Wk Of Oct 14 - WISH Walking/Running Club

It's official, I have a running addiction...

According to my schedule I was supposed to do 6 on Saturday, 12 on Sunday. Well, coming off a death cold, I knew I wouldn't hit those numbers.

Saturday I ran in a 5k (26:45:cool1: ). Then I sent DD and DH to a movie at 5 so I could attempt to finish my Sunday mileage (tried to flip-flop the days). Coach Harry and I went about 7.5 before we had to head back to beat the moviegoers home. I was changed and reasonably put together when they came home and here's the crazy part-- I didn't tell them I went running because I didn't want to listen to them... I'm officially hiding my addiction from my loved ones- that can't be good. ;)

Sunday I did 3.5 again with the bambino. It was just slow and steady, but I felt so much better that I am sort of getting back on schedule.

Jen117- trust me, colds will sap your will to live, much less run. You'll be ok (and I really think I did better in my 5k because I had taken some time off).

For those of you going to San Francisco and Tower of Terror, bring your necklaces!! I want to see one! Speaking of which, I think Robert needs to add a category for race bling on his site- we can all send in pictures of medals to help with decision making...:rolleyes1

Jen in GA

Kristen - I ALWAYS have to psyche myself up for a long run. I get so intimidated thinking about how far I have to go at times. I hope your run went well.

Mel – We will miss you at the ToT. I hope your daughter’s band performance goes well. Good luck on your 5K!

Eva – I would love to go to Cedar Point some time. I’m not sure I’m up for the ultra scary roller coasters but I love to watch them go around.

Monte – I hope you can get your feet situation turned around soon. I’m jealous of your flight price. I can’t find anything lower than $320 around here. The direct flight is over $600. Geez!!!

Lou – my DH has the same problem. A podiatrist is going to fit a special pad in his shoe this Tuesday to see if that helps.

Lisa – walking is tough! It’s hard for me to go at the required pace as well. That’s why I HAVE to jog a little. I know that’s not an option for you, though. My DH, Steve, can’t do any running because of his back issues. He has slowly built up to a 14.30 pace. His goal for the WDW half is a 14 min pace. Some of his secrets? Massages and stretching classes.

Steffwalks – it sounds like you had a good walk with a nice, furry companion.:goodvibes

Vic – Congrats on the 10-miler – no matter how you did it. 10 miles is 10 miles! Oh, and about that obsession…er, hobby. Wow! :thumbsup2

Kelley – as I mentioned in your race report – WTG!

Laurie – great run/great pace! :cool1:

Jen – sending some virtual chicken soup your way. I know it’s hard to train when you’re not feeling well.

Melissa :welcome: I'm looking forward to hearing about your training.

Terri – you’ve come a long way since your injury. WTG! I hope to see you and Leana next Sunday. I’ll be wearing a WISH shirt.

Duane – killer conditions. I admire you for getting out in all of that mess.

Renee – killer time on those last five miles! Whew! Sounds like your daughter is enjoying this running and doing well, too!

Dave – at which end doth the hot air release? :rotfl:

Stephanie – congrats on getting out there after that marathon. It’s got to be tough!

Christa – I think all the shows and rehearsals count for lots of XT time, don’t you? Ha!

Jen in GA – Here’s some more virtual chicken soup for you…just in case. However, it sounds like you don’t need it with that 5K time and all! WTG!

Sorry so long! Hope everyone has a good training week!

You flatter me. But since this gives me a chance to use mathematics, I cannot resist.

A mile is 1609 meters, so if you track is exactly .10 of a mile you've got 161 meters per lap. 400 meters would be 2.5 laps, and 200 meters would be 1.25 laps.

I would like to warn you, however, about speed work on indoor tracks. You have 2 problems, with the first being tight turns. If you are moving fast and turn hard and tight, you put a lot or torque on you knees and ankles. Be careful with that. Plus if the track is banked even a little you'll need to switch directions regularly, otherwise the downhill hip, knee, and ankle will get extra stress and injury may follow.

