CDC Notifies States, Large Cities To Prepare For Vaccine Distribution As Soon As Late October

Yes, that's not news, it's literally the point of all vaccines. The more people who get it, the more the entire community is protected.

But this is very good news. We have 2 vaccines that may be deployed by the end of this year. Enough for roughly 30 million Americans. There's about 20 million healthcare workers who should get it first. Then the most vulnerable among us, etc. It seems like most of us will have access starting around April. I'm sure there will be a lot of bumps in the road as we go along here though. These companies have done what appears to be an amazing job in producing very effective vaccines, but the distribution will involve the government.

The EU (Emergency Use) dispersal will have some government control. but when it is fully available, it will be just a walk into the CVS like the flu shot is now. In fact, I got an email from CVS just last week saying they would have it.

The person wasn't referring to the news of a second vaccine. But referring to the poster who said that it's important to note that "the vaccines can prevent disease in the person receive vaccines as well reduce spread to non vaccinated people due to reduction in shedding virus overall".....isn't news. That's how all vaccines work in protecting a population.

Great question. There was no discussion amongst the leading vaccine candidates but there were some people (30,000) I think who signed a pledge saying they would do it if asked. Would I have done it? Yes- I would have.
One would think it had to be considered, especially given that knowing everything that can be known in as short a time as possible would be so beneficial. I understand it took a good bit of time for the study to hit the 100-case mark and that something like 94 of the cases were among the recipients of the placebo. Wow! :cheer2: I haven’t seen any drill-down into the exact details of the cases but the crude data is very positive.

CVS will have the first two vaccines? Because the storage is very, very different than the influenza vaccine which only needs to be refrigerated. They usually only have a college sized fridge in the pharmacy area for flu vaccines. They must be making a big investment in medical deep freezers, because they'll need those in order to store these. They're not cheap either. And they also need to be given immediately upon thawing. These first two vaccines are much more complicated than the flu vaccine.

More data from Moderna:

90 on the placebo got Covid, 11 became severe.
5 out of 15,000 people on the vaccine got Covid. All 5 cases were minor.

I think they also said that they can complete their 3rd phase by Thanksgiving....needed another 10 days or so. I wonder how quickly the FDA will grant EUA.

Here's the text of the email I got:

As America has struggled through the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been difficult to find a path toward health.

Over the last few days, that path became a little clearer. We are closer to having an authorized vaccine to treat COVID-19.

Still, the question that so many of us have is “How would I get that vaccine?”
CVS Health® has entered into a contract with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We were selected as one of the official COVID-19 Vaccination Program Providers.

The United States government will make a supply of the COVID-19 vaccine available to CVS Health when authorized and available to administer in pharmacies nationwide. We will offer it to the public through our 10,000 locations, following established vaccine prioritization guidelines.

CVS Health is already working to enable administration of the vaccine once it is available for pharmacies nationwide.

We are proud of and thankful for the efforts of our pharmacists, nurse practitioners and pharmacy technicians. They have served many communities across the U.S. and helped conduct nearly 7 million COVID-19 tests. We know they stand ready to do the same thing when COVID-19 vaccinations are available.

We are still in a global pandemic and there are so many questions. Stay informed on our response.

Is it a live vaccine?

Both Moderna’s shots and the Pfizer-BioNTech candidate are so-called mRNA vaccines, a brand-new technology. They aren’t made with the coronavirus itself, meaning there’s no chance anyone could catch it from the shots. Instead, the vaccine contains a piece of genetic code that trains the immune system to recognize the spiked protein on the surface of the virus.

I just noticed that CVS sent me an email "COVID-19 Vaccines to Be Offered by CVS Health When Available to Pharmacies" so I'm thinking a majority of the logistical analysis has already been addressed by companies that already have tried and true strategies. Thank goodness no-one is trying to reinvent the wheel.

Another good and very happy sign, my early 20's kids told me all about the new vaccine info this morning and are thrilled they can get their lives back. I'd like to think it's for noble things but I'm pretty sure they just want to go to parties/bars/BBQ's, drink out of solo cups nonplussed if they grab someone else's cup, rent a beach house and do spring break, tailgate.... they want the fun stuff you get to do when you are 21 & 22.

Haha!!! Those ARE noble things! Those are jobs for millions of people! That's what we critically need now!

Haha, I don't blame them. AT 53, I'll be thrilled when we can visit our parents inside again. Selfishly, my DH and I are thinking that we may actually be able to take that trip to South Africa that was cancelled last May. We were within the 90 day window when the world shut down, so all we could do for the entire land portion of this trip was to push it out as far as they'd allow. And that was August 15th of 2021. It's looking like our bucket list trip may actually happen. We have missed traveling so much.

Then I will slide my expected "donations" for spring into the noble endeavors column ;) They will be able to get out into the world well before me & I've been toying with the idea of surprising them each with refundable places at the beach to share with friends. Getting them to stay put over the holidays will require some leverage.

Same, my DH was traveling so I missed out on my 25th, got flowers on my desk and cried in the car in a parking lot (it was no way to spend a 25th) we were supposed to do a few makeup trips this year but that didn't happen. I was hoping DL & Napa with my 2 now adult kids, Miami/WDW with extended family & another to Savannah - maybe 2021 will work out.

Pent up demand will cause a huge surge in travel and tourism I suspect.

You’re either with getting rid of Covid or you’re with keeping it around to kill for a few more years. If you don’t get vaccinated or don’t get your kids vaccinated or worse if you convince anyone here not to get vaccinated then you’re essentially working to keep Covid in our lives for longer than needed.

I respectfully disagree - no one wants this virus to stick around and keep killing people, it's about safety, safety, SAFETY! To feel safe about the vaccine we are going to have to be educated, and we have to be educated by someone we can trust. What was Fauci's approval rating? Maybe Sanjay Gupta? Ideas??

I swear to God, I just spoke to a client who runs a charter fishing company in Florida. He is losing $13,000 every month. He has zero of his 5 vessels in the water currently. He has laid off half of his staff.

This news today- knowing that he can plan on having an actual busy season sometime next year- will literally keep his company in existence. It's that important.

Awww...you'll get that trip! I shed some tears over our trip as well. We normally travel twice a year at least, and we didn't take any trips because our 2 week trip to South Africa was to be the priciest trip we'd ever taken. So by the time we hopefully take this trip next summer, it'll be almost 2 years since we traveled. And I agree...there will be major pent up demand, especially for baby boomers...etc.

I was able to get the first class airfare back through AMEX, which is good because I'm not sure that South African Airways will still be in business for long. I booked the land portion for our private guided trip through an agent on the ground there. One cool thing is that we've been in touch throughout the pandemic, mostly just talking about conditions here and there. So I feel like I made a pandemic friend on the other side of the world....silver lining.

My post that kicked this all off was from a vaccine expert- literally, a vaccine inventor- who said the most dangerous part of getting a vaccine is driving to the pharmacy to get the vaccine. That is the literal expert opinion here.

Oh I understand that, I was talking in the larger sense.
