Anyone avoiding Gay Days at Disney?

Calliemom I am not offended by your comment. How would I know if where I am staying is a sponsored hotel? I didn't even know Gay Days existed until one of my gay friends from Orlando called me and said, oh no, your trip is during Gay Days. She said she wouldn't even take her own kids and that I might want to reconsider. So, if a gay person tells me that avoiding the parks is a good idea, then I would expect the crowd to be a bit uncomfortable to me and my family. It is also my understanding that they "warn" you at the gates that Gay Days is taking place. Now that's pretty bad to me.

You might check this site http://www.gaydays.com/calendar/ , simply have a look at the sponsored hotels and parks that the groups will be attending and make your itinerary around this. Hope this helps!

Sweetapril,

This is an EXTREMELY hot button topic here on the DIS. It appears you are new but if you do a simple search you will find dozens of other threads on this topic, most of which have been locked by moderators because they have deteriorated into name-calling or personal debates.

You have asked your question, and you have received plenty of answers. Now it's your choice.

I wouldnt worry either. And know what, if your kids see same sex kissing  , you deal with it. Its a part of life, its the real world. Its not seeing the act thats important but rather your reaction and how your family responds to it.
Have a great trip!

This has remained civil thus far. Bravo.

However, it has strayed far from the topic of how to HANDLE the parks when you're there during Gay Days. Please don't debate it.

Okay, my bad obviously some people have been offended by my comments and that has gotten me an infraction. I only responded to comments made toward me and I'm sorry if my opinions offended any of you. Maybe I was offended too! Didn't know this was such a cry baby forum. Subject well received. See you all at Disney.

Not directed at any individual posters, but sincerely I have a tip that has worked great for me over my past several visits and that is to mind my own dang business. Truly, while in the World I am blind to the actions of others, unless they impact me directly (as in physically, not to my psyche).

Amen to that!

To each his/her own but I do have a problem with someone trying to make a statement whether it is a straight couple or a gay couple. I don't feel a couple needs to draw attention to themselves by becoming entagled with each other or by trying to lick the back of each others tonsils. If I want to see that then I can go and watch a.......well we will leave it at that. Just my opinion.

I personally, am not ready to discuss homosexuality to my children....and dont think WDW is the time or place to have this discussion w/ them! (if PDA was an issue)
Although I have no problem w/ homosexuality...and hope my children wont either....it is just not a topic I am ready to discuss with them...kwim???

An infraction??? For what?

This world is becoming so disgustingly pc I don't have the words.

This board is full of hothouse flowers, I just mentioned to my husband two days ago that it doesn't take much for people here to get "offended", soooo annoying.

Bottom line, there is a wealth of wonderful information here, and everyone should be able to enjoy Disneyworld if they are able. I love Disneyworld, and think everyone else will too!

Have you ever thought that what's happening now is just the flip side of the coin? Maybe after all the centuries of oppression, hatred and violence, those who have been victims of discrimination finally feel that they have a voice, and that they have the right to not be vilified for their genes. Sensitivity is not a bad thing, and it seems to be those who don't care about it are the same people who hold opinions that are hurtful or prejudiced, and somehow feel maligned because no one will tolerate them. Maybe if some of you who seem to feel that you can't say anything for risk of offending someone should take a look at what you're saying. Chances are, you are, possibly unconsciously, saying things that are reactionary in order to get a rise out of those you don't like, or who hold differing opinions than you. I think that anyone who posts a comment like the woman who made a broad, sweeping statement about her opinion on homosexuality should not be surprised when she provokes ire, as I'm sure she meant to. We're not easily offended, we're sick of the comments that have been so long veiled in tacit tolerance of bigotry.

I see your point, snusnu - and giving an opinion about homosexuality like the one referenced is asking for a flame war IMO. But I didn't notice anything the OP said that warranted an infraction. As a mother of young kids myself I'm not interested in having to explain excessive PDA's of any sort and would want to know what to expect.

As for the rest of my post, I have noticed that any time a critical post is made, however mildly - someone is quick to call it "harsh" or the like. Not just about hot button stuff like this thread, but anything really.

I would like to see information freely exchanged without all the drama, that would be nice. I love Disney and love perusing this board even though we aren't going back for a year.....

I don't understand what the big deal is about PDAs. I never left home without my PDA - it carried my life in it. Then I got a blackberry.

(Note to self. Do not pack my red Disney Vacation Club online t-shirt for this trip :lmao: )

I have to say that the image your post generated in my head made me laugh. I can just see the posts now:

OP: "I hate Space Mountain!"
Reply: "Anyone who hates SM is a doody head!"

You are right about that. Disney gets everyone so defensive. We're so protective of our little company!

In answer to the OP's question, my family and I have been at WDW during Gay Days three times during the past few years and will be there again this year--the beginning of June just works with our schedule. I have never seen any inappropriate PDA or behavior (I don't consider handholding inappropriate, but I haven't even seen much of that) and my kids have never noticed anything. My DW and I have chatted with the red-shirted folks in the restaurants and ride lines and we've met lots of nice people.

The only inconvenience is that the park selected for Gay Days can be more crowded on its specific day. That's it. Otherwise, for our family, it's a non-issue.
