Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

Passive aggressive insults.

It was interesting to think about.

I think Canadians are schooled and skilled in sarcasm, and at times that can come off as passive aggressiveness in conversation and more easily in texts and on message boards. When it is a different animal. (Of course does not mean no Canadians are passive aggressive ;))

Many times we are definitely trying to get a point across and are agitated by a lot of tunnel vision at the same time. A lethal combination. And at times we are JUST agitated. No reason needed.

But sometimes we are simply having fun and teasing. And it can not be read. I realize an entire country of individuals can not be boxed, but nonetheless this aspect is common.

Many of the Canadian women on this board, don't know enough men, are some of the most straightforward people. So something is read in an off way by others. I HATE passive aggressiveness more than any trait (A lack of integrity might be higher). Straightforwardness and passive aggressive behaviour are of course not congruent.
And guess what - that doesn't mean I agree with them but I never ever have to read between the lines. Nor do I smell lies and disingenuous behaviour. And God did give me that skill, which can become an exhausting ability.

I'll take the answer in a different direction that doesn't have to be seen as the ultimate negative:

Don't all cultures have some sort of this? Like each culture has their own way of throwing insults and def. some are passive aggressive or backhanded some are just more hidden, some don't even pretend to be hidden, etc.

Some lose their punch when your audience doesn't know what you're insulting them/commenting about though. The DIS ironically is where I discovered the other way of meaning "Bless your/his/her heart". I'm sure at some point in my life I've heard it in the not so nice way but the DIS is the place where that had become (haven't seen it as often) normal to see, I doubt the first time I saw it I really caught what was going on. I'm sure we've all been a victim of an insult that bounced off of us because we didn't quite get the reference.

Maybe not on the same track as the question posed but one of the things my husband and I find ourselves doing is watching tv shows, or YouTube videos, comedy specials, movies, etc picking up in the way different countries and cultures speak to each other. In a sorta fascinating way seeing how something that is not an insult there would be an insult here and vice versa.

Absolutely. And SO fascinating. I taught immigrants for years. And as much as we all are "stereotypes are not real", some aspects most definitely are. The real danger is having them in the hands of ignorant people, and those who never ever question their own thoughts a la whatever I think is the gospel.

My SIL is Colombian, born and raised. My niece and nephew are American, but Colombian mother and Canadian father of course!

My SIL does not even crack a smile during moments of humour a la Austin Powers or Wedding Crashers. It is beyond not thinking it is stupid (which she does think :rotfl2:), she does not get it, at all. She is intelligent enough to know that we are not idiots laughing at nonsense (both niece and nephew quote these kind of movies), it simply does not compute. There is not my taste and there is does not compute. And she herself is both humorous and fun-loving - not unlike these type of movies.

(And because this is the annoying disboards
:sad2: no that does not mean no Colombians find this type of humour funny.)

Successful International comedians know this of course exists. Russell Peters has talked extensively how he changes his routine in certain countries.
