Do you remember Woolworth?

Yup, they were one of the stores that were at every shopping mall growing up. And yes, had a few lunches at the lunch counter. Money was tight in the 1960s and 70s and you could get a decent lunch for a low price.

We also had Newberry’s.

every little kid around me growing up knew about newberrry's b/c it was the very prominent sponsor of 'romper room'-we heard it's name at least a dozen times during every episode. I also remember it b/c it was one of only 2 stores in our region that still did christmas window displays.

Sure I remember them. The one closest to home had a lunch counter and sold all manner of items. Including live animals such as goldfish and hamsters. The big store in my area was in San Francisco, where they had a basement. I was into plastic models when I was a teen, and they had an extensive selection there that was better than most hobby shops. The rise of larger discount stores like Walmart and Target basically doomed them.

My neighborhood shopping area had both a Woolworth’s and a McCrory’s. There were two or three Woolworth’s in various parts of downtown, including a big one with two floors plus a basement, which was where the toys and pets were sold. The big one also had a restaurant with booths as well as the lunch counter.

I always liked looking at the fish, parakeets, hamsters and other “livestock” at Woolworth’s. In the 1960s they sold small turtles until their import was banned for salmonella or other toxic reasons.

I had this plastic “pond” for my turtles, complete with an “island” and “palm tree.”

When my mom would go shopping at the department store my dad and I used to go to Woolworth and buying things there was a lot of fun and I wonder if any of you remember visiting Woolworth? I would buy toys there and my mom would buy Christmas decor there too and they even had music and movies there too and Mom would find classic movies with Spencer Tracy and John Wayne there as well. And some Woolworth's even had their own restaurants and they had good food. It's a shame that Woolworth closed in the 90's because they were neat stores and you can't find variety stores like Woolworth today and stores like Woolworth should make a big comeback today
I loved Woolworths. They were downtown in a big city and I would take the bus to shop. I remember eating at the lunch counter. The food was great as was the hot fudge sundaes:)
It's from a time gone past, but I am glad I got to experience it.

Yes, as a kid, we would walk from our 1-8 grade Catholic School to "shop". We were an honest group and no one that I know ever pocketed anything. The little old ladies with the glasses hung from their necks used to follow us around. I was long gone by the mid 1970's. I remember the lunch counter and the squeaky, wood floors.

Yes, I do remember Woolworth's!

When I was a kid, the mall nearest my grandmother's house had one and we'd sometimes have lunch there. 😊

As a young adult, I remember there being one downtown in Quincy (one of the last ones around here, I expect.) - I still have a set of Christmas ornaments I bought there.
