Bank Concerns about Employee

I agree that the bank teller should not have done that. I also don't have much sympathy for her because it appears she has no common sense and is nosy. She should be fired.

But, you never can tell these days about some people. She may be a real whack-a-doodle and may try to seek revenge if she does get fired. I think I'd speak to the bank manager and ask that your name not be used. They can just tell her that they do random checks on the tellers to make sure they aren't abusing their access to information.

It is a breach because she should not be looking up the information. I don't think she was reading a screen in the course of this transaction but had looked up info previously.

OP you should report this. How many of your fellow employees use this bank? You could switch banks but would you feel comfortable knowing others are having to deal with this breach also. If she has looked you up I am sure she has do it before and unless someone speaks up she will continue doing it to others.

A person who is not trustworthy should not be working at a bank.

Yep, ITA. Workplaces like banks and hospitals take confidentiality seriously. When you go for orientation, they stress the importance of it. If I were to look up a neighbors chart while they are hospitalized, and I had no reason to be doing so, I would be fired. We are union too, but that wouldn't help me.

Again, if this teller loses her job, she brought this on herself. Maybe she can find a job at the Hobby Lobby.;)

I can't imagine which credit union that is, but I love mine. 24/7 access around the world, online banking, free billpay, retirement accounts, debit cards, credit cards, free ATM access through any other CU ATM, you name it. I don't even have to leave the house to deposit checks - I simply scan them while connected to the online banking module and PRESTO. There isn't a branch within 100 miles of my home base but I never pay teller fees as I can use ATMs in network (and around the corner) for free.

Do you work for a credit union??? I HATE them, because they make it so very difficult to conduct business. NO debit cards. I can only us THEIR ATM, or come in to make a withdrawl, and most in our area have ONE location, sometimes 2. They are a complete inconvinence and waste of time, for little to no benefit! My first bank account was with a credit union, and as soon as I was on my own I switched. Mom and Dad did in on purpose so that I would really have to work to get to any money in that account. I don't think I could run a household from it.

Wow, I cannot believe that someone would be not only snooping in your transaction history, but dumb enough to comment! I did not even realize that tellers had so much access to transaction information. That makes me a bit uncomfortable period. I don't want some stranger pulling up my banking information without my direct permission. :scared1:

But, it's only a breech if you tell someone other than the client. I'm by no means defending her. She is guilty of poor judgement, and having a big mouth but I'm not sure if anything else? I think you are being a little extreme....JMO.

If she had no reason to access the account, it could still be considered a breach.

I agree, in a hospital if you were to access someones records for no reason it would be considered a breech of confidentially for the client...I see no difference with a bank

A teller has no reason to access account history. A loan officer can't even do it without the account holder's permission. It's no one's business. I'm just amazed that she thought it was okay to say anything. She obviously thinks there's nothing wrong with what she did, but it crosses so many boundaries. No one can access your credit without your signature/approval so this is just beyond the norm and she has to know this. I wouldn't feel bad about reporting her. More than likely she has looked at other's accounts and that is so wrong and as others have said, probably illegal.

Lots of places take confidentiality seriously. Where I work, I have access to ssn's, dates of birth and a lot of other info about people that I agree when I get the database accounts to only use for official reasons. I can be fired. I agree every time I log onto my computer to consent to monitoring also. This just amazes me.

I do agree, with some of the opinions here. It's just a bad situation all around.

But, I am here to tell you.....this happens ALL THE TIME!!! If you think bank employees don't know the in's and out's of your financial information, you are kidding yourself. If they tell you, they have never looked anyone up at work, they are lying through their teeth. Period. I am sure I'll get a little flaming from a bank employee or two......but have they done it? Sure they have. If they claim they haven't checked on at least one or two people in their career.....not buyin' it!

Most people, are just smart enough to shut up about it.

True or not - they don't have to be talking about it to get caught at any institution with a slightly sophisticated computer system. That is how others have been fired that you might have seen in the news - credit card company employees, Census Bureau employees, etc. - caught looking up information on famous people usually - their addresses and other PII (personally identifiable information). Security departments do review access records to see what people are looking at - both based on complaints and randomly.

When I did work related to the Census Bureau, even information that is publicly available in the phone book is considered PII and had to be strictly controlled once it hit the computer system of the Government, even though it was already public information.

If she's snooping in your account, she's doing it to other people, too. You'd be doing the bank a favor if you tell the manager what's going on. You could be saving them from a massive lawsuit down the road!

