Animal Kingdom- terrified of snakes...

You need not worry. I share your “distaste” for snakes.

I have been all over WDW across many years. I have been to every park, stayed at most resorts, eaten at most restaurants, and experienced many extraordinary backstage tours. I have fished the lakes, traipsed all over Tom Sawyer island, explored the campground trails, done every safari tour, and occasionally slipped into areas where Disney Security would probably be displeased to find me.

I have never — not once — seen a wild snake on Disney property.

As long as you stay in the normal tourist areas, where people typically walk, you are very very very unlikely to encounter a snake.

If you are still worried, just make some extra noise. Stomp your feet, bang the door, rap the wall — something that will create a bit of noise and vibration. Believe me, any wild snakes lurking about are just as disinclined to meet you as you are to meet them. You need not worry.

I realize my fear is largely irrational but I'm with ya. Yup, we asked and a CM said Rafiki's. I averted my eyes and walked quickly past the one on the trail but yeah if I ever saw one 'in the wild' my reaction would be swift, severe and in the opposite direction possibly with squealing.

I have the same fear - and I live in FL! To me it's about the only bad part of living here. Having said that, I don't have any problems in Animal Kingdom, the actual locations they are kept are easy to avoid and I have never "knock on wood" seen one out wandering anywhere among the parks or resorts.

I saw one last April at the Grand!! We were over renting a boat. I am scared to death of them as well and it was very long black snake. A cast member in a golf cart caught it and took it away though...thank God!!!

I have a snake phobia. I have easily avoided seeing snakes at AK. (Have also been lucky to never see one in the wild in Disney parks too). My daughter has a bird phobia. That is a much bigger issue than my snake one

Lucky me, I have both a bird and a snake phobia, lol! I once screamed and dropped to my knees in the middle of the street in Frontierland , because a bird flew "at me".

Am I the only person who is disappointed when they don't see a snake at WDW? Snakes are awesome!

I saw a tiny corn snake (mostly harmless, non venomous snake that many people keep as pets) at the AoA near our room in the Little Mermaid section. It was funny watching CMs freak out and try to catch it while I was having my morning tea. The way they were acting, you think it would have been a cottonmouth or a coral snake (snakes that are actually venomous)!

I keep hearing tales of those large black snakes swimming in the lazy rivers at the Disney waterparks, I was really disappointed that I didn't see one swimming in them.

Did I mention I used to keep pet snakes as a child?

It’s something primal for a lot of people. Evil snakes have been feared and vilified since Biblical times. Wasn’t it a serpent who offered Eve an apple? ;)
Eve made up all that stuff about the snake .... she just really wanted an apple

Snakes are more shy than birds. They hide in grass, plants, sticks, etc. If you don’t poke around too much in places say like, your toddler’s Fisher Price plastic grill, you may not encounter any.

However, birds are everywhere 24/7. You just hope to never have a physical encounter with one.

Speaking of which, who else saw the photos of that high school kid being taken down by a Canada goose on a golf course? :scared1:

I. Hate. Snakes.

However I can view them from inside a glass which most are in animal kingdom. Otherwise you’ll be fine, no worries.

My daughter did that at AK. We knew the parrots fly overhead at park open so she always goes into a store then but in the middle of the day a flock flew right over her head and she collapsed on the ground with arms over head screaming and sobbing. She was 12 at the time. She recovered fast but it wasn’t pretty to see. The worst is when someone feeds the birds when we are somewhere. That panics her too. I feel bad for her because for the most part I don’t run into snakes in my everyday life. Birds are everywhere.

Tell your daughter to hang in there, @MinnieMSue.

In my early 20s, I completely flipped out in Battery Park one time over being surrounded by pigeons in mating season. There are probably long time financial district employees still laughing about the girl who started screaming like a banshee and had to be carried out of the park by her coworkers.

I have become less bird phobia over the years. Between child birth and the horrors of watching loved ones stricken by cancer, birds just don’t scare me like they used to.

Once when we were staying at FWC I was walking to the quiet pool when I noticed a snake coming straight down the sidewalk towards me. So I keep walking until I get about 15 yards away and realize, he's not going to yield :scared:. So I finally had to cross the street...very embarrassing :guilty:

Thanks. That is good to hear. My snake phobia is better too. I can now see a cartoon snake without freaking out. Just kidding - sort of. Cartoon ones did freak me out as a kid but I actually made it through our zoo’s Reptile house last week pretty calmly.

Were your arms wildly flailing about while running full speed screaming SNAKE* at the top of your lungs?

Crossed the street? No worries

*twice. Once at Santa Monica Pier and once in Central Park.