The second problem is indoor tracks are hard, and if you pound on them you can really hurt yourself somewhere. I'm not sure which is worse, the treadmill or the indoor track, both are hard, so you need to be cautious on both. I have set several wish board indoor track records, including one run of 92 laps on our 200 meter indoor track. I prefer the indoor track to the treadmill (I prefer almost any torture to the treadmill), but I need to be really careful on the indoor track. I reduce my leg lift and chop my strides just a bit to reduce the force of each foot strike.

Good luck and be careful.

I forgot to post...

My DH, Steve, got a new job within his company. :thumbsup2 The company was going through reorganization (cutbacks) and everyone in his division (across several states) had to "reapply" for a position. The process started in June and just last week, it was announced who would be staying in our town, who would have to transfer and who would not be "invited" to stay on. It was a very stressful time, to say the least. We can breathe a little easier now but at the same time we are sadden for those who were displaced. :sad1:

As for my training, I completed my long run, 10 miles, this past Saturday. I pushed myself too hard and I'm paying dearly for it. I completed the LR in 2:15. That's about a 13.30 pace. That's fast for me. Like I said, I'm paying for it today. Ouch!

Next up - Nike Women's half next Sunday. I hope this soreness goes away. :guilty:

Stephanie, I think daylights savings was changed to mid November didn't it??? I know it use to always be the weekend before Halloween but I thought for some reason this year they changed it. We have to look into that, I like the idea of a extra hour of partying!!!!

Kim

Hmmm, if that's the case, guess my calendar people didn't get the memo! Besides the ToT, I'm SO ready not to have to run in the dark in the morning anymore. It' almost 7am here before it's light out. Thanks for the heads up--I would've been an hour behind everyone.

Susie - I'm sore today, too. Hoping it goes away quick. I'll be wearing my WISH shirt on Sunday, too. Hope to see you and Leanna.

Ah, just what a Math teacher loves to hear in the morning!

BTW, Craig, thanks for your words of wisdom regarding my knee issues and your compliment, dear Dr., I do believe you made me blush! I am waiting patiently until Thursday for my MRI results. The first thing I am going to do is get my MRI results on a disc so I can take them to a real sports medicine guy, because I know for a fact he is going to tell me again not to run!

Jen in GA, an addition to running, can't be!;)

Terri, good job on those 100 crunches! Are you fully recovered from your injury?

Monica, a $167 airfare? How is that fair? I am lucky to find anything under $200 and I am in NC!

Susie, yeah for DH's new job!:)

Hi Sunny!

Vic, 10 miles, you got the steps in! Next time will be easier!

Kelley, wow, awesome marathon time! How are you today?

Laurieand Kristin, great jobs on your 12 and 14 milers, it must be so much nicer running those distances now that it is cooler.

Oh, Jen, hope you are feeling better. I really like airbourne.

Off to the gym for some biking, elliptical and weights.

I could totall be wrong, but that is the talk up here in the Great White North but my understand is that we did it because the US was???:confused3 Lets hope someone out there knows for sure....I will do a google search and see what I come up wiht.

Kim

Well, my google search shows it is now the first Sunday in November???

Anyone know for sure?

Kim

Sticking my head in here for a drive by since I am up to my you-know-what with work. Figures. They know i'm going on vacation soon. :headache:

Three miles on Saturday which hardly felt like a L/R at all. :thumbsup2 Guess I'm as ready as I'll ever be for ToT! :woohoo:

Hello, WISHers!

Today was a 50 minute run for me. I tried to keep a nice slow 10 minute pace but kept creeping it up. I definitely felt my 10 miler from yesterday; I would much rather get my LR done on Saturday so I've got a rest day after it. By the way, I got some new socks and have not had one blister since. Yay!

Kristi – Hope the circus was fun (the clowns freak me out!) and you got your 5 miles in today.

Christa – What show are you doing now?

Terri – I am so jealous of you doing that Nike half for the Tiffany necklace! I look forward to your report, esp. to find out how hilly it is!

Stacey – Hail and snow? Yikes!

Eva – I do my speedwork on the treadmill because I am so bad at regulating my pace. Hey, we need to get CP to do a race!!

Monte – 10 inches would shut us down for at least 3 days!

WWDave – Welcome back from the land of the Dazed!

