American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread**

Bucky definitely will do something by Elvis because he said he really wanted to do an Elvis song in an AI interview but it can't be Suspicious Minds this week. Elvis recorded Suspicious Minds in 1969!

A Johnny Mathis song would actually be a good choice for Ace. I think he'd do it well.

Bucky' brother, Rocky has said that Bucky does a mean JAILHOUSE ROCK!!!

This may be old news but here goes.

My mom taped Dancing with the Stars for me and I'm just now watching it. I know, I'm behind the times and I don't want to know who wins.

Anyway, they limited their calls to 10 per phone number and one per e-mail address. I wish AI would do the same. It can be done.

Actually, the number of votes allowed on DWTS per each person was limited to the number of dancers left in the competition. If 10 celebs were left, 10 calls could be made, if 5 celebs remained, 5 calls could be cast, and so on.....

I'd like to see Mandisa do Fever originally recorded by Peggy Lee in 1958. She's the only one who could do it justice. :thumbsup2

:rotfl2: I just found a website that lists the best songs of the 1950's. Can't you see Kellie singing Tammy. OMG! She IS Tammy!! :lmao:

How about Elliott doing Mack the Knife or Love letter in the sand? Taylor could do 16 Tons or Green Door which, by the way, is the first song I ever remember hearing on the radio. I was 8 year old at the time.

And I have the perfect item for Kevin... he can sing the Chipmunk song! :rotfl:

Sorry. ;)

I don't know... Johnny Mathis had a wonderful voice and I wonder if Ace wouldn't rather avoid being compared to him. Since he likes to sing in falsetto voice, I wonder if something from one of the early, early Motown type bands might not be best? Like The Platter for example. I'm not clear on when they did their stuff but I'm guessing that it was at least partially in the 50's?

Yeah, I noticed that as I've watched the shows. You can see what I've been doing this afternoon.

It would be great if AI would do the same.

As far as the unlimited voting goes, while I think it does seem inherently unfair to let teenie boppers vote nonstop for someone to get further in AI, I don't think the producers would look at it this way. AI is a huge marketing focus group. The entire premise behind AI is to "discover" the person that can be shaped into a "music star" and sell lots and lots of records and lots of tickets and make lots of money for the producers. Well, who spends their money on CDs, posters, and concert tickets but teenagers!!!!? So the fact that teenagers would propel the candidate to the top is only validating the premise of the show: the one who gets the most votes wins. Votes = Money when the contest is over.

A little cynical, but I still love the show. But that's the way it is. And I just take comfort in the fact that my faves: Taylor, Chris, Katharine will still probably get recording contracts. They just won't have the "AI Machine" behind them.

Although I agree with you mostly...I do not totally agree. Look at Clay Aiken coming in 2nd behind Ruben...Clay has outsold Ruben in all aspects by far.

But, your point is mostly true :thumbsup2 and understandable.

I think that's because to some extent our votes don't matter. They were so dead set on Ruben winning and they made it so obvious. I don't think they would have let anyone else win. I was so angry when Clay lost to Ruben because I knew there was no way that Ruben had more votes. Anytime I went on any message boards there was about 1 Ruben fan for every 20 Clay!! That's ok, it was obvious after they sold their records who the real winner was.

I loved seeing everyone's predictions on who might sing what. I hate waiting to find out the song choices....can't wait until Tuesday! :teeth:

I have always wondered why they don't limit the number of votes per household as well....maybe it does not really matter, and just want to say the number like someone else said.

Wow, there sure are a lot of posts to get caught up on when you go away for a few days!!!

Really looking forward to this week. Hopefully it will be better than last week. (I'm talking to you Ace!!! I want to see you on tour!!!) I'd also like to hear Taylor sing more than half a song and his back up singers sing less than half a song! Chris can continue on with his greatness. Katharine and Elliot need to jazz up their stage presence (a few lessons from Mandisa might help) and Bucky needs to stay away from the hot rollers. The rest...meh.

I watched American Idol Extra on the Fox Reality Channel earlier this evening. The bulk of the show was an exit interview with Melissa McGhee. They also had an interview with her family and friends immediately after the show concluded. This is only the second season I'm watching AI so I don't recognize all the faces from the first three seasons but several other AI finalists were backstage speaking with Matt Rogers (Does that sound right to long-time AI watchers?) There was also a short spot hosted by Mikalah Gordon with info on what other past AI finalists are doing now, for example, Kimberly (whose last name I don't know) has just been signed as the new model for Lane Bryant. (She's a very pretty plus-sized girl. I hope I got her name correct.) There was a segment on Justin Guarini and the new jazz CD he's making and another segment (about 5 minutes) with Bo Bice on what he's been up to since coming in second last season. Filming of his music video, Katrina relief efforts he's been involved in, etc. There was also an interesting piece with the vocal coach for the current female finalists. Much of this was centered around her work with Melissa.

I know that not everyone gets the Fox Reality Channel so I thought I'd share.

I have DirecTV, which is how I get it. It's on channel 250.

If you click on the Fox Reality website, there's a link on the home page that you can go to and enter your zipcode and cable company to see if it's on your provider. I don't know how many cable providers offer it though.

I checked the link and it says I have it on my cable in my area. I have the highest tier of cable offered so now I have to try and find it on my TV.

Edited for Figment 22...you did pretty good on the names. Matt Rogers is right. Kimberly would be Kimberly Locke, she was #3 the year of Clay and Reuban.

Locke should have won....... just my opinion of course!

I wish I got Fox Reality!

I watched the show last night too. I have DirecTV. I watched it on channel 800, the "freeview" channel. Those that have Direct TV should know what I'm talking about. It wasn't the Fox reality channel, but every commerical was for them so it was probably related somehow.

Mikalah Gordon is just as annoying on this show as she was on AI!

It's been on the freeview channel around the clock, but I mentioned it as a Fox Reality show because I figured some with digital cable would get Fox Reality. If anyone has DTV, it's on repeatedly.

As to Mikalah, as long as she doesn't open her mouth to sing, I find her amusing.

I failed to mention how classy Melissa was in her interview. She really seems like she's got her head screwed on straight.

Does anyone know if the contestants are actually getting paid at this point? When asked who she would miss most of all now that she'd been eliminated, she said that the person she missed most had already been eliminated and that would be Heather. Melissa said that she actually had been planning to fly her out to the coast. I assumed that all the contestants' expenses were covered for them, but are they also getting a stipend??
