Backpacks are totally my daughter's call, as are lunchboxes. Each year I ask her if she'd like a new one of each. Some years she says yes, some years she likes the one she had last year and wants to use it again.

They are small items in the scheme of things so I'm happy to let her make those decisions. If we couldn't afford new ones, it woud be a different matter.

My DS has been using his LLBean back pack since 5th grade...he will be a junior in HS this year.

LL Bean has a LIFETIME WARRANTY on everything they sell. If it wears out, you can take it back and they'll replace it, free, no questions asked.

DS16 used the same backpack from birth (as a diaper bag) until he was 11, when it wore out. We got it replaced, and he's used the second one ever since.

I found a very nice backpack at Target for my son last month. This is his first year using one so I don't intend on buying him another until his current one is shot.

My kids wear them till they fall apart. Usually that's after 2 years. My oldest has a Gap backpack that's in its 4th year. I threw it in the wash and it still looks O.K.

I had 4 bags for my entire compulsory school life (4-16) and then bought my own for the final two years. My parents wouldn't buy a new one unless the old one was beyond repair.

DD8 has a new one from LL Bean that I expect her to use until she at least goes to middle school. She had a rolling one from LL Bean that she used for 1st & 2nd grade but this year she'll be on the 2nd floor and it's too heavy for her to carry up and down the stair.

I'd rather buy a good quality one to use for a few years than a new one each year. A decent one will cost about $15-20 while a higher quality one will run $35-50. In the end you actually save $ and aggrivation.

We buy new ones every year. The kids look forward to that. We do keep the old ones though for sleepovers or scouts or something.

My girls are grown now and they are still using the Eastpak backpacks we bought for them in high school. Buy good ones as they are worth the price. Cheap ones fall apart fast but Eastpak and LLBean last and last. I even use an LL Bean backpack to take my sub supplies to school with me.

It was Land's End -- I just found it again

Not sure if that will work, otherwise put "customize backpack" in the search field. It doesn't want to come up if you just put backpack. They have messanger bags you can customize too.

It's not cheap (at least I don't consider it cheap ;) ) -- $65.00 but for DD I figure it translated into about $11/year for our planned use, plus I'm sure she'll be able to continue with it even after college for things.

The boys got the Critter packs.
Thanks!!! I spent $70 a piece on the last ones....so $65 isn't bad.

That's what I'm looking for!!!

Eastpak!!! That's the one I had, in fact I still have it somewhere 17 years later:rolleyes1

My kids have Jansport ones, which also have some kind of lifetime warranty.

Wow!! I never knew that, thank you!

My son is the one who said last year's backpack is still fine. :woohoo: It was his second from last year. We'll see how long it lasts.

He's past the stage of LL Bean's backpacks. Guess they aren't "cool" these days as far as he's concerned.

You guys buy your kids backpacks? DUring the summer I make my children cut the grass with scissors and then weave the clippings into bags to carry their school books. We are a "green" family! You guys just coddle your kids that's why they're soft! LizzY says to tell you "It's a hardknock life".:rolleyes1

My sons have always used their backpacks until they get unusable! :)

 ...and I thought Teresa was bad:sad2:

When it was time for DS to start school, I just sent him with an old backpack that was a promo item at the hubbykin's work. I guess since he's only 3, he doesn't seem to care that he doesn't have a 'cool' backpack yet. :p

I'm not cruel enough to make Harley use a backpack. I'm a good parent.