As a matter of ethics, if she's willing to do this, what else would she do? My son had someone at Air Academy Bank change the spelling of his name on his account, attach a debit card to it (a minor's savings account???) and overdraw his account by over $900. The bank was unwilling to cooperate with the police...how interesting is that...but did reimburse us for the money lost. I'd guess that the person who hacked my son's account probably isn't a lifetime criminal...just someone who had access to information they shouldn't have!

I have a story about that, too! I have medical issues that cause me to have to jump through a lot of hoops to get and stay pregnant. My RE was attached to one hospital, my ob another. They both had private offices, separate from the hospitals.

I had no idea that when I went into labor with my younger son every employee at the hospital would be given my complete medical history! It shouldn't happen, but it did! He was a few hours old when a nurse from another wing of the hospital stopped in to say that she had the same medical issues and was just beginning treatments and wondered what advice I had for her!

That freaked me out...but, to top it off, the teenager who delivered my lunch that day wanted to talk about it, too. Really? The dietary deliver staff had a right to my entire medical records?

I have moved twice since then and won't let my current docs see copies of my medical history. They think I'm a space cadet who can't get it together to order copies. In reality, I figure it's the only way to protect my privacy!!!

This is OT but I had just had to tell you guys this because it has burned me for years. My SIL (who I can't stand) was working in medical billing. At Thanksgiving dinner about 5 years ago she asks in front of everyone, "What were you at the hospital getting x-rays of your a$$ for?" Seriously, she did.

I had been outside horsing around with DH putting up the Christmas lights the week before and had jumped on his back, piggy back style, he didn't know I was going to do it, I surprised him and he dropped me on my bottom, after a few hours in agony I was afraid I had cracked my tailbone and off to the ER we went. I didn't break anything, just had a sore bottom for a week. SIL saw the bills for the visit knew what it was for and had the gall to do this to me. I do not have a close relationship with any of my IL family and was so embarassed.

She didn't even work directly for the hospital I went to but some outside company, you never know who's looking at your private stuff.

FYI, I didn't like her before this, still don't like her after and no, I didn't do anything about it, she has three kids to support and if I had gotten her fired than my MIL would have just ended up supporting them all.

WOW! This thread makes me want to lock myself in the basement and not come out.

OT - We once had a problem with our CU. We had three accounts with our CU...our joint account, one in my name only and our business account. DH decides he is going to open another account in his name only too. He goes in and sets everything up. A month later, the first statement arrives. It has my dh's name on it and another woman is listed as a joint account holder. Imagine my reaction.....

Just kidding!!! I knew it had to be an error, but decided to have a little fun with dh. I call him and ask him who this woman is and he has no idea. So I ask him why she is a joint account holder on his new account. Boy, was he mad! He called the cu immediately and demanded to know what was going on.

They did some digging and found that this woman had applied for an account just after dh and the two apps were mistakenly clipped together. Whomever entered both names on dh's account when it was all put into the system. Fortunately, the woman never even knew what happened and never had access to his account.

On the plus side....the cu bent over backwards to try and make up for their horrible error. Something like this could have caused some serious marital problems. I now have a personal banker who takes care of any issue I may ever have and she is fabulous. We also enjoyed the free dinner courtesy of the cu.

However, I still like to give dh a little ribbing every now and then and ask him about his bank girlfriend!:lmao:

You have been given a lot of great information. I can tell you that as a former bank teller it is very wrong that she discussed your account like that. If you did not initiate the conversation it should never had been brought up. I am glad the bank is handling it on their end.

And as a former home daycare provider, please let your director at the daycare know about the situation. You do not need to give her name, but let the director know that a situation occurred and you turned it over to the bank. You are worried that she may be upset and retaliate on you or the daycare. The director can then decide if she wants to pass on this information ahead of time to her licensing agent or just be aware of it. I had a disgruntled family report me to licensing after I let them go - there claim was I allowed the children to be bitten by mosquitoes! I had already let my licensing agent know about the problems I was having with this family so she was aware when the complaint came in.

Our computers do the same thing- they can go back and see everything you've looked at. It makes note of who's logged into a chart. Actually, I think most workplaces watch their employees, even if they don't let it be known.

i work at a bank, and admit i read the first and last page of this thread. that being said, what the teller did was TOTALLY inappropriate! i have access to my account and many others because i help customers.. we all have the same access in the branch. whether it's mine, my sisters, brothers, best friends.. i would NEVER EVER mention any transaction on their accounts. first because i don't have time to be nosy and second it's NONE of my business. when i first started at the bank i remember looking to see if a friend banked there and what i found out was wierd.. where they shopped and deposits. never looked again. good luck!!
