2011 Beach & Yacht Club FAQ

Oh sheesh! I'm feeling like a bad mom. This was the year I told the boys that they could probably venture off on their own at SAB. They will be 11 & 10 and both excellent swimmers. I really did feel confident that should there be any real problem, a life guard would be handy. I'm not comfortable, of course with my then 7-year-old daughter alone. No way, no how.

That doesn't mean that I will just let the boys go and not look for them. But I know they'll be enjoying the slide and other places of the pool that I thought that bit of independence would be good for them.

Okay, I'm ready for the slams, comments, suggestions, praises... LOL...

You are NOT a bad mom...I'm just a neurotic one...:rotfl:!! Seriously, I told my DH last night he might need to block me from these boards. I was 100% sure of my resort choices, but after reading the "I Hate the Beach Club" thread I was having second thoughts!!! I'm crazy!!!:confused3

I have 83 days to go:cool1::dance3::yay:

Is it too early to start packing???? This winter did me in and spring isn't looking much better....I just want to be in Florida now!!!!

If you have doubt, change your resort. Go somewhere you know you'll be 100% happy.

Everybody likes different things. Thank goodness!! Otherwise, we would have only one type of resort ... they would all be identical! Obviously the Y&B is not the best resort for everybody. Obviously the Poly and Grand are not the best resorts for everybody. We had a guest a few weeks ago that got upgraded to the Beach Club from Pop Century because they were overbooked. The mother was livid. Can you imagine? But she loved Pop Century!!! If the posters on that "hate BC thread" had done their homework, they wouldn't have even booked the Y&B. If you are a planner and do your homework, you will only book a resort that has what is important to you (like a crowded, loud, crazy with pushing guests, food spilled all over the place food court or a pool where you can see your children no matter where they go). Only you can decide what is important to you. Do you like being in one building or would you prefer walking ten miles to different out buildings? Do you like the monorail to take you to Magic Kingdom (and waiting 10 minutes for it every time and then the wait when it stops for "traffic") or would you rather walk into Epcot in 4 minutes? Would you prefer to take a bus to Hollywood Studios or a boat? Personally I prefer the bus ... I hate the boats. Are you going nonstop and only sleeping in your room or will you plan on spending lots of time at the resort and partake in the numerous activities around the resort?

There is a perfect resort for everybody and it is not the YC or BC or BCV. Thank goodness!!! Otherwise, the Y&B lovers would never get a reservation. However, on this thread, you will find out the answer to most of your questions about the Y&B so you can make an educated decision on what resort is best for you and your family.

My husband worked at the Contemporary for two years as a greeter. If he won a trip there, he wouldn't allow us to stay there. We hate that resort. I'm telling you that so you don't think I'm just talking good things about the Y&B because I work there. That is not true. I love the BC and do not care at all for the YC. They are the exact same resort ... same GM, same CMs, same amenities. However, the decor and guests are different over there. Some people love the Y&B but really do not care for the BC. One is dark woods and lots of adults and convention guests ... it's very quiet and serene. One is light, breezy, full of activity and kids and noisy (probably because I'm talking non-stop in the lobby). Different strokes for different folks. I just booked two rooms for Bob and me and Jeanne and Brian for next week at the BC. If it wasn't available, I would not have booked at the YC ... even though they basically want to stay there just for the pool. I just don't care for the "feeling" of the YC and refuse to spend that kind of money to stay somewhere that I don't 100% love. Again, different strokes for different folks.

Hope this helps!

I agree with everything Teena said (big surprise)!

We have stayed at BC, YC, GF and the Polynesian. We had a great vacation at all these resorts. For years we thought we would never stay anywhere other than the GF. It was the first resort we stayed at when we started bringing our younger kids. We loved being on the monorail with strollers.

Then we tried the Polynesian and also had a wonderful vacation. We had a great TPV room and really enjoyed relaxing there.

When we started staying at the BC/YC though we really found our home.
For us the convenience of walking to EPCOT (and for us we walk to DHS too), SAB, Beaches and Cream and the whole BC experience screams vacation to us!

Everyone is different. We stopped at Pop Century once just to see what is was like. We got a drink in the food court and DH said - no way would we ever stay here. It was messy, crowded, and although I'm sure this doesn't happen all the time - there was a lot of people in dripping bathing suits and bare feet - totally turned us off.

We tried to save money one trip and booked POR. Now I know tons of people love POR. We lasted about an hour before DH went over to the GF
and changed our reservation.

So for us the food court isn't a big deal. When we stayed at the GF we used ate at Gasparilla's a few time. It was okay - not terrible, but the arcade is right in the food court. We like Capt Cook's (dole whips!) but it always had a wierd smell in there so we would take the food outside anyway.

It all depends on what a deal breaker is for you. For us we don't like exterior corridors and we love room service.

To each their own, but I do wish people would research the resort BEFORE they get there to see if what that resort offers is what their family wants or needs.

