I mean, yes, you're right. But this has *always* been the problem with not having a national plan. With politicizing a pandemic so that wearing masks is seen as a sign of weakness...etc. If we had just dealt with the pandemic, really faced it....things would not be as bad as they are here. They'd still be pretty bad....but not this bad. You can't tackle the economy, mental health, schools, restaurants, hotels...on and on.....without dealing the public health crisis.

Today, another record. 144K cases. And hospitalizations are absolutely skyrocketing. Yesterday 61 K, today 65 K. A huge, huge mess.
Totally agree, This right here is why we are in the mess we are in. The US turned a Public Health crisis into a larger disaster for political reasons and that is unforgiveable. All the death, all the hardship, it is heart breaking and much, much worse than it could have been. I honestly don't understand the selfishness.

Who would you say did it "right"?

Well, while it is exciting news, we're literally a bit over a week since the Pfizer participants got the second injection.....so we've got 90% efficacy, but just one week of immunity. So, we have a long way to go before we know just how effective it is over time. Also, we just don't have the long term side effects data, because....not enough time has passed.

We don't know long-term yet, but it has been more than a week since the Pfizer participants got the second injection. It's been over 2 months since I got mine, and I know others whose schedules were ahead of mine.

I'm terrified of the aftereffects of a vaccine that is rushed into production and distribution. Our history of vaccine trials, even the long term trials show horrifying blind spots to certain effects to some of the population. What is the reality of a rushed trial?

It may seem rushed but it was more like a concentrated effort that took top priority. Some were also built on top of existing research/vaccines so it’s not like they went in totally blind.

Two years ago today I lost my dad. Exactly one year and one month later we lost my brother in law. At the same time my DD moved to Seattle just as the pandemic touched down. These events have made our family a little motley crew now forced to spend life milestones and holidays apart. I’d like to feel safe hopping on a plane to go see my kid. I’d like to drive across town to pick up my stepmother for my kids birthday and Thanksgiving. I want to invite my sister and her kids to come to town and stay a few days to try and help them get through missing their husband/dad over the holidays. So sign me up. I’ll take my chances if it means getting back to a normal life.

Well, it’s not “seem” rushed to be correct. It is rushed by nature. That’s not entirely a bad thing per se. Yes, some of the research have piggybacked off of previous efforts, which helped. But, on the development side, the companies are going to be getting these vaccines out under Emergency Use Authorization due to the emergency situation we have in this country. This licensure only requires 2 months of data rather than ~2 years of data from a Phase 3 trial. In fact, these companies will continue to collect data on study participants for years after the vaccines get EUA approval.

So, it’s very understandable that there are people on both sides of the fence when asked would you want to be the first in line for a new vaccine.
And, if we have multiple companies with vaccines out, won’t some people want to wait for availability of a vaccine that has shown to be most effective among the approved vaccines? All these new vaccines aren’t likely to have the same exact effectiveness or durability. Some will be better than others.

I am in the same boat. My mom is 90, frail, and lives in assisted living. She and many other residents had to quarantine recently because a nurse who administers meds in their apartments tested positive. I want mom, her caregivers, and myself protected. If mom’s doctor agrees, (also my doctor) we will be getting a vaccine at the first opportunity. Different people have different circumstances.

Yep.

No one wants to miss Thanksgiving or Christmas or shopping for either. Let's hope we all don't get COVID from Santa this year.
I'm not worried. Santa is essential and continues to work in spite of the virus. He takes precautions and remains diligent. :santa:

He's a mystical super spreader this year. He might have to arrive later this year or earlier next year to bring hard to find toys and games that are magically unavailable. Why would he arrive late? He might have caught COVID, so he needs a couple of weeks to sort it out. Of course, he'll have his limited number of elves deliver to some homes this year, but they'll be stretched. They're not Santa, of course.

Santa has been preparing ALL year. He's ready to go! :santa:

Here is some interesting infos on vaccine behind the scenes logistics. Pfizer/Biontec will have production in the US, Germany and Belgium. Lufthansa Cargo expanded its pharma logistics in Frankfurt and Chicago. I work for LH and know Cargo has been doing test flights for quality cool checks. The below is from September.. the latest was all in German.

edit: update to the article temps have been adjusted to -90C tests.

Good overview of the Pfizer vaccine.

Good video, thanks. Preliminary data is promising.
Things not yet understood-
effects on asymptomatic (once a total of 94 participants had symptoms they were unblinded),
how long immunity lasts,
and if there is a sterilizing effect (necessary to block spread otherwise it could still spread exponentially).

Animal testing showed wide and diverse immune response. Would be great if held true in humans and could explain what’s driving the potential 90%efficacy.

I’ve read mRNA technology has been used for some time in veterinary vaccines with great success but pharma was reluctant to invest in human trials because consumer balking over anything ‘genetically modified’.

I am literally counting the days until we can get a vaccine. My 14 year old severe asthmatic jokes she will fight someone for a vaccine. We want it in a big way in our house. so if any of yall are higher on the list than we are and don't want it, by all means, bump us up to your spot. All joking aside, This is a game changer. We need this badly. I sincerely hope folks end up getting it.

OMG, thank you for sharing! Maybe I stand a chance.

For a glimpse into the high risk world, I was told I'm not a candidate for early vaccine so things have been scary but every advance in treatment is in the best interest of people like me and get us a step closer to leaving seclusion. My Dr just ran new bloodwork and I would guess it's to justify this treatment (Dr must have known this was coming) because I am nowhere near old enough to get it by age. Now I just need to hope that contact tracing works well enough for me to get a heads up to test before there are symptoms otherwise I might not know early enough for it to help ... and yet, still there is more hope today than yesterday.

To the people who are "terrified" of this vaccine, allow me to offer a quote from vaccine expert Dr. Paul Offit, inventor of the rotavirus vaccine:

"We are terrible at assessing risk. People ask me what's the most dangerous aspect of getting vaccines. The most dangerous aspect is driving to the location to get the vaccine".

Your use of quotes around the word terrified once again tries to diminish people's concern about taking a rushed out vaccine.
What is your issue with people deciding not to get it? Why do you constantly have to try to make them feel like their decision is wrong because you feel differently about getting the vaccine?
You've been called out on this thread countless times and you continue. What is in it for you, are you a major stock holder in these companies or are you just one of those people who thinks they are always right about everything and feel the need to try to shame and guilt people into making the same decisions are you?

I wonder. Did he say this about vaccines that have been around for decades or vaccines that are not only newly released but with only two months worth of studies vs years? I'm guessing it's the former.

I also wonder if you are as adamant about people who would rather drive than fly (since flying is safer than driving).

Honestly I have no problems with people being concerned about the vaccine. I'm concerned about the safety of the vaccine. BUT, since I'm not in one of the high risk groups, it will be a while before I'd be eligible to get it anyway. So that's even more time to see if there are issues.
