nice Lou...nice.....

Seems like I've done a lot of THIS this week, but I need to ***** for just a minute:

AJ's class spends 20 minutes doing "silent reading" each day in class. AJ has been reading the first Harry Potter book....he's pretty proud of the fact that he's reached page 100 already! We've spoken extensively with him regarding what he's read, and are confident that he is comprehending the story. My complaint is the teacher sent home a note indicating that the books the children read for silent reading cannot be longer than 50 pages. I'm a bit confused....why are we encouraging mediocracy? Wouldn't you want to encourage your students to read what is challenging to them?
What am I missing?? I know I'm not feeling well, and that tends to make me a bit jaded about everything...but I'm totally missing the boat here.

Steph...that is pretty ridiculous! Why does it matter how many pages the book has as long as they are reading and enjoying it? Did the teacher say WHY the book could only be 50 pages? Does she want him to finish the book during the silent reading period?

Alan, it sure makes you feel helpless, doesn't it? I can't imagine the destruction in your area. It has been pouring down rain here all day today. I just looked out my side window into my neighbor's yard across the street. It is completely under water! The creek behind them is overflowing.

Steph - I don't get it either!?!?! His teacher should be proud of his efforts. What does it matter how many pages are in the book? Why shouldn't he try to put forth a greater effort? That's a stupid message his teacher is teaching him. I'd be mad, too.

AA~

Steph~I can't understand why the teacher has a problem with books over 50 pages:confused:

Alan, glad to see you back. I understand your dilema.

Steph, I could understand if she wanted the book to be longer than 50 pages but I would really question her as to why it needs to be shorter. I am with you on this one.

Sarah is going to WVU tomorrow for the football game. It is supposed to be flooding there and I heard the govenor has declared a state of emergency. I hope she will be ok.

A lot of our roads are flooded right now......The bus had a difficult time getting home...had to take 2 different routes. There are some kids still at the school who cant be dismissed due to flooding. I just cancelled hair cut appts for kids and we are staying in tonight.

Is it too early for jammies?:teeth:

Donna's going to slip into her PJs, have a margarita, put a bowl on her kids'/cats' hair and cut it herself.

This could be good....

Very few showed up and we are not doing anything. Those who did not come in (and we know they could have) are not going to be charged time, yet those who are here will not earn comp time or anything.
Are you sure we don't work for the same company????
We had a very similar situation after a major blizzard a few years back.

Sorry to hear of the work situation Alan but I'm glad everyone got through the storm with minimal damage. I beleive I'll have one of those Hurricanes!!! :drinking1

Steph - another vote in your corner about reading. I can't imagine a teacher who wouldn't want a kid to try to excell. Maybe she needs a bonk on the head or a kick somewhere else!!!

there will be NO hair cutting (I rescheduled!)

but option one and two sound good to me!::yes:: :teeth:

I'm home alone right now.....kids have gone to Grandma's house to spend the night. Lew & I are celebrating our anniversary a few days early by going out to dinner. We're using a gift certificate to go out for dinner at a restaurant we've never visited before. It looks lovely and it has quite an extensive menu...and I'm glad we're not footing the bill!!!!! Cafe Nuovo

Then we're heading down to Foxwoods because every 20 minutes from 9AM to 1:30AM they will randomly select a winner who will be awarded $1,000 in cash.

Please send some luck our way LK & SB!!!!! :hyper: :wizard:

What do you mean Lou?

I have had the tag for a looooooong time. I was having a friendly battle with a Tag Fairy who has now left, so I keep it as a badge of honor.

Or did you mean the "catty" comment in my sig? That's been there for at least a few weeks I think.

Gail, here's hoping you get lucky.

(At Foxwoods I mean....;) )

Alan I meant the run but not hide tag. I remembered the ashes one but not that. Then again I just realized you were from Alabama this week with all of the hurricane talk......:p

psssst..... Alan.............I think he is losing it! ;)

Gail....have a great time on your anniversary date! That restaurant looks very nice.....make sure you get dessert...........there aren't any calories when it is a special occasion! ::yes::

Hello all.

Calling all electrical wizards. My husbands favorite toy (52 inch TV) has decided today that it doesn't want to stay on. You turn it on and in about 7 seconds it turnd itself off. It doesn't matter if it is on via any of the remotes or the on/off button, it won't stay on. Any hints?

Steph, are they going to have book discussions and she is afraid that those reading longer books won't get to talk about them? I would send a note or email, or something and ask.

If you would, can you please say some prayers for one of my neighbors? Our cul-de-sac is severely flooded right now with the creek overflowing. We are ok right now in our house, so I went to the other houses to see if I could help out.

When I was talking with my one neighbor, I asked if they had their baby yet. He just looked at me, and my heart sank. He told me they had a little boy on 9/11, and he has had several surgeries because his esophagus wasn't attached to his stomach. Baby David had been doing better, but then he had another setback yesterday. The dad was also telling me that in addition to the problems with the baby and the flooding from these last two hurricanes, his mother died two weeks ago. I just about cried, it is so sad. Please keep baby David and his family in your prayers during this difficult time. :(

I'm sorry LK, I didn't see your post before I placed this meaningless drivel out here. I am so sorry for the family.

Ah, I see why you might think that but the running and hiding comment came from the TF before the ashes one did. It was part of the battle we were having then.

I had deleted a previous tag and the TF gave me that one. The ashes comment came afterwards.

There is almost no one here; I'm going home!

Y'all have a good weekend. :wave2:

Oh my, that makes me want to cry too LK. :(
The first thing that came to my mind when I saw that this little one was born on 9/11 is that there are many, many angels who left this world on that day and are watching over him.
