Am I nuts for wanting to spend $900.00 on DS's 1st Communion Party?**UPDATE POST 87*

Considering the fact that this is also taking the place of the child's birthday party, if it's not going to cause financial hardships to spend the $900, and this is truly the best option you can think of, I would go for it.

Well, this may get me in a heap of trouble, but I wouldn't do it. I just don't agree with elaborate parties for every event in your life.

I think a First Communion should be a spiritual event and not an excuse for a big elaborate party. I would think that the reason for the party is going to get "lost in the shuffle" so to speak.
I totally agree.

If it sounds ok to you - go for it.

We do big celebrations for some things - not "every event" - so when we do celebrate big - we REALLY go big. O

For us - Christenings are BIG - first birthdays are big - Communions are big, confirmation, graduation - all other birthdays and everything are kept small.

I think a communion is truly a thing to celebrate so I say go for it :)

I know what you are going through. DD's communion is May 19th and we've had the restaurant booked since last November. It is customary around here to have a big party. Doesn't mean that we don't consider the event spiritual or any less important, just means that is the way it is done around here. I am paying about triple what you are just for the restaurant alone (having about 60 - 70 adults and children) and that doesn't include everything else that goes along with it. I say, do what YOU want to do and don't let anyone else sway you one way or the other.

We do big communion parties around here, as well as Christenings etc. I paid more for my children's christening parties (not bragging just giving a comparison). I think it is a great deal. It is very easy for a party to be expensive. Approx $24 a person is really reasonable. We are throwing a bridal shower for my sister and it's $30pp +tax and gratuity. There are no cheaper places and having it at home is out of the question (construction). I think it sounds like it is going to be great time. I don't think you will lose the spirit of the event either. You are celebrating that he received a sacrament. What a better place to celebrate than Dave and Busters?:confused3 Have a great time!

First Communion parties are big around here also. I have both dd's making First Communion on April 28th. Their dresses alone were almost $500! We're having a luncheon at a restaurant and that is costing about $20 per person not including cake (separate) and the wine we'll be bringing. Plus around here we do favors also. They are having chocolate cross lollipops and even with a discount (friends own a candy store) its about $2.00 per person.

I don't think $900 is an extravagant price for your area. Ds is making his 1st Communion next year so I'm getting hit two years in a row! We're having about 50 peopele at the party.

No, I don't think it sounds unreasonable. Especially for someone else to do cooking, cleanup, etc. You get to focus on your guests and hopefully get some really decent photos. :goodvibes This is a special event. In our church we do confirmation (sort of like first communion) when our kids are 12-14, and it's a big deal too. I hope you all have a wonderful day!

Your right it is a spiritual event but the children also deserve the celebration they work hard for it and our church even tells us to make sure that we celebrate the event. I don't see the spirit of the event being lost in the event if you are doing it for the right reasons. We as children and our parents always had parties for Baptisms, Communions , Confirmations, Weddings, Funerals etc... why not now? It's in celebration of the Spiritual event that took place and that is how our church looks at it also.Rolipoliefan go for it and have fun it's not often we get to celebrate these special events in our childrens life! Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation (which here the children do not make until they are in 8th grade) , Wedding! So I hope you and your family have a very memorable event!

I agree around here it is the same way also! :)

Are you kidding? $900 is nothing compared to what my BIL spent on his son's communion party last year in Chester County, PA.

It was a like a wedding reception held at a country club, 4 hour affair, buffet lunch, DJ, open bar, etc.

If you can get away with only spending $900, you're doing good!

For that many people $900 isn't bad at all.

I'm just trying to tie the words 'First Communion' and 'Dave and Buster's' together in my mind.

But heck, they do say that God is everywhere, why not at Dave and Buster's?

:rotfl:

OOPS sorry about this my computer was acting weird for a minute.

Does that include the games or will that be seperate? If its included I think its a great deal.

No that doesn't include the power cards, they would be extra. There are only 4 children though and 2 of them are mine.

Would you expect a Power card (equal to money) to play games if you were invited to a 1st Communion party at Dave and Busters?

And 1 more question: We have been moved away from our old neighborhood for over 5 years now. I still keep in touch with 2 of the neighbors, just talking now and then . Sometimes going out socially but maybe only once in a year period. I was invited to their kids 1st Communion, but we still lived in the neighborhood. And will be invited this May to the ones childs graduation. There are 9 of them total, would you invite them or just explain that its a family party? Which it is, except them.

I would buy the power cards. Otherwise it would be like going to Chuck E Cheese and not having tokens. I would also invite the other family. I would feel weird not to. JMHO.

I wouldn't expect a power card but since it's only 2 kids you'd really be paying for besides your own I'd get them. I have no idea what the games cost but maybe you could load each card with $10 and if the kids wanted/needed more their own parents would have to take care of it. As far as your old neighbors, if they would be the only friends invited I wouldn't bother. I know I'd feel weird being non-family at an otherwise family event.

As long as you can easily afford it, then no you are not nuts.

Honestly? It seems sacrilegious to me. Holy Communion is blessed event, and I think spending nearly a grand on a party (esp. at Dave and Buster's) cheapens it.

I agree, going to dave and busters seems pointless if you are not going to have cards to play the games...

I believe this is a combo party to celebrate the child's birthday too..
