Any news on Castaway Cay? Please post here if you hear anything

Hopefully CC only got hit with a glancing blow. Looking at the current radar and CC is sitting around most of the outer bands as mainly tropical storm strength. The main eye wall is staying well west of CC. The big concern I think will be the effects of the storm surge which was still expected to be 10-15ft.

Is there typically a delay with the storm surge? The reason I ask is because I have been seeing pictures and footage from Nassau all day and I don't see any evidence of flooding, certainly not anything close to 10-15 feet.

good question. There are some pics on twitter but nothing major. I keep seeing the same KFC sign that blew over so I'm guessin that, so far, that is the worse damage...

I am probably completely wrong on this but I was always told that storm surge comes from a combination of winds pushing water, and a sloping shoreline getting in the way and slowing it down. You may not be seeing a surge in Nassau because there's no slope to the shore to slow down the water. I imagine the breakers are huge, however

Does anyone know about the island nearby where they ferry the day employees from? I keep thinking of the lady we rented our bicycles from who said she lived on a nearby island and rode the ferry to work everyday. I have been so worried about those people.

There was another post -- probably on the big hurricane thread -- where someone posted that there is still a very small skeleton crew on the island, and they had tweeted the cat was in the storm shelter with them. :cat: I can't imagine riding out this storm in a storm shelter on that island!

I am so confused-what cat is everyone talking about?
Does Castaway have resident cats like Disneyland?

Also-I read that the crew was evacuated. That appears to not be true now?
Praying for them all-kitty included!

I am also on the 17th Dream. From what I'm seeing on the Weather Channel, it sounds like our problem will be all the damage on land. Will the roads be clear, airport open, electricity back on, terminal operational, port clear, suppliers able to obtain and deliver supplies? There are so many things that will affect the cruise before it even leaves.

If we are able to cruise, The Bahamas probably won't be ready for us.

I'm no expert, but from the explanation I saw yesterday here, the storm surge tends to happen to left/west of the eye. I just watched a briefing about the storm by Atlantis' management, and they said the eye passed to the west of Nassau, which would also put it to the west of CC (meaning Nassau and CC were east of the eye). I think that means they got more wind than storm surge.

Us too. Especially if Matthew does the loop they are predicting. I think we are not going to the Bahamas, I'm hoping we can still get out of PC and then will perhaps head to Cozumel like this week's 10/3 sailing did. Actually I'm not sure I want to go to CC and see it all barren and sad... I'd rather go when it is in its full glory.

Yes, October 17th, expecting the sea, Cozumel, sea itinerary. We just hope we can get a rental car and gas to get us there. We arrive 2 days prior.
