Having blissfully sailed over all the posts in this thread I will address the OP.
It is a culture thing. I can't imagine we can or should do anything about it (other than not eat dog meat). Let's leave their local diet up to them (with the idea being that they leave ours alone of course).
I imagine Hindus get quite offended by our mass consumption of cows after all (they do NOT know what they are missing IMO).
We had a Japanese exchange student live with us for a year. While he was here, we took him to a local Crawfish Festival (big down here in the South). He took one look at the thousands of boiled crawfish everyone was eating and absolutely FREAKED OUT (crying vomiting.....yeeks)! Apparently, crawfish are pets in his part of Japan. Not a great moment for Intl. comity but..... he got over it......we think..... or he went home and started a petition.
France- Horse meat. Beware any time you see the sign
boucheries chevalines- these butcher shops specialize in horse flesh. This offends many Americans who view horses as companion & sporting breeds. I believe Bo Derek is big on this cause. Again more petitions.
Cat fur/Dog fur is pretty popular there too.
Disturbing content
Some cultures in Asia do eat dog meat. They actually have some barbaric (my opinion) procedures where they starve dogs for around 5 days and then literally hang dogs by their tail and beat them to death with sticks. The idea being the endorphins coursing through the dog's body causes the meat to tenderize.......Um, actually, reading back through this, I am ok signing a petition against this........ Yuk.
As far as I can tell, this is a very small part of some cultures in Asia (a fringe perhaps) & should not be considered a pillar of their culture or anything. What I mean is, I have never had a client suggest in Asia that we complete a business transaction over dog meat wraps or anything like that.
It does appear that dog meat is considered a "Rural Viagra" of some sort (kinda like the "dried tiger p_nis" soup thing that floated around the net a while back). Hey, maybe they are just Asian Rednecks!

rotfl2: not that there is anything wrong with that......I see you Bubba

).
Last time I was in Hong Kong, I actually saw a magazine about Dog Meat. I couldn't read it obviously but it was fairly graphic/shocking to my Western Mind.
I do try to balance above with how we treat our favored livestock. Problem is, I just like kittens and puppies for their companionship too much......