I am a HUGE Polynesian lover, but I also love the BC/YC for different reasons. Please don't second guess yourself! You will love the BC/YC! Well, I hope you will

A couple of things for this post:

First off be aware that the wearing a loud shirt at the pool thing may sometimes back fire on you. One year I got one of those shirts for my husband. The only problem was that he fell asleep on the bed before we made it out to the pool and got lost in one of those hotel bed spreads. It took us DAYS to find him and we think it was on purpose too! Now we keep snacks on hand to lure him out of his hiding place so he joins us on vacation. A well placed placed Oreo cookie is irresistable to a cranky husband. Throw in a beer and he'll follow you everywhere.

Now for the second thing..... There is a thread for people who hate the Beach Club????? GEEZ!!

OK, here comes the third thing. There is no such thing as a bad parent when that parent is letting their child carefully spread their wings in a well supervised setting. Only the parent of a particular child would be in a position to "judge" whether that child is capable of some level of independence. Listen to what other people have to say but don't be intimidated or allow yourself to feel judged. Just try to think of it as another source of info that you may want to consider when making your decision. Only you know your children the best.

Just my 2 cents....

Marlton Mom

I fly out to Jeanne's on August 23rd and fly home September 3rd.

Thank you!!! I just had my CT scan at the radiation place this morning. I start radiation on 4/25.

:sad1: so sad I'll miss meeting you, as we arrive at BC Aug 27 and leaving Sept 1.

Marlton Mom - Yes, hard to believe, but there is a "BC didn't impress me" thread.

The strangest part was a poster who had NEVER even been to BC but "knew it wasn't really kid friendly".

I really have to stay away from that thread before I find myself banished!!!

AMEN TEENA!!!

I agree with you 100,000,000 %!!! Especially the difference between the YC and the BC! Those are my sentiments exactly.

Why couldn't I have been the one who was upgraded from Pop to the BC last December? I would of sprinted, luggage in hand from the exit of Pop to the entrance of the BC in world record time!

Love the constant buzz and hustle and bustle of the BC lobby, and of course who couldn't love the wonderful greeter there :). I want a resort that has a soul, that has the laughter of kids ringing through it, not some stuffy, quiet place where you feel like your afraid to use your outdoors voice like you're at Sunday mass!!

I know ... when that woman was so mad about the move from Pop, I actually thought about you! I'm so sorry I'm going to miss you and the family!

For sure do your research!! I would have been the founding memeber of the I HATE AKL THREAD whereas others LOVE IT!!! To each his own. Sometimes you need to STAY somewhere to know if it is for you. I was really torn between BC and YC last year and we opted for YC. WE loved it!!! Teena was even sweet enough to tour us thru BC and their CL lounge. We just much prefer YC. But BC was lovely but just not for us. Would I stay there if I couldn't get a room at YC? Only in the summer for SAB..otherwise BWI would have me back. So anyone can say anything on any thread but every experience is different, etc. I personally wouldn't stay at AKL if you gave me the room........

The problem I have with the Beach Club bashing thread was it doesn't seem balanced at all. If someone is actually going to complain that the "flat screen tv's are the thickest I have seen" or " it is not really a sand bottom pool, but a pool with sand on the bottom" it just seems over the top silly. :confused3

I know, I'm really bummed too. They have heard such wonderful things about you that they were really looking forward to meeting you! Maybe I can use your absence as a nice excuse to book another trip down!

I'll be down again solo in December for my yearly conference (and nooooooooooo I will not be staying at a Value resort again ;)) and pretty good chance I'm BC bound for that one, so at least we can catch up then.

I have it at the very top of my weekly planner to ship your gift down this weekend! My memory just isn't what it used to be so I have to have a reminder beep on my phone to remind me!!

I remember when I was as sharp as a tack. Now I'm as sharp as a bowling ball!!

And sometimes I think people aren't happy is when maybe it was a budget stretch and they envisioned soooo much for this amount of money they are going to pay and wind up disappointed....You envision X and get Y and are just disappointed.....and then every little thing bugs you....I hate to hear anyone unhappy with a resort pick b/c to me a resort is a HUGE part o my vacation....HUGE. I would be soooo bummed if I hated my resort...though hating BC YC?:confused3

I totally agree. For us, the resort is the most important part of our trip. We are anything but park commando's. We love to spend as much time at the resort as possible, which is why we love the BC so much. Don't get me wrong, we do put in our park time but we have never once hit a rope drop or stayed until closing time. The BC allows us to casually stroll over to Epcot after a morning by SAB, or in the evening when my DW and DD want to hang out at the resort and my DS and I want to squeeze a couple of rides in.

You can't put a price on convenience like that.

I think for me the other thread bothered me because I did so much research before picking BC and most of things mentioned, I already know about and am OK with. This is our first trip to Disney as a family. Last time I was there was when Animal Kingdom had just opened. I have only stayed at a MOD but my dream was the Poly (or so I thought until I started my research). I don't know why but the more I read and research the more I fell in love BC. We have toddlers and I still picked it because even DH got excited about it after I started tell him everything I had learned. I can't wait to get there and see it in person. I really hope we get to meet Teena too!
