August Resort Stay Packing Help

Do I only need open shoes like sandals and flip flops? I was going to bring Brooks running (for walking), but if I won't need them, I can keep that spot in my luggage open for a new lounge fly.

During the summer, I bring teva sandals - breathable but with some support. Do you have something like that? I personally couldn’t get by with flip flops alone, but I’m also prone to plantar fasciitis. I’d just worry about wearing flip flops in the rain…My tevas get wet but they'll dry in maybe 5 min.

I've gone to WDW in August four times and I'm going again this August. It is very, very hot and very, very wet. I actually bring two pairs of sneakers because inevitably I'll get caught in the rain with one pair. I bring flip flops as well to wear around the resort.

Funny story about the first time I went in August. My wife and I live in New England and thought, "well, it will be hot during the day but we should probably bring a sweater or two for when the temperature drops at night." Ha! What a bunch of idiots! Needless to say, the temp drops... from like 98 to 88.

So there are "thunderstorms" in the weather almost every day, is this likely to happen every day? Also if there is a thunderstorm in the weather forecast will we be allowed to swim at the beach in Vero?

Yep - it is odd to be in WDW in August and not get a thunderstorm in the afternoon - it's pretty much a given. This is why we are up early and pack in a ton of park time in the AM, followed by lunch and some time at the pool with late afternoons spent resting or relaxing around the resort.

I haven't been to Vero, but I would imagine that if there is beach access directly from the resort, they would not allow you to swim during a thunderstorm.

And yes - hurricanes are also possible. Though I'll be honest - we have been going to August for years and the only time we've ever experienced a disruptive Hurricane was in October (Hurricane Matthew - that's a story for another post!).

Thank you. How do you think they handle the beach swimming, like if there's no thunderstorm in the morning, would we be allowed to swim, but then if a storm hits have to leave and come back? I'll be really sad if we dont get to go in the water

I wear Keens hiking sandals, made to get wet, dry quickly, and provide good traction on wet surfaces. It's way too hot and humid in August for sneakers even without socks. And I bring at least one if not two extra pairs, to allow time for them to dry completely (they get sweaty!) between wearings.

I don't think they can close the beach, just the pool.

I do have a pair of Teva sandals that I can bring. I walk a lot and change my shoes often. I never wear the same shoes two days in a row or I get foot pain. I have several types of flip flops and I think they will work, too, unless it's slippery. I know I slip around a lot in my Crocs when it's wet.

I'll look into that. I'm not sure if I will be able to get some in time, but they sound useful for other things, too.

Hurricanes are pretty rare, but not impossible, in August. We missed Hurricane Charlie (8/13) in 2004 by one day. So best to keep the weather report on your radar.

My advice would also include wearing light fabrics….and colors. I prefer dark color slacks at home, but they aren’t as comfortable in the Orlando heat. Some of the hotels, restaurants, and indoor attractions can be really cool (cold) for some folks, so bring the lightest cardigan you can find if necessary.

WDW shuts down all watercraft during t-storms and the pools are cleared as well for guests’ safety.

I have not been to Vero, but thunderstorms are usually predicted every day in central Florida in August. Having been to WDW many times in August, most days it WILL thunderstorm but they are of short duration (an hour or less). It's pretty unlikely for it to be an all day event. If you are at the pool or on the beach you will only have to go inside for a bit before the sun comes back out and you can resume your day.

I'm always cautious of the potential for hurricanes in August. I start paying attention to the weather apps and the NOAA website which tracks hurricanes and tropical storms in mid July. However, you won't really know if there is a real threat until 5-7 days out and even then it could easily change direction. The good news is that Disney Resorts are some of the safest places to be during a hurricane!
