We are sailing soon and I saw this listed on the Navigator's on Barb and Tony's site(thanks so much for this site as it is of great help). Has anyone tried this and what is it? It says "Try 4 British beers for $8." Any help would be appreciated.

Just to add one more question in with woody (hope it's ok) - are these 4 British beers available at any other time besides the beer tasting, as the beer selection I've seen listed on Barb's wonderful site isn't exactly stellar. ;)

*self proclaimed beer snob & lover of all things malty and hoppy*

*grin*

The4OfUs:I agree! My beer tastes have become more refined(Sam Adams rather than Bud) and while in Scotland in Sept. I fell in love with Deuchers IPA at an old cask ale pub in Glasgow. I would love to find it here in the US in its original form.

Another Beer Snob (even though I've met very few beers I wouldn't drink.):jester:

Ok, I've been at the sampler as a spectator (as I don't like the stuff myself)

They are:-

Strongbow Cider (<i>NOT</i> a beer, ever though they kept saying it was, it's, well, a cider!)
Newcastle Brown Ale
Tetley's
Guiness.

They looked to be in half pint glasses and they are all available to drink at any time in Diversions only :) They are not on tap though - I did hear someone say once that the Guiness was, but in the little talk that is given at the same time he clearly poured a pint of Guiness from a can so I'm not convinced...

Thanks, Penny!

Not a guinness fan myself, personally I dont' believe in beer I have to CHEW to consume... *wink*

I do like Newcastle Brown, and I love the Cider, a nice alternative!

Can't remember if we've had Tetley's before...I usually associate that name with TEA. ;)

Actually, the beer is made by the exact same people as the tea!

It's a bitter, so a darkish brew, closer to the Brown Ale (well, it looks the same anyhow :p ) than the Guiness you'll be relieved to know ;)

Hey The4ofUs!

DH used to make his own beer and knows a lot of the terminology better than I. I do enjoy most beers depending on the season, situation, food, etc. My favorite was drinking an ale with mushy peas in Canada once. I think it was Double Diamond. Probably wasn't the greatest ale ever, but what was neat was that is was served at room temperature and it was great. Very cold day and we decided to eat outside. Brr! But fun!

Is the Beer Tasting a scheduled thing like the wine tasting? Let's get those kids in the club and get over there!

J

We make our own beer too - we USED to do it in the house, but the yeasty smell takes some getting used to...now we go to a "brew place" nearby where they have the equipment and ingredients for us and we put it all together ourselves, and bottle it and so on.

We're really looking forward to things like this beer tasting, meet you there...glad to know I'm not the only beer fan on our cruise! ;)

The beer tasting is a scheduled event but informal - it was held during one of the days at sea at about 3pm I think it was, you just turn up if you are interested and you get the sampler plus there is a little chat about the beer making process. They also gave out a couple of free drinks as prizes for answering questions at the end :)

*wink*

I just checked the Navigator's on inkkognito's site and the 2nd day at sea lists:
2:30 Beer Tasting, Diversions Deck 3

See you there!!!

pirate:You don't say which cruise you are taking, but, if you are doing the eastern, for a truly great "beer tasting" go to the Greenhouse in St Maarten - it's a wonderful coincidence that tuesdays are "2-for-1" night, offering 2 Caribs for a dollar - a bargain for any beer in the caribbean, but a STEAL for Caribs! The Greenhouse is right at the ferry dock closest to the marina stores, and it's a wonderful way to end a day on the island sitting outside drinking a cool one!

Steve, that sounds great! Too bad we are going Western. We are in Key West and Cozumel later so maybe they coincidentally will have some good beer tasting specials on those days! :sunny:

Thanks for your help everyone.

Steve:I am on the Eastern 1 month from today so I will check it out.

Guinness from a can? How barbaric. If it isn't draft, it isn't real guinness :)

I'm a Newcastle man myself. This is definitely something I'll look for in August.

There is also a Greenhouse restaurant and pub right near the water taxi stop in St Thomas- right next to Hard Rock. Good beer and good huuricanes. Had a great trip last week. Free Caribs in the jewelry stores in St. Maarten while you shop. Makes you buy more!

tetleys bitter isnt made by the tea people ( thank god) its a draught beer made in leeds uk.. a couple of types are made in cans the best being tetleys smooth flow which is available in the usa as tetleys old english bitter. best served slightley cooled but not cold,, how do i know ? i pass the brewery every day to go to work and the brewery does a wicked brewery tour:wave2: :wave2:

For those on the Western, we enjoyed the Stingray Dark in Grand Cayman. We had it at the Hard Rock and it was very refreshing after swimming with the Stingrays! I wish the onboard beer tasting featured beers from the ports!

Pappy:I wish you could send me a keg of Deuchers IPA(sp?) from Caledonia Brewery in Edinburgh?:D I drank it at the Bon Accord pub in Glasgow and loved it.

...or maybe an Epcot-inspired beers around the world, with beers from various Epcot pavillions...
