Am I crazy? The last time I ran was probably in high school(I'm 26:rotfl2:). I am overweight and want to get into shape. Could I really start training now and be okay? Does anyone have any tips for someone who has no idea what they are doing? Should I register now? Am I going in over my head? Is it even realistic to go from 0 to running a half marathon 7-8 months? I might just be crazy.

Yes, you can definitely do it! You have plenty of time. Pick a plan and get started. :thumbsup2 It is all about the training. I would make it a goal to finish and stay injury free. That was my goal my first race. Just give yourself time to get into it and stay committed and you will be all good. Good luck!!

Another solo runner here! I had a rough training run today. I have been on vacation for a month and I only got to run about 4 times. I decided to try easing back in with a 1:1 run/walk. Good idea right? The bad part was when I decided to run faster, since I was only running for a minute. Long story short it was hard, and the thought crossed my mind that if I can't even run 2 miles, maybe I can't do a half. Yeah. That was not my finest hour. Onward and upward! 10K training starts next week, and I have a 5K on Sunday!

Even the Monday before my first half (wine and dine) I had the worst three mile run during which I said numerous times, "why did I think I could run 13 miles?!" But I learned from that run to learn something from each run. That particular run was: "good thing it was today that stunk and not Saturday." I also read early on in my training on these boards "trust in the training."

I just walked 3/4 of a mile... Baby steps:yay:

Does anyone have a favorite iPhone app to track your runs?

You simply email Disney the event name and your time. Space Coast will post the times and make it official to the USATF database. RD just searches the database and I'm pretty sure it's a automated/computer program that reviews the times b/c my time was rejected 2 years ago. I run Disney under my nickname b/c I don't want my full legal name on my bib. The POT I submitted was under my full name. I would email on 12/1 and then follow up with a phone call to verify they received it.

Thank you! That makes me feel better. This is my first Disney race, so I wasn't sure how it worked. Below is the response I got from Space Coast when I asked them how soon we would get results. Not sure why they referenced the Boston Marathon when I said I wanted it for Disney.

Vicki,

You should be able to send a snapshot of our results that will be online
immediately after the event. We would be able to send an email of the
results but usually this is not necessary. With the Boston Marathon, we
actually send them the results so if you list your time from our results and
include a link to our results for verification, you should be fine.

I can't promise you would get an email on Sunday afternoon/evening after the
race but could do so possibly Monday or Tuesday after race weekend.

Thanks for participating in the Space Coast Half Marathon.

I started with run keeper, it's free. I later upgraded to I run smooth because it would track mileage on my shoes and all of the info transfer over to run keeper. I think I run smooth was around 5.00.

First of all...congrats to all of you who have decided to run this half!
I have to categorize myself with yall in the crazy department...however I have never been so excited about anything in a really long time...

So in addition to my first goal...to finish and get that adorable medal...I am all about characters. My question is about the characters on course...are there photographers with them...photopass?? Just curious...I know I won't be stopping for every one...but I have been read blogs online and some pics are great...others not so much!

Well...can't wait for this half...my first one...hoping to meet some of you all there!!

Oh...and one other question...
for corral starts, does a proof of time race need to be a 10K or longer, correct?
my first long race will be the ToT 10 miler but I am thinking my time won't be enough for a better corral at PHM since Disney run...
And when is the cut off date to send in proof of time for PHM?
Thanks again!

Running too fast at the start can result in a rough run. Good luck on your 5k Sunday! :thumbsup2

I had a discouraging experience last week on my long run and decided to try to turn it into something positive by openly discussing it here. ETA: It's about the challenges of running while not-skinny. Let me know what you think:

http://runthegreatwidesomewhere.blogspot.com/2013/05/the-non-skinny-runner.html

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement!

I love your blog! I shared it on my Facebook page.

For the poster (sorry I lost your original post) asking if she's crazy to think she can do this...I think you have to be just a little bit crazy to be a runner. That's a good thing. If you believe you can do this, you can do this. You're the only one in your way. Heh. Maybe I should take my own advice!

Just wanted to let all the new runners know that I was you at the princess in 2012. That was my first one. In two weeks I will be running my ninth half. Here are the things I have learned: There are people much faster then me and much slower then me. Don't count old folks out, I'm 39 and have been smoked by a ton of 70 year olds. I get the same medal as the chic only wearing panties and a jog bra. People do some serious pornographic warm up stretches before a half marathon, I try not to watch but it's like driving by a damn car wreck, I can't help but stare. I set my goals small for every race, my last race I just tried to beat all the women with bigger butts then me. It made me feel better about my big butt. I've learned how to hold my breath for 55 seconds at mile 10 when I open the port a potty door. I've learned it truly truly does not matter how fast you run. You are doing something that most people don't even think about doing. Be proud of what you are trying to accomplish, and what you WILL accomplish.

The number one thing I've learned: how do you finish a half marathon? One foot in front of the other. Nothing more, nothing less.

Dig deep.

Michele

I am laughing do hard TEARS ARE ROLLING DOWN MY FACE! Thanks for making me smile!

You guys are just awesome ^_^

Real quick, for those of you that have done a Disney marathon before, do you book your vacation (a few days before or after the running) with RunDisney or another way to get the discount for running and staying?
Going to stay a few days before but trying to find the most affordable way
Thanks! :flower3:

Oh my words this thread is jumping! Thought I'd be able to catch up quick before my run.

This is GREAT customer service. RD needs to take some notes!

Hopefully someone with more experience can share about the characters. My last RD event was 2012 (took a break for baby). At that time, there was a Disney CM who would use your camera to take the pictures.

POT is due 12/1 and needs to be a 10k. If you're looking to move forward in corral place, consider a smaller local run.

I get the same medal as the chic only wearing panties and a jog bra.

You had me laughing hysterically this morning!

I book after b/c I like to wear my bling in the park. Plus the parks take a lot of time on your feet.

Hi all!
So I'm a HUGE Disney fan and a new, although passionate, runner. I plan to dress as Rapunzel for the PHM. Has anyone done this before? Do you find any specific part of the costume is cumbersome for running? Also, for Rapunzel, does anyone have suggestions for the hair and the tiara? I want a replica tiara but I only seem to find nice handmade ones for like $200 - and I don't think it's a good idea to wear something that pricey while running for 13.1 miles!Any help and advice is appreciated, and congrats in advance to you other princesses - and princes too!

I do believe that HockeyDan (I think that is his ID) did this last year. Search last year's Princess thread and you may find pictures. He can weigh in on this!

One note: remember that the weather can be cold or hot or perfect. So you might want to keep in mind what to do if it is warm and muggy.

I got mine custom made, I modified an existing one she made and got it closer to my likings. Now, we are good friends with her and I get great deals for costumes, she is doing Ariel for me this upcoming year.

I was going to do the hair, but the wig at WDW was just too small for me so it didn't work, so I went after she got her hair cut. I got a purple head band I think from bondi band at the Expo with a crown gem pattern on it.

The costume I had was a full-length dress, but like Rapunzel, it ended at upper ankles. I had a corset style top, but not true corset, it was not difficult to run in it, but I've ran in costumes many times before, this was the second time with a full length dress.

You can see the picture below.

I am so glad that there is at least one other person besides me that picks out certain people to beat. lol I am always scoping out the crowd to pick someone to pass. And if they pass me after I have passed them, watch out. Game on. lol Oh the fun games I play while running a race.

just when I was convincing myself that I should do the 10k and not the half....I'm thinking about the half after reading the last bunch of posts!!

So, Monday is probably AP day and Tuesday is Disney Visa day? Or should I check for the visa on Monday too? Noon?

eek!!!!
