Argo why wrongly bash the Brits yet again

I just spent a week in Canada, watching all the news stories about how "Ben Affleck better thank Canada if he wins" and talking about all the inconsistencies in the film. I think what the detractors of the film - Canadian, UK, American, Iranian, whoever - need to do is take a step back and realize that Ben Affleck didn't make a documentary. His film was made to entertain, and it was "based on true events" ... it was not a re-enactment of the situation.

There are a lot of moments in the film that were added for dramatic effect (airline chase, anyone?), and a lot of moments in the film that were condensed to make it possible to tell the story in a reasonable amount of time.

If someone from Canada or UK or wherever wants to now go out and make a documentary about what happened, I think they should. The book and the full story are, after all, out there.

:earsboy:

It's funny you say that because I heard Donald Trump(I know, I know) saying he didn't like Daniel Day Lewis playing Lincoln because of that.

I hadn't thought about it before, but we had an actor from England playing Abraham Lincoln. I still want to see it.:goodvibes

We must REALLY hate Daniel Day Lewis! We saddled him with a THIRD Academy Award for Best Actor. No other male actor has ever won that many awards in that category before. Poor Brit! :sad2: ;)

We also gave Helen Mirren an Oscar for her portrayal of the British Monarch!

Donald forgets that Meryl Streep played the Iron Lady. :rolleyes2 (The eye roll is for Donald, btw)

Hmmm...I live here and didn't see any of that in the news. There were stories about it when it first came out (especially before they changed the wording of the afterward), but nothing in the lead up to the Oscars. It was mentioned yesterday that he did thank Canada, but I never heard/read anyone saying that it would be bad if he didn't. Not saying you didn't, but it wasn't all over the news, as implied.

Other than some characters (Rose's family, for example) being British and being portrayed in a poor light, I don't see how Titanic slagged the Brits at all. And the "bad" British characters weren't made to represent their country - they just happened to be be British.

Don't forget Judi Drench. She got one for playing Queen Elizabeth for a movie she was only in for 8ish minutes.

Wait! Canada is one of the (British) Commonwealth of Nations! So Hollywood supposedly bashed the British but gave kudos to Canada, one of it's Commonwealth of Nations??? :confused3

Hugh Jackman & Jackie Seaver, both Austrailian, another Commonwealth Nation, were both nominated this year. And Nicole Kidman (another Aussie,) was nominated for the SAG Awards.

So is that rule against Brits, just about Brits? Or does it extend to the (British) Commonwealth of Nations, too? Because Hollywood really screwed up there. :crazy2:

We love Canada. We love England. We love a good story. Sometimes our loves conflict. :confused3

I thought that the Titanic was built in Ireland?

And I personally do not like the way some British actors play Americans . . . why do we all sound really brash and Southern?

The Captain was British and The White Star Line was a British company.

(I was just joking in my last post)

Not totally correct.......yes British Master and crew..........yes White Star was a long time British Maritime company, but when the Titanic sank............they were owned by JP Morgan, the banker and American.

JP wasn't driving the ship when it hit the iceberg though ;)

Did Argo win best documentary?

People are always getting upset about the way they or their loved ones are portrayed in movies. Its not like things and people are always portrayed accurately unless they are British. Even the granddaughter of Lefty Guns had issues with the way he was portrayed in Donnie Brasco.

Well the story is...the Cameroon movie and the 1954 *A Night to Remember * by Lord, are the closest to total truth.

The 2 other movies and the TV movie are often way off the mark.

AKK

Parts of it were true, just like parts of Argo were true. The main story line was fiction.

So if all Americans supposedly try to "paint the Brits" in a bad light," why is BBC America so popular? Many of our most popular shows are recreations of BBC programs.
