Hi all,
I did not know her.she was a paramedic for the FDNY and just passed away leaving behind 2 children and a husband.

Wake Schedule For 9/11 Worker Who Died Of Cancer

March 18, 2006

A wake is being held Saturday in the Bronx for a retired paramedic whose death is being blamed on the recovery work she did at the World Trade Center site.

Debbie Reeve, 41, was a paramedic with the F.D.N.Y. for 17 years. She died Wednesday of mesothelioma, a rare form of lung cancer often caused by asbestos.

Reeve's husband David, also a paramedic, says his wife worked at the Trade Center site morgue right after the terror attacks. He also took part in the recovery effort.

He says they were initially told the air was safe to breathe.

"The first two weeks we were there they didn't require any respiratory protection at all: no masks were worn because we were told the air quality was OK,” said David Reeve.

Fire Commissioner Nicolas Scoppetta has classified Reeve's death as "administrative line of duty" and says the department will cover up to $25,000 in funeral expenses.

The viewing for Debbie Reeve will take place Saturday and Sunday afternoon at the San Andreas Presbyterian Church on Soundview Avenue.

Her funeral is set for Monday morning.

This is really sad. My heart goes out to the family.

I am sorry for her and her family.
I am glad her death was determined to be in the line of duty.

Were the safety officials that incompetent to think masks weren't needed?
Or what made lying about the air quality necessary?

Watching the news in Mass, DH and i knew the air couldn't possibly be "safe" to breathe just because of the particulates, nevermind what fumes might be involved from burning plastics.

I'm so sorry for the family :( I hope her Husband doesn't develop the same type of illness from having been down there...

How soon after 9/11 did the first responder's start with medical problems? It must have been relatively soon I would think?

This is so sad. I know people, both in Washington and NYC, who are battling health conditions related to the attacks. I remind my friends and family in California that people are still suffering from the attacks and we must keep them in our hearts and best wishes. They are heroes in every sense of the word.

hi,
This is a big step for the FDNY.Admitting that it was line of duty is good.she was a non smoker. As for several others within the dept who also passed were not so lucky.FDNY guys Tim keller 48 and Felix hernandez 28 both died in 2005 from lung problems. Both never smoked a day in thier lifes and both were denied any help from the FDNY or NYC when they got sick. Not untill after thier deaths that it was confirmied it was wtc related. Many are sick.many have medical problems all different kinds of problems. One of the guys in the FDNY who i knew went home after a hard day at ground zero in june 2002 wrote a sad letter about what he saw at ground zero and how bad it really was,Put a shot gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger. His name was danny stewart and he was 27.His suicide was the first from sept 11,but not the last.

Many of my guys have expirence mental or medical problems.divorce rates are thru the roof in the FDNY after 9-11,alcohol and drug use up.The dept seemed to want to fight every case saying it was not sept 11.This one was history. This is the first death that the dept has agreed was caused by 9-11.It's not about money. Some of my guys who are very sick and can't work cause of lung problems are on medcations that are in the hundreds of dollars a week.If you can't work and they say its not work related then you don't get paid and if your not getting paid how do you cover bills, rent or medication cost.Tim keller ran out of medication 3 weeks before his death,he was being evictied ,his car repossed. He was a family man children, wife. He choose to pay his rent and not get his medication to help him breath. He went with out lung meds for 3 weeks and then stopped breathing at home and passed.THIS SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED TO HIM.

Who knows if he still be alive today if he was able to get his meds??Felix aged 28 same story got kicked out of his apt in nyc and was forced to move in with his parents in florida.no work,no pay.How can one fight the nyc or go to FDNY medical test living in fla??we have all heard about billions of dollars given to the city for this one issue.Where is it.Why could these men just been given meds to help them breath. They were not asking the city to buy them lexus or bmw's the only wanted to pay thier rent and have food on the tables for thier familys.Funny things is dunkin donuts got 30 million from this fund. Not one of thier stores even had a broken window from the collapse.A not named water company charged the dept a huge amount after stopping and giving firemen/cops and ems workers cases of water on sept 11.It was said to be 500% increase of the rate of a bottle of water.

That makes me sick.

This could possibly be the most disgusting thing I have ever read on these boards. :sad2: I'm not a citizen of the state of New York, much less the city, but is there anything a normal person can do to help, somehow? A letter to a congressman? Anything at all?

That tragedy just continues on and on. I am so sorry for all those rescuers now suffering these effects. What can we do? How can an ordinary citizen be heard? Who can we speak to?

I have no words to offer right now, I am speechless :grouphug:

It is so sad, another victim of terrorism. Many more than the ~3,000 that were counted.

I flew in and out of Newark on Thursday, both times I could see the NY skyline and Statue of Liberty. Lower Manhattan looks so empty without the Towers.

You are all heroes and this is very sad...my prayers are always with everyone of our firefighters, policemen and military.

very very very sad to read your post. Thanks for letting us know that this is still happening.

Those of you who do not live in or near NYC don't realize that 4 + years later we are all still living with this on a daily basis.

The picture of that woman and her family in the NY Daily news was heartbreaking.
