American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread**

The poor kid, Everyone(not just on Dis) is bashing Kevin so much, can we just be happy for him?I know he's not the best singer in the group.
But isn't nice to see an average or maybe dorky looking kid doing well.
We all don't look like Katherine or Ace so let's see who the "average"
americans are and who they voted for.

He'll be gone within 2 weeks, let him enjoy it and be a star for awhile.

Overall I'm rooting for Chris.

Wow - what makes you think that Kevin or John Stevens for that matter are unattractive. Unattractive to one person is extremely attractive to another. I thought Constantine was unattractive, Bucky does nothing for me, but others love them & would fall at their feet given the chance.

I am shocked by your way of thinking. It's actually very sad & unfortunate for you that you believe those things. Others said they hoped you were a teen & not a parent, but I think in a previous post you mentioned your DS's friends or something, so sadly, I don't think you are a teen. :guilty:

Okay - I'm off my soapbox now - back to the AI discussion.

Well, we do all have personal opinions on what is unattractive. I think they are and I'm not alone. I also thought that Constantine was just plain unattractive too and Bucky also does nothing for me. That is wonderful that others love them. What that has to do with me finding them unattractive is beyond me. Can I not say one is unattractive for fear of making someone on here upset? I think not! This is a thread to discuss all things AI. Did I call anyone names here that liked the ones I do not like? No. Did I make fun of those that think evin is good looking? No. Did I make fun of Kevin's lisp like some did here? No. What I did do was tell what MY experiences as a substitute have come across in terms of what teens like or not. I myself married a geek and he is pretty darn good looking. I have nothing against them. Now, I have better things to do then to argue with you or anyone else on why anyone misunderstood me. Let's get back to the topic of this thread and drop the petty argung.

Why can't AI limit the number of votes? Dancing With The Stars did and it seemed to work fine.
I'm all for that. I have yet to vote but will start this week. I usually only vote 5 times at the most for my favorites. It would be great if there was a limit. That would show a more fair vote for everyone.

Oh come on...the Ford commercials are just for fun, and I think they're cute! :flower1:

I loved this weeks Ford commercial. We look forward to them. Most are pretty cute!

50's song suggestions --

To quote Herman Munster, "Darn Darn Darn!" One song I would love to hear Taylor sing is "Promised Land", originally by Chuck Berry and later covered by Elvis (it's the song that Tommy Lee Jones pops into the 8-track in Men In Black as they enter the tunnel) was originally done in 1964. However, there's quite a bit of Ray Charles that would suit Taylor. IhopeIhopeIhope he does "Mess Around". He would bring the house down with that one.

Kevin doing "Great Balls Of Fire" -- the material would just write itself. :lmao: He'll probably be better off with something familiar like "Rock Around the Clock".

Chris -- something like "Johnny Be Good" or "Jailhouse Rock".

Bucky -- some rockabilly or maybe even some Johnny Cash.

Kellie may be in trouble this week, unless she can find something by someone like Patsy Cline that would fit her. I just don't think she has enough control over her southern drawl to keep the twang from coming through when she sings.

Here is my list of 50's songs.

Lisa: Tennesee Waltz
Taylor: I've Got A Woman
Bucky: Don't Be Cruel
Katharine: Who's Sorry Now
Mandisa: Dedicated to the One I Love
Ace: Let it Be Me
Kevin: Summertime Blues
Chris: Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On
Paris: What a Difference a Day Makes
Eliott: Mona Lisa
Kellie: It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels

Ok I will take a stab at predicitions as what each can sing in 50's week.

Mandisa is the only one I have no clue about.

Chris definetly Elvis

Taylor - I Got a Woman by Ray Charles is my first choice or Tutti Frutti, Johnny B. Goode, Ain't that a shame, Great Balls of Fire, This should be his night so many to choose from

Bucky- Summertime Blues, or Suspicious Minds both fit his voice I think.

