Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin - ***SOFT OPENING TODAY 3/30***

However, while watching the video, it looks like everyone is just holding their blasters with both hands and the cars are slightly rotating on their own. Maybe the areas shown in the videos are places you don't really need to rotate the ride vehicle so that's why I didn't notice anyone using the joystick. :confused3

I know from personal experience not everyone liked to rotate the vehicles before, so it’s not necessarily unusual for people to not be using the joystick to rotate. I never ride with my husband because he doesn’t like turning around & just takes whatever position the ride places him in.

I'm not fond of rotating the vehicles either. If I ride with my husband, we barely move the vehicle and just basically make minor adjustments along the way. If I ride with one of our kids (adults), they're all so competitive that they would constantly be maneuvering the vehicle throughout the whole ride.

As for the video, I kind of expected those "testers" to be moving the vehicles around to be able to try all the different targets and to make sure things were working properly.

We arrive April 8th! I didn't think it would be open during our trip! The addition of the scores on the photos will be embarrassing for me, but my kids will love it! What Tier is this ride for LL?

Cast Member Playtests Begin Soon for Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Ahead of Reopening

While Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is scheduled to officially reopen on April 8th at Magic Kingdom, there will be a “playtest” period for eligible Cast Members as well. The playtest is designed to allow Cast Members the opportunity to experience the attraction while the attraction is still in development and final adjustments are made.

The Cast Member playtests begin this weekend and will continue into next week. At this time, no other preview opportunities have been officially announced. That said, we’d imagine that any previews or soft openings would occur after the Cast Member playtests conclude sometime late next week. If we had to guess, soft openings could start as early as late March or early April in the days leading up to the official reopening.

As always, any potential soft openings would be subject to attraction availability, and dependent on any last-minute adjustments the team would like to make to the ride. As of right now, I’d only suggest planning on riding Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin starting April 8th.

The blasters themselves are now handheld and interact with updated targets. WDWNT got to play-test the blasters and targets last summer.

The climactic battle scene is also updated to add Buzz. Disney teased Toy Story 5 Easter eggs and more surprises in the ride.

The exterior is going through an update, including a new sign.

Cast Member previews are now underway for the refurbished Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom.

The previews are expected to run for several days as Disney prepares the attraction for its April 8, 2026 reopening.

Preview Schedule

First public previews for select groups are set to begin March 29. Disney has not yet announced Annual Pass previews, but they are likely to take place before the official reopening date.

Cast Member previews give Disney employees a chance to experience the updated attraction and test the experience before it opens to the public.

First Look at Updated Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Scoring System & Interactive Targets in Action

As we’ve seen, the new blasters are handheld with a cord attaching them to the vehicle. Each vehicle has a green blaster and a red blaster. They light up when shooting a target.

The vehicles are brand-new and while this video doesn’t offer a clear look at the exterior, it does give us our first look at the interior. The digital screens show guests their current score. There are also various icons, possibly representing different achievements. The joystick to spin the vehicle is in the center of the console and there are handrails below the screens.

Previously, the maximum score was 999,999. Now scores can go to infinity and beyond. Disney has updated the ranking system and names:

  • +1,000,000 | Galactic Hero
  • 600,001 – 999,999 | Cosmic Commander
  • 300,001 – 600,000 | Space Ace
  • 100,001 – 300,000 | Planetary Pilot
  • 10,001 – 100,000 | Astro Aviator
  • 1,001 – 10,000 | Solar Navigator
  • 0 – 1,000 | Star Flyer

We first saw the Astro Aviator rank in the new on-ride photo. This replaces Ranger 1st Class. Solar Navigator replaces Space Scout and Star Flyer replaces Star Cadet.

The scoreboard at the end also now lists the ranks from highest to lowest instead of the other way around.

The video also shows the interactive targets lighting up in various ways, plus the training robot Buddy in the ride’s new opening scene. As the video reminds us, some targets are worth more, so riders should keep an eye out for targets that look different than the others.

Galactic Hero used to be 999,999 because that was the max the 6 digit scoreboard in the ride vehicle could show.

Now it is at least 1,000,000. Does the score max-out at 1,000,000, or can it keep going higher? With those screens, it looks like it can handle more digits if needed.

Looking forward to trying this out my next trip. The handheld blasters in DLR's Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters are much better than the ride mounted ones on the old Space Ranger Spin.

My understanding is it goes higher based on the awards levels.

Updated Ride Scoring System Explained for Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin

While we examine the many updates that have come to the Magic Kingdom laser shooting gallery ride, here is a quick breakdown of changes to the ride’s scoring system.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is currently in cast previews following a months-long closure for a variety of updates to the ride experience.

Fans of this Tomorrowland shooting gallery, rest assured, the core of the attraction remains unchanged. However, you may have to re-learn your approach to reaching the rank of “Galactic Hero” on your next ride through.

Let’s take a closer look at how the new target and scoring systems work following the ride updates.

All Zurg targets throughout the ride sets are now fully digital, and feature a variety of animations indicating different interactions as they occur.

The simplest, most immediate change is that each target will now react with a flash of sparking animation when a hit is registered from one of the ride vehicle blasters.

The two new blasters linked to each vehicle (and notably no longer attached by a fixed mount) are two separate colors for each rider: red on the left, green on the right.

The new Zurg targets will respond uniquely based on which color blast registers a hit. For green blasters, a quick effect showing green-hued electricity will flash on the target screen. For red blasters registering a hit, the target will flash with red sparks instead, as shown in the image below.

The location of these Zurg targets remain largely unchanged from the previous ride iteration.

It now appears that 95 points are rewarded for hitting each standard target. This will, however, vary based on new target conditions. The new digital score screen installed on each ride vehicle makes it easier to track the score changes across targets and their variable states.

More points are rewarded when targets enter a special “pulsing” state, which you can see in action in our ride POV at the bottom of this post.

In the photo below, the bottom left target is seen at a point in its “pulse” state, where a ring of white energy emanates from the center of the Zurg icon to its outer edges and repeats until it registers a hit. These temporary, seemingly randomized states offer more points for quick-reacting riders.

A third, special state presents multiple targets in a given area in a flashy, multicolored style for a very limited time, offering substantially more points for targets hit in the duration of that special rainbow state.

The digital screen also keeps active track of your personal rank as you move up the score brackets for the ride. The final scoreboard at the ride’s end also returns, though the order of ranks has been flipped from ascending to descending, relative to the highest score of Galactic Hero. See below for a side-by-side comparison (new board on the left, old on the right). The new order and updated rank titles are as follows:

  • +1,000,000 | Galactic Hero
  • 600,001 – 999,999 | Cosmic Commander
  • 300,001 – 600,000 | Space Ace
  • 100,001 – 300,000 | Planetary Pilot
  • 10,001 – 100,000 | Astro Aviator
  • 1,001 – 10,000 | Solar Navigator
  • 0 – 1,000 | Star Flyer
