Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

Thank you.

Oregon as well as Washington. Sad.

I didn't mean or even think of the disboards. I usually catch NBC news, but was out and about on my bike.

Prayers to all, now and weeks to come.

I don't mean to be flippant or anything, but we could use some of that wet weather thrown our way in California. Really. It would make up for some of the low water in our reservoirs, especially in areas that don't tap into reservoirs filled with melting snow.

:sad2: I realize you aren't trying to be, but what we're talking about here is total devastation. Lives have been lost, hundreds of thousands of people displaced with their property and livelihoods destroyed and there is LITERALLY no road or rail access between the BC coast and the rest of the mainland. Every single roadway, including the Trans-Canada Highway is washed out. Some may take weeks or even longer to rebuild, stranding MILLIONS of people and preventing aid operations and the transport of untold amounts of goods being moved in either direction. This is the greatest natural disaster in Canadian history and no, you don't want any part of it.

Certainly I understand that this is a severe weather condition that's resulted in chaos, but so far I've heard of only one dead (from a mudslide) and mostly property damage. As someone who has lived through deadly earthquakes, fires, and storms, I get what destruction is. It may not seem as dire, but we do have an extreme water emergency here in Califonira, and I'm not kidding that we're desperate for water.

Those videos are very similar to the Great Flood of '51 and '93

The '51 flood changes our metro's landscape..literally and the cattle stockyards destroyed and never came back along with the airport being moved. The silver lining is this flood made them look at the levees which couldn't handle the amount of water and they improved them. When the '93 flood occurred those improvements made a big difference in the impact.

I've seen markers every now and then with the water level listed.

That said mudslides are seriously no joke. Just as we were talking about earlier with tornadoes water is amazing in it's power and destruction. I'm a big 'ole softy here but I always hate to think of the animals just as much as the people :( Same when it comes to fires and earthquakes and everything.

OK then.

It isn’t a competition of who’s had worse.

I think people need to just relax and stay on course for this thread.

Since our Thanksgiving is done and your Thanksgiving is coming up, how do you typically celebrate it. I've heard it said that for many Americans Thanksgiving is bigger than Christmas, is this true.
Christmas is way bigger than Thanksgiving for anyone I know.

We didn't do Thanksgiving or Christmas last year for my side of the family due to covid but this year we are. We normally have it at my mom's house (sometimes my aunt's). One of my cousins her and her husband go to IA to visit his family, for Christmas they stay in town. Last I heard my mom was checking if my other cousin and his wife were coming or were just going to her family.

We split the day between my family and my husband's mom's side of the family. This year my father-in-law did ask if we were going to go over to their place for part of the day because last year we did since my family wasn't doing anything, but we'll be going over to my family.

We'll be eating I think about 1:00-1:30 at my mom's then around 4:00-4:30 we'll go over to my mother-in-law's though I don't know for sure what time we'll be eating yet.

My sister-in-law doesn't eat pork anymore (picking up that habit from her boyfriend who is Muslim) so that complicates the menu for that.

I honestly like ham more than turkey these days as do a multiple family members on both sides

Yeah, it’s just historic for Canada and I just got a little excited. I apologize.

Okay, so are you stalking me now? (A JOKE).

I was on a call earlier with some fellow Canadians, some Americans, a guy from Netherlands and a woman from Northern Ireland. The Canada-Mexico game came up in the conversation! Admittedly, I don't think anyone but the Canadians knew about it (and I only knew because of you). But still.

It started because the guy from the Netherlands pointed out they qualified and offered sympathy to the woman from NI (because both Irish teams are out?).

Though somehow the non-Canadians thought we were talking about hockey at first (might have been the description of an outdoor game in sub-zero temperatures :) ).

And here I sit in Sacramento in the middle of the drought, having a drainage system put in my backyard so it doesn't flood when it rains, and the project is delayed because we have had too much rain and the ground is too wet for them to work. It is either drought or flooding around here. Of course, I've been in the house 38 years and finally getting around to getting the drainage fixed, LOL.

Interestingly, Covid restrictions had eased some here in Alberta last fall and we were able to travel to my hometown for Thanksgiving with family. By Christmas we were back under a strict "no private gatherings" order so Christmas was much, much quieter with just the three of us in our own household. Totally upside down. :upsidedow Normally we'd have stayed home and hosted friends for Thanksgiving and travelled for our big family celebrations at Christmas.

It has really been terrible here in BC. I'm on Vancouver Island and the single route from Victoria to the rest of the island (The Malahat) is a mess. They have opened it to single lane alternating traffic every 30 minutes during the day and from 6pm-6am it is going to be shut down entirely.

As of right now, there is NO way by road into or out of Vancouver. Vancouver, the largest city in BC, is essentially cut off from the rest of the province by road.

:grouphug: Our hearts are with you. It makes the Calgary floods of 2013 look like a mudpuddle. Hopefully you and yours stay safe. :flower3:
Question: Is there any route out on the mainland by going south through the States? We're hearing of hundreds and hundreds of trucks full of eastbound cargo stranded with no plan. Would something like that be viable?

The flooding here is awful. I am not affected but live 45 minutes from one of the communities that are ina state of emergency so I have many friends and colleagues who are trapped. My inlaws city is trapped on both sides. No flooding near their homes but they can’t go leave the area.

Now one of these cities has a fire as well.

Seeing photos out of areas are shocking. 😢

I am near Calgary as well but have friends stuck in Vancouver. They are in White Rock right now and thankfully have their passports as they are going to cross the border into Washington and then travel up to the USA/Osoyoos and head home to Vernon that way. She said that the Feds removed the testing requirement for short trips (72 hours) for them to be able to do that so that is what they are attempting today.