Lisa- Cathy's Clown or Wonderful World

Paris- I would like Stormy Weather Billie Holiday, or some Ella Fitzgerald (Paris should do well tonight as well)

Katharine- Unchained Melody, Save the Last Dance for Me, Under the Boardwalk

Kelli- A little harder with her accent but I like White Lighting fun or It's Only Make Believe for a ballad Conway is harder to pull off than a fun Possum.

Ace- Whole Lot of Shaking Going on for fun or Earth Angel any Everly Brothers fits his voice.

Kevin- Bye Bye Love (Ace could do this as well) That'll be the Day.

Elliot I would say should do Unforgettable, or You Send Me Sam Cooke I think he could do Wonderful World as Well

So much great music in this Decade safe choices to me are Chuck Berry Twist, Twist Again, Good Golly Miss Molly, Jailhouse Rock, Yakety Yak, all songs that no matter who sings them if they aren't butchered we all love and dance to.

So funny Nancy Lisa I agree with but didn't think many would know that song, Kellie I like that song choice but since she is already in trouble for her accent I didn't want to pigeon hole her which I am afraid this song would do. Mandisa great choice I just didn't think of it.

Edited to add: Patsy Cline is more 60's than 50's at least all the hits we know and love are early 60's so Kellie can't do these songs thank God!. I love Patsy and think Leanne Rimes is the only current singer who needs to try and pull her off.

Wow...Kelli might be cute all dolled up but I truly don't think her voice is the best of the group. I think her audition sounded better than anything she has done on the show so far.

Wow...Kellie in the final three? I agree with Simon on the other two because they are the two I want in the end, but I'm thinking it will be Katharine hanging in there with them. I'm hoping to lose Kellie when we get down to 4 or 5.

As for flaming people for their choices, I think that is so wrong! I don't care for Kevin personally but if others honestly like him, I think that's great. I like Chris, Katharine and Bucky, and would hope not to be flamed for those favorites.

Those are my favorites also :thumbsup2

Here is my opinion...

I wish they would limit the amount of calls/votes....I just think the producers get a kick out of saying.. "we had 55 million votes last night!"

Love the show...always have...just wish they would "tweak" it to be more FAIR in the voting process. I do not have 2 hours to sit an waste voting for my faves. I may vote once or twice and that is it. I am too busy to sit around making hundreds of calls!
ITA I think the producers do enjoy counting the number of votes-maybe they think that is the number of viewers too??

::yes::

She has to eventually knock off some of her nerves.

As far as the unlimited voting goes, while I think it does seem inherently unfair to let teenie boppers vote nonstop for someone to get further in AI, I don't think the producers would look at it this way. AI is a huge marketing focus group. The entire premise behind AI is to "discover" the person that can be shaped into a "music star" and sell lots and lots of records and lots of tickets and make lots of money for the producers. Well, who spends their money on CDs, posters, and concert tickets but teenagers!!!!? So the fact that teenagers would propel the candidate to the top is only validating the premise of the show: the one who gets the most votes wins. Votes = Money when the contest is over.

A little cynical, but I still love the show. But that's the way it is. And I just take comfort in the fact that my faves: Taylor, Chris, Katharine will still probably get recording contracts. They just won't have the "AI Machine" behind them.

I remember Bucky said he liked Suspicious Minds by Elvis, so he'll probably do that. ::yes::
Bucky definitely will do something by Elvis because he said he really wanted to do an Elvis song in an AI interview but it can't be Suspicious Minds this week. Elvis recorded Suspicious Minds in 1969!

Ace, well, based on his previous song choices, he may attempt some Johnny Mathis. :lmao:
A Johnny Mathis song would actually be a good choice for Ace. I think he'd do it well.

This may be old news but here goes.

My mom taped Dancing with the Stars for me and I'm just now watching it. I know, I'm behind the times and I don't want to know who wins.

Anyway, they limited their calls to 10 per phone number and one per e-mail address. I wish AI would do the same. It can be done.
