Any news on Castaway Cay? Please post here if you hear anything

the eye of the storm is just southwest of CC currently - sustained winds are at 110 mph currently

Based on the Dreams OCT 7 voyage being cancelled, I predict that DCL will get people back to the island as soon as possible and will use the Dream to get any addition people/materials to the island to get it back up and running. Could be wrong though.

Yep. This is a hard HARD hit. Castaway is going to get obliterated. Pressure is dropping. Matthew is strengthening. Cat 4 winds + storm surge = not much left to fix.

Nowhere have I seen info on Key West and their projected (by now, real) situation. We drove down there several years ago and those keys are raw to the world...yikes! Jimmy Buffett, head for cover!!

That's because Key West is well outside of the area of concern. They are not expected to see any significant wind or rain from the storm unless they are hit by the potential second pass.

Wow Debbie Downer. When can we expect the zombies to come ashore?
Have you lived with hurricanes? Castaway is on the bad side. Right now an island very very near it is sustaining 125 mph winds. Castaway is probably under water as we speak. This isn't being pessimistic. This is understanding reality. I've lived my entire life along the gulf coast.

To illustrate, in 2008 Hurricane Ike came ashore south of where our house is in Port Arthur, Texas. We were on the bad side of the storm. This was a picture taken at a levee & flood gate about 3 miles from my house:

Ikefloodgate.jpg

That flood gate is like 9' tall and is located miles inland.

Ike came in a strong category 2. The surge was much higher than the usual in that category at a massive 22'. Plus waves. Matthew is a category 4. A nearby island is showing sustained winds stronger than Ike. Pressure is lower. It's a stronger storm and not losing its strength. The size overall of the storm is pretty big so it's likely to push a lot of water. The surge will be very bad. This is what is happening.

Well, a portion of the island is probably under water. Storm surge could be 15 feet or more. A lot depends on the tide schedule as well. I'm sure there are parts of CC that are well above 15 ft. elevation. Undoubtedly, there will be a ton of damage though. It'll probably take weeks (or months) to re-open to cruise guests.

I wish they'd give more info on surge. I'm sure the tower on the bicycle path will be poking up. LOL! I don't know the island's elevations. I'm sure they top out under 20' with the tower as an exception. The structures are mostly pretty simple construction (for good reason). The biggest issue is basic functions such as damage to the water treatment plant, etc.

Castaway Cay is approx 121 KM SE of Freeport, according to Google

I'll be following. Scheduled to cruise on October 17. Not expecting to visit CC.
We're on Dream on the 14th, and I anticipate they will stop at CC. (Cruise ships are great vehicles for lugging supplies/materials to the island.) I don't, however, expect to see a lot of trees left on the island.

Believe me I would love to be wrong, but I've not even gotten into castaway cay on a sunny windy day, so have missed docking into CC twice now. Figured my luck is not good.....just preparing for the disappointment now.
