ABC's series "Blackish" to film at WDW later this month...how does this affect things?

Its not interesting for me because Ive been on tv and movie sets with my son since he was 10, so the novelty is not there. I just dont want to lose fast passes or have lots of disruptions. "Wringing my hands over it" is kind of an overstatement, if mickeyluvr is implying me. I just know tv shows can shut down alot for extended periods of time and I was asking if anyone saw The Middle being filmed and how that affected the parks. But have a magical day!

I think Disney is more aware of their guests needs than a City is of it's citizens. They try hard to be sure that the majority of park goers are not troubled or delayed by the filming. In this case, the guests speaks louder than the movie/TV crew. Disney realizes that so many of their guests are there one time and to loose out on an attraction because of a film crew could well mess up a trip pretty badly.

I was there once when they were filming something in the walkways in front of the castle (about a year or so before the new hub) -- something with a chameleon or something. I actually saw it a while back and was like "THAT's the thing they were filming!" Wasn't an inconvenience at all, just had to be redirected a different way. I thought it was pretty cool to see a little behind the scenes.

Wishing you a safe and fun trip, OP :)

Ugh. I'm there that week too. I'd love to know the dates of this if anyone finds out.

If they mess up any of my plans, I'll be looking at Guest Services for some extra Fastpasses.

Filming permits require a mountain of paperwork and a lot of cash, localities love that cash. But if a crew is paying for a permit, they expect a certain amount of assess because film production is very expensive on a per minute basis. If you're paying dozens/hundreds of crew anywhere up to $125/hr , you want to get as much footage as you can in the permitted time.

Disney productions filming on Disney property allow both a lot more flexibility. Crews can get access to set up/film at night, they can film before rope drop, Disney can cut itself a deal on the 5-star accommodations required by SAG, etc. It does however, off-set labor expenses. They really only need the open park for outdoor day shots. Plus...the extras (park guests) are paying to be there (they don't require a release if you are filmed in the parks, but they usually are good about steering you away if you don't want to accidentally end up on camera).

I disagree. The expression, "Wringing your hands" means "as expression of worry or concern, usually over something you can't change." IMO, that is exactly what you have expressed, so it is a perfectly appropriate expression to use.

I truly don't think this is likely to have much impact either way. I'm sure they will do their best to be unobtrusive, and Disney's customer service is usually quick to respond when any problems do arise.

In the meantime, speculating about something that hasn't happened is a sure-fire way to put a damper on your vacation.

Only watched the show once, it seems like a nice comedy, but how will it affect things? My son is a professional actor who has had guest spots on shows, and the remote/non set shoots are pretty invasive, but I've bern at WDW when a Stacy video was being filmed and a commercial, and there was little disruption. But I can tell you that the shows that film in Chicago (Chicago Fire, Chicago Pd, Chicago Med, Empire) shut down whole blocks. Im wondering how it will affect fast passes, as the press release says they will film at all 4 parks, The Poly, and on rides. Anyone there when "The Middle" filmed a few years ago? Im usually not self centered, but this is our 25th wedding anniversary and like all Disnerds, I planned for months. I really love Diana Ross's daughter Tracee, who I think is full of sass, and the show seems like a good family show, but I am also concerned that it will affect the plans of all of us going 8/22-9/2.

We were at MK when they filmed the Middle and they had the area by the partners statue closed off the day we were there, but that was the only inconvenience we experienced. We were doing the Keys to the Kingdom tour that day and we saw Patricia Heaton, Neil Flynn and Charlie McDermott walking to their tour buses, located behind the Main Street area. I waved at Charlie and he waved back. Patricia was on her cell phone and wouldn't look at us. It was kind of fun to see them. Later as we walked out of the MK after the tour we saw them filming outside the main gate.

Yeah, you might want to go ahead and contact guest services now so maybe they can comp you some FPs in advance.

I love the show and think it would be cool to see them filming. We're there the 27th-31st so maybe we'll get the chance :) Missed The Middle by about a week when they filmed.

We're there that week as well... Disney should add a FP+ for a M&G with Anthony Anderson :)

If you watch the modern family episode and look in the background you can see cast members directing traffic. Pretty funny.

I guess the goldbergs won't get a Disney episode any time soon.

I hope to avoid it too. I don't watch the show so I am not interested in seeing any filming. I personal would not find it a "bonus" or "extra magical perk" if we stumbled upon the filming. We worked so hard to plan and I hope this does not throw a monkey wrench into our plans. We are already disappointed in all the closures (dinosaur, small works, btmrr) that if something else is closed for filming, it will be a major bummer. Oh well, we will just have to keep a good attitude and hope they keep it discreet.

Sometimes they show the family on a ride in these shows. I wonder what they would do if you had fp for say, 7dmt and they had to close it for a while to film. I think it takes a while to set up and film a scene. Hmmm. just "thinking out loud."

I don't think there will be much to worry about. My son's friends do a lot of filming with Disney. Many things are done before the park opens. And when filming is during park hours, there's usually a small area roped off. Event cm work the filming.
My husband was in the Christmas parade filming and they "marched" up then down Main Street. 10 total minutes on the street filming then sent back to change and to the bus.

Disney has it down to a science.

I'd like to know exactly when they'd be in the parks to be able to catch them taping.

But for those wondering and worried..none of your FP's or adr's will be affected. It's not like their going to be closing half of the park down and shutting out guests.

I asked around. Haven't heard yet. We'll be on our 25th Wedding anniversary trip during that time frame. If I hear, I'll post unless someone beats me to it. :)

Maybe they will film them on Small World, Dinosaur and BTMR since they will be down anyway. They can take all the time they need in those! :)

Some new information about the taping, AK is the ony park where they have given a heads up to CM. The show is also supposed to tape at MK and Epcot:
ABC’s critically acclaimed hit series “Black-ish” will film on location at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. In the episode, titled “VIP,” Dre decides to take his entire family on the magical, first-class vacation experience he was never able to have as a kid. On Aug. 23 and 25, cast and crew will be in the park and backstage at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park.

Africa will have several operational adjustments as part of the film shoot on Thursday, Aug. 25. On that day, Dawa Bar and Tamu Tamu Refreshments will not open until late afternoon. Additionally, several Entertainment sets will be moved to allow for filming in the area. These include:

  • Tam Tam Drummers of Haramba will have relocated sets at 10:55a, 11:55a, 12:55p
  • Muziki will have relocated sets at 10:25a, 11:25a, 12:45p
  • Harambe Soccer Meerkats will have a relocated set at 3:40
The episode airs Sept. 21st

Just back. It was about what I said. One morning we saw filming in the area around the flagpole of MK. That's the only evidence we saw of filming, with near zero impact on anyone's day UNLESS they stopped to take a photo. Most folks just walked right on past the area no problem.

Except...we happened to be lucky enough to ride an attraction with two members of the crew (the day) after the filming was over. I wouldn't have noticed except they had a VIP tour guide and were seated right with us.
