Hi- I am thinking about signing up for the Chase Sapphire Reserve which includes a good sign-up bonus and a $300 travel credit. Trying to figure out what of my expenses would be eligible for the credit.

1) DVC rental- not sure about this.. I contacted Davids Vacation Club rentals and the agent said she did not think it would be coded as "lodging." Anyone have experience with this?

2) Dining Plan- I think if you are renting points, you have to do this also through the member. Anyone know what this will be coded as?

3) Tickets- In general, I wasn't sure if tickets counted as a "travel" expense. Anyone know?

Thanks in advance!!!

I know I've seen people state on these forums that they've rented points from places that code as travel. I can't remember exactly where they rented from, through. I've also heard from a few sources that undercovertourist tickets code as a travel agency, so those should also be applicable. I know some people get two cards and then buy a portion of the tickets on each card, erasing a large portion (in some cases all) of their ticket expense. I believe the capital one venture card has a similar perk.

According to others dvc-rental.com codes as travel, but their site says they only accept PayPal, so I'm not sure.

Tickets purchased from Disney will not code as travel unless they are charged to your room and wrapped up in your hotel bill thereby making it a "travel" charge because the hotel will bill as travel. Tickets purchased from undercover tourist have been reported as coding as travel. As always ymmv.

Also when I prepaid for Cinderella’s Royal Table direct from Disney, it did not code as dining or travel.

David’s.
I think I know the answer but let me just ask anyway, the charge goes through immediately when you book right? As opposed to after you complete your stay?

ETA: Did you happen to buy a dining plan through David's and if so, what did that code as?

Because it is a DVC rental, the charge through David's will be immediate. They require 100% of the cost be paid once the rental is booked. When I paid the initial deposit, I used my Chase Sapphire Reserve and it coded as travel, giving me 3x points. When I paid my remaining balance, I paid using my Chase Freedom card, which is currently giving a 5x bonus for payments made using Paypal. So with my remaining balance, I got 5x UR points on it.

When I rented out some of our DVC points, the renters requested a dining plan. I had to submit that request, using the customer's credit card, directly in with Disney. Due to that, it is unlikely to code as travel.

Thank you so much.. this is so helpful. I am in the process of getting divorced and trying to set up my own credit cards and that was my plan to use both the CSR and the Chase Freedom. I probably can only get approved for one this year as I opened several cards last year... was thinking of the CSR first to get the 1.5 bump up when redeeming on the portal, but do you think I should start instead with the Chase Freedom? Its so hard.. so many options, ha! But yes, I plan to do both once I can get approved for both! I plan to still take my kids to Disney every year so that is my main goal with the cc points.

Chase has a 5/24 rule, which means that if you open more than 5 credit cards in the past 24 months, you will be automatically denied for several of their top cards, including Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Freedom. Knowing how many cards you applied for in the past two years is crucial to giving you good advice on what card to apply for. The Freedom card is great for DVC rentals right now because of the 5x at Paypal up to $1500, but we don't know what the categories will be next quarter, so it might not be as good. The sign up bonus for the Freedom is also a lot lower, 15k points, versus the CSR bonus, which is 50k points now. If you are under 5/24, then one option to maximize your bonus points could be to "double dip." This basically means that you apply for both the Chase Sapphire Reserve and the Chase Sapphire Preferred at the same time, which gets around the rule that you can only hold one Sapphire card at a time and can't get the bonus for any Sapphire more than once every 24 months. But this requires you to be able to meet a minimum spend on $9k over 3 months, which is harder for some people. There are ways to make it easier through services like Plastiq and manufactured spending. I don't use these methods personally.

I would recommend heading over to the "I love credit cards" thread. We can help you out with recommendations and helping you set up a plan of attack. We also have a Reddit group where you can get some additional information and use/share referral links with other members of the group.

Thanks! I took my questions over there. :)

I charge everything to the room while I'm at Disney. We never get the dining plan since it's a bad value for our family. As long as everything is charged to the room, it will count as a travel expense.