Stephanie – Hope the shoulder blade is okay. PD for you!

Sunny – Hope your healing continues to go well; PD comin’ your way!

Kim – I also thought the time change was different this year; not sure though.

Jen in GA – Is there some kind of 12 step program for us?

Craig – 92 laps!?! Did you at least get to change direction?

Susie – So glad DH’s job situation is settled. Hope you recover from your 10 miler. Did you try the ice bath after? I fought it but now swear by them.

Colleen – Biking, elliptical and weights? That’s quite a work out!

Judy – Just keep counting down!

Happy training, all!
Renee

OK, got through teh rest of last week and all of this week, but this bear of little brain has remmebered little and is running out of lunch time.

rosy - MfM has us do two weeks where the mileage goes up and one down until we hit 14 miles. From tehre on, it's every other week.

mel - :sad1: :sad1: :sad1: I so WISH you were joing us, but I understand. BTW, I am jealous. I really miss teh challenege of breaking new ground with mileage. You'll be fine!

Sunny - SO good to see you!

SWDave - Thought of you this weekend. Ran Kensington and Islad lake bike path!

ZM Melissa - Welcome!!!!

Eva - Sorry about the headache! Those stink!

I'm a little late in the conversation, but for those who are afraid of ToT....

I hate teh Demon Drop. I can do anything else in teh world, but don't liek that and get no thrill out of it.

I hate being scared, took me several years to do Haunted MAnsion, because I don' tlike being scared.

My boss did ToT in 04 and told me I HAD to do it. Said teh special effects were awesome and that I'd love it.

OMG! It quickly became a new fave. Not scary and a lot mroe fun than a regular drop ride like Demon Drop.

DOn't be afraid!!! As an added bonus, I'll hold the hand of anyone who needs it (except wwDave and MIke ;) ), because I'll be riding solo for the post race party.

OMG, I can't wait!!!

SOrry to all I missed. I'm trying to get back in the swing of things!

Oh yeah, I did a pretty good 6-miler on Saturday. Very hilly and freezing, but at least it wasn't hot.

Well, my google search shows it is now the first Sunday in November???

Anyone know for sure?

Kim

Kim - It appears, based on my Google search, you are right. The info below is from a Navy web site and explains the new time(s) in detail. Personally I think this stinks because it's too dark and cold in the mornings anymore. I liked the old way better.

http://aa.usno.navy.mil/faq/docs/daylight_time.php

Starting in 2007, daylight time begins in the United States on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. On the second Sunday in March, clocks are set ahead one hour at 2:00 a.m. local standard time, which becomes 3:00 a.m. local daylight time. On the first Sunday in November, clocks are set back one hour at 2:00 a.m. local daylight time, which becomes 1:00 a.m. local standard time. These dates were established by the Energy Policy Act of 2005, Pub. L. no. 109-58, 119 Stat 594 (2005).

Not all places in the U.S. observe daylight time. In particular, Hawaii and most of Arizona do not use it. Indiana adopted its use beginning in 2006.

In 2006, daylight time begins on April 2 and ends on October 29.
In 2007, daylight time begins on March 11 and ends on November 4. [New law goes into effect.]
In 2008, daylight time begins on March 9 and ends on November 2.
Many other countries observe some form of "summer time", but they do not necessarily change their clocks on the same dates as the U.S.

Daylight Saving Time to End Oct. 29, Expand by Four Weeks in 2007

The U.S. Department of Transportation issued a reminder today that daylight saving time will end at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 29, and that next year the daylight saving time period will begin earlier and end later for most of the United States.

Daylight saving time is currently observed from the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October. As a result of legislation enacted by Congress in 2005, beginning next year daylight saving time will begin the second Sunday of March and end the first Sunday of November. As a result, in 2007, daylight saving time will run from March 11 to Nov. 4.
When daylight saving time ends, clocks will be set back one hour, providing an additional hour of daylight in the morning.

Federal law does not require any area to observe daylight saving time. But if a state chooses to observe daylight time, it must follow the starting and ending dates set by the law. In those parts of the country that do not observe daylight time, no resetting of clocks is required. Those states and territories include Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Marianas.

