Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

They tried expansion, starting with the Sacramento Gold Miners.

When was this? I had no idea... :confused3

:rotfl2:Ah, God bless the CFL - the most unimaginative league in the history of sports. There are only 9 teams in the league and of all the possible names/words in the English language, two of them used the same one (Saskatchewan Rough Riders and Ottawa Rough Riders). After a hiatus of some years, the Ottawa team regrouped and when it did, it couldn't even think up a name; they go by their jersey colours - the Ottawa RedBlacks. The team from Edmonton became more socially sensitive two years ago and changed their name from the Eskimos to the Elks. Why the Elks? Because they still wanted to use their same stylized entwined double-E logo. And Winnipeg's team, the Blue Bombers, couldn't even come up with an actual logo. They've just printed a big, block-letter W on their shirts and called it good. :rotfl:

I wouldn't call them unimaginative, I mean they used to use "Our balls are bigger!" as their marketing slogan.

Why pick on the Raps? They're your team too. :flower3: Funny that you mention it though. Last season, due to Covid, the Raps had to homecourt in Tampa. It must have been tough in lots of ways but sometimes you could actually see the bench wincing as they got boo'd by what theoretically should have been their home crowd. :sad1: Lots of chatter at the time about what effect that had on the ultimately woeful season.

Having a team by default doesn’t count lol

Duly noted…

And just in case…

Toronto Maple Leafs (&Toronto Marlies)
Toronto Rock (lacrosse)
Toronto RAPTORS 😊
I was but I like this idea better. Do Canadians/Americans know their local sports teams, even if they don’t follow the sport?
