 150p).

for us, the advantages were:
- we could add our children to this contract (we originally bought in 1999, & hadn't thought to do so). they can be "real" card-carrying DVC members this way, with the capability to book rooms, buy a discounted AP & get DVC "perks, without us being there.
- we (currently:rolleyes:) can get the DDP for a night or 2 by booking those identical-room nights under our "other" membership (there is the possibility of having to move, but we enjoy a little DDP:))
with banking/borrowing & a minimum of 2 trips a year, we will likely never have to transfer, making keeping track online easier.

in our case, the advantages of different UYs actually outweighed the disadvantages :thumbsup2
enjoy!