Daylight saving time is a change in the standard time of each time zone. Time zones were first used in the United States in 1883 by the railroads to standardize their schedules. In 1918, Congress made the railroad zones official under federal law and assigned the responsibility for any changes that might be needed to the Interstate Commerce Commission. In the Uniform Time Act of 1966, Congress established uniform dates for daylight saving time and transferred responsibility for the time laws to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

well, poo on the new time change date. Guess I'll go change my calendar. That's what I get for buying my calendar at the discount store--wonder what other dates are wrong;) Thanks Kim, Lou, and Carrie for helping this wayward soul:laughing:

Did 3X1600 at 7:48 with 3 minute recovery intervals. Felt pretty good. Tomorrow is cardio-tennis and maybe some weights. See ya'll later!

I will try to catch up later today!
Did a SR of 4.4 on the trails at lunch. I am trying to keep it nice and slow b/c I have a 20 miler on Friday.
Time: 40:35, Pace: 9.13, but I know the 1st mile was 8:30. Took JRT with me and on the way back, she had to smell and pee on everything!:sad2:

My feeling about the 20 miler!
1. I am really excited about it. I mapped out a course Saturday night. It includes the 1st 18 miles of the CHarlotte Marathon that I am training for. I will have to carry directions with me and hope not to get lost. The reason it only has 18 mile of the marathon course is b/c I will have to run 1 mile to get to the "starting" point and 1 mile back. This is b/c of where I am planning to park.
2. I am really worried! This run is going to show me what I can expect time wise for the marathon. Unless I have acid reflux or something unexpected happens. Isn't it funny that I am worried about a 20 mile training run? I guess it is really no big deal. My goal is to tri for 9 MPM the whole way.:wizard:

Thanks for the info...unfortunately, we cannot change direction at our rec...it's regulated by day. I have yet to do any speed work there and probably won't now that I read all that...lol! I don't think the track is banked and it's a floating track so it's not as hard as those you might find on slab. The turns on the other hand might be an issue. I did most of my winter running on a treadmill last year and the only thing that kept me going was ladders or pickups because it broke the monotony. It really seamed to improve my overall pace and I'm probably going to do similar stuff this year. Until then I'll do my hills and fartlek outdoors and enjoy the nice weather!! Thanks again Craig...you seem to be the indoor track pro!!

Craig - I think I have you beat.... Last year I did 11 miles on the indoor track which is 132 laps. We have a 1/12 track and the tight banked turns bite!!!! But running in Wisconsin in the winter can cause problems, especially those unexpected snow storms!!!!

Hi guys! Hope everyone had a good weekend. I got in 5.04 mi on Saturday with my San Francisco ladies in 58:35. After that we chowed down on french toast and chatted. I'm going to miss this running group! Yesterday was curling and I have barely curled at all in my life. Yup, well I'm a huge clutz! The whole game I was paranoid about slipping because I don't want to get hurt for my next 3 weekends of racing... Last rock, final end...I'm sweeping at just before the rock stops I lose my balance and fall flat on my back, taking out all the rocks. We had to give the other team a point and play another end. I'm not too much worse for the wear besides a big pain in my rear and in my neck. I think my pride hurt worse than anything.

Tonight is fitball - midweek mileage is planned for 12 - then I'm flying out on Friday!! I'll look for a WISH shirt there, and I'll be sure to say hi to you. My WISH shirt hasn't arrived, so I won't be sporting one of those, but rest assured I will see you when I see the lime green.

And not to worry - I will be sporting my Tiffany's necklace at ToT!
Jen in GA or anyone else doing the Nike+ Virtual Half?

Jen

Sorry, but it's that math thing again, I cannot resist.

92 laps * 200 meters = 18,400 meters / 1609 meters per mile = 11.436 miles.

Renee - I do change directions, usually every 20 laps, and I also get water at those changes so every 2.5 miles I switch and drink.

It is weird, but once I'm in rhythm on the thing I fall into a trance and keep going. Plus being on it for a while, then having others join me, then still being on it when they leave allows me to feel completely superior in every way. Or perhaps just dumber.

Craig
