Chicken-fried steak

You are honestly the first person (in all of my 40+ years) that I have heard say they like chipped beef! I love it on toast-how about you?

Well here's another one. :thumbsup2

And I can't remember the last time I had chicken fried steak, not to many places around here serve it. I do like it though.

As for the gravy, I cannot for the life of me make a good cream gravy. :sad1: My grandmother, who lives in MO, made some of the best fried chicken and cream gravy but although she taught my sis and I how to make her chicken we can't do it "right". :sad2:

I have heard of Babe's from my parents and from friends at work, but I have never been there. Now I need to go :woohoo:. Would it be a good place for a DIS meet, Janette? It's served kind of family style, isn't it?

Aimee - Burleson is still a good option since my parents live there, but I've actually sold the house to the Seminary (doubled our money :woohoo: ), and DH and I now live in a house we had built in North Richland Hills. We had to shorten his commute to Carrollton. I'd still come get you next time we have a meet, though :rolleyes1 ;). I still work at the same place and go to the same church in Fort Worth.

I've seen chicken fried steak on some menus here in SW PA, but the only place I've ever had it was Bob Evans restaurant. I thought it was good, but way too greasy. Probably not something I'd ever attempt to make myself, although some of these recipes sound so tempting!

I do prefer to make my own sausage gravy, though. Mm mmmmm!

I love chicken fried steak!! I make the biggest mess when cooking it though!! DH will never clean up after I make it. (Usually, whoever cooks, the other cleans)

DH and I work together on making the gravy. Sometimes it turns out well, other times, not so well.

We haven't had it lately, I'll have to put it on the grocery list. I use cube steak for mine.

I also like chipped beef gravy and biscuts. DMIL makes that a lot.

Oh, and I forgot about this! Do any of you ever go to Chili's? I like to get their chicken crispers once in a while. I noticed yesterday that they had chicken fried chicken crispers on the menu. They batter dip the chicken like normal, THEN put a breaded coating on it. :scared1:

Really? I LOVE SOS. (Wal-Mart makes this Italian bread in their bakery. It's REALLY good on that bread toasted!!)

Babe's is served family style. It would be an okay place for a DIS meet, they have a pretty limited menu probably the only downside, need to like southern home cooking. They do have an extra room (The Chicken Coop) at the Carrollton location. We might be able to reserve it ahead.
My DH might even come if we had a meet there; in separate cars though ;) so I could stay and visit.

I used to like SOS when I was a kid but I tried it not long ago and I wouldn't eat it again.

I don't think I will ever put chicken fried steak or white gravy in my mouth again either :scared: Sorry but this Jersey girl is not southern enough for that stuff

Gravy is brown and should always be brown. The only gravy that goes on french fries is brown and should also be accomanied by melted cheese - yummy!

Neither chicken or steak should be fried like that - it's just not right:headache:

I was born and raised here in Texas and every Texas girl has to know how to make Chicken fried steak:rotfl: it's my favorite comfort food. Chicken fried steak homemade mashed potatos (both with cream gravy) and (Ok i know this is really bad) Mac and cheese Mmmmm....soooo good!:thumbsup2 it has to be the worst meal to eat b/c it's soooo good:rotfl:

I grew up in California and had never heard of chicken fried steak until I moved to Colorado. It's not super common on menus here, but there are a good number of places that serve it. It even pops up on my dd's elementary school lunch menu a couple of times a month, and it's one of her favorites. I've never tried it and have no desire to, because I don't like steak. I don't like fried chicken much, either, it's too greasy for me.

As for chipped beef, dh loved it as a kid, but couldn't understand why his mom stopped serving it. MIL thinks it's funny, because she stopped when FIL started making more money and they could afford better cuts of meat. I've never tried it, though, and I don't think dh has had it since he was a kid, either.

I love chicken fried steak with white gravy. There's nothing like it :thumbsup2 San Antonio has a place called Speck's that serves the most delicious chicken fried steak in town. It's sooooooo good. Great, now I'm craving CFS! Along with homemade mashed potatoes ;)

Them's fightin' word, lol! :rotfl:

I've eaten plenty of fries with white gravy -- it doesn't get any better than that. I MIGHT try them with brown sometime, but don't bet on it!

And, you cannot beat a good chicken fried steak. Man, I'm hungry now.

Yeah for you on selling the house! DH works in NRH; nice area! Babes is served family style, very yummy and lots of choices. I still haven't made it to a meet yet, have I? :upsidedow

I am from Texas and I love chicken fried steak!!! My sister makes the best I have had. I now live in Wisconsin and no one around here has ever heard of it. Last week DS stopped in with one of his friends while I was cooking dinner, I made chicken and white gravy, DS's friend had never had white gravy. He loved it, he just kept talking about it!!! He travels with DS a lot (they do BMX bike shows) so next time they are down south he is going to try chicken fried steak. A couple of years ago they went to Canada for a show and they both fell in love with the french fries & gravy.

I'm originally from Calif. but my Grandmother was from Texas so I know all about CFS. YUM!! The one thing I discovered as soon as I moved to Texas last year was KFC's Wed. night "Texas Two-Step" special- Chicken Fried Steak, Mashed Potatoes w/white creamy gravy, cole slaw and a biscuit for ....$1.99!
It is such a filling meal and truly delicious. I love it. I get it almost every week. :dance3:

Of course, don't you know that the worse it is for you the better is tastes! :woohoo:

KFC has that chicken fried steak special on Wednesdays here too. It looks kinda scary though, like a hamburger that has been battered and deep fried. :scared:

I like my CFS with cracker crumbs and pan-fried, with real mashed potatoes and cream gravy.
