Wk of Mar 5--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

I took another rest day yesterday. Had to pick DD8 princess: up from school and run errands in the afternoon. So I decided I would take another rest day, and try to get a walk outside today. Just letting my legs recover a little this week for my learn to run program that starts next week.

Mel/Chimera - those are great pictures from your 1/2 marathon. Congrats again!!!

Christa - Good luck on your sprint tri this weekend! I can't wait to hear your report for how it comes out.

OK..I got my swim start time for the tri. It is in a pool so they are starting people every 10 seconds. I start at 10:31:30. The tri starts at 0900 so I am way back. There are 500 signed up and only 79 start after me! :rotfl2: I put too high of a swim time in, but oh well....there is a break after me and 2 other people swim so maybe no one will hit me.
I will swim easy today for only 30 min.
:wizard: to everyone who is hurt.
Sunny - I am not sure about Bree. She is (maybe) doing the preg thing someday soon maybe. :confused3 Ron, he may do it. Will ask. I still have to clear it with DH.

Morning Everyone :surfweb: ,

I really don't feel like I am getting much done this week in the way of exercise but then again - I'm a little off track after having to go to the wake on Monday.....It pushed everything back a day.

Tonight - I have my weigh in at Weight Watchers, I hope I went down. Anyhow, after that I hope to make it to the gym to do my 4 mile run/jog on the treadmill.....I also hope to fit some bosu ball work in there too!

Is it me or does it feel like there aren't enough hours in the day to get everything done that you want to? :confused3

I am so behind on everyone's post in the past couple of days.....I try to keep up but it's just been hard lately.

Well, off to work - everyone have a great day!

Jodi

Good morning, everyone!! :sunny: I run for the first time tonight since Saturday, I'm hoping my knee doesn't start hurting again. :scared: I haven't had any knee pain since Sunday, when I did 15 minutes on the elliptical, so I'm really hoping that I'll be fine. I tried to do pilates last night, but the entire time I was on the floor, I just kept thinking about all the dog hair on my floor (apparently it's a misconception that short haired dogs don't shed as much  ), so I wasn't really paying attention to the DVD and I was doing all the stretches wrong, so I just stopped and went upstairs to bed. Tonight, I am vacuuming my floor!! ;) Oh, I do have good news, when I was on my little running hiatus, I gained 2 pounds, for the past week or so, I have been really watching what I've been eating and keeping my calories right around 1300. I weighed myself this morning and I lost my 2 pounds and I'm back down to 110. :woohoo: :woohoo: So then I ate a cupcake. JUST KIDDING!! ;)

Mel-- :rotfl2: :rotfl2: You are a riot!! Great race pictures. How are your legs feeling?

Christa--Here's more pixiedust: pixiedust: for your tri! I'll be thinking about you at 10:31 Saturday morning. Tell Bree good luck!!

Dana--Don't you hate shin splits?? I always get them when I go from the road to the treadmill and then the treadmill back to the road. Hope you are feeling better!! And if you find some good strength training, pass it on!

Tiff--That is so cute about your son! Good for you for getting him interested in exercise at such a young age!!

Lily--I might have missed something, are you doing Minnie? I would love to be doing Minnie, but that is the same day as the Pig. At least we are all mentally running or walking together!! And I can't really complain too much since Stephen and I are visiting the Mouse that Thursday (May 11).

To everyone I missed :wave2: !!

I better get to work, although I worked so hard yesterday, I don't really have anything right now. I guess I'm just too good for my own good! ;) I'll report back after I run, it might be late, Hines has "school" tonight, so I'll be home from 5:30-6:30 and then not home until about 8:30. I could run at 5:30, but I don't want to go to his class all stinky, but in all honesty, with all those dogs there, how would they even know it's me??!! :teeth:

Hi, everyone! Didn't go to the gym last night. Ran an errand for DS12's musical "on the way" to the gym and then lost momentum and went home and had dinner instead! The interesting thing is that my weight is down 1.7 pounds this morning (still within my "set point weight range" unfortunately). :confused3 I really don't get it, though I have a theory. I guess when I go to the gym at night, I eat dinner later, probably eat more volume (even if not many points) and perhaps, retain water in my joints/muscles? Because I just can't seem to get my weight to go down when I am exercising. UGH!

Anyway, hoping to do a TM wog tonight though I've had a migraine or sinus headache every day this week. Howard is doing his Caesar Rodney Half Marathon on Sunday and MAN, the course looks so LONG!!! I can't believe we covered that distance in January. Funny enough, it will be about 25-30 degrees warmer here on Sunday than it was in Orlando, with a high that day of 70! I hope he stays hydrated.

Okay, back to work! :grouphug:

I'm starting a thread: RTB Sept 2006 Sign up. If you are interested, please post on the thread. It will be easier to count heads that way :cool1: :thumbsup2 :goodvibes :teeth:  :moped: :cheer2: :woohoo:

Krista Here is some info I got a long time ago about shin splints.

While every lower-leg injury has its specific biomechanical causes, all are rooted in tight calf muscles and relative weakness in the front leg muscles. What's going on is that your tight calves are pulling up on your heel, which in turn pulls the front of your foot down. This puts strain on the muscles in the front of your leg, which unfortunately are not strong enough to resist the pulling. Ouch.

This is very, very common in runners, since running tends to exercise the calf muscles more than those in the front. As a result, you may eventually experience one or many of the injuries in your lower leg. But fear not, a little rest and a lot of stretching and strengthening will fix you up and possibly make you a better runner, too.

What I do to help get rid of them is to actually get a 5 pound dumbbell, put it on the floor and stick my toes underneath it, then try to lift it off the ground with my toes. It helps to strengthen that muscle that runs along the shin. I also take ice baths after my run if I start to notice that it is really hurting. When I was running before I got pregnant, doing those two things essentually got rid of the shin splints completely. HTH.

Good morning everyone! :sunny:

Today I did my 45 min @ 3.8 @ 1%. I was still sore and stiff from riding but I made myself walk anyway. I'm glad I did. I could have very easily laid in bed!

Mel - OMG! :lmao: "fartlek" :rotfl2: Excellent pictures! :thumbsup2 Congratulations!

Christa - Your Tri is on Sunday? I'll be thinking of you, even if I'm not in the dairy aisle at Stop & Shop! Best of luck with it! :cheer2: I just know you'll do fabulous!

Krista - You weigh 110? Geez, ONE of my legs weighs that! :rolleyes2

Hi Cam - Sorry about the headaches.

OK who's not in the mood to work today???? :wave2:

Pick Me!!!!!

I have to though. been a rough week and I've got anothe rone to come. Took last night off for a hockey game (have tics that will soon go to waste). Besides that, I've kept up with my workouts.

After next week, my life should be better, but I'll probably be drownning in what I put of this week.

Miss a day and miss so much!

cingoutloud - I have been on a huge plateau for about 2 months. The scale finally moved, the last 40 lbs is coming off so slow it is killing me. I just keep saying I am gaining muscle, but when the scale stays the same it just doesn't mean as much.

Judy - I don't think I could ever work out a 5am, I get up for work then and just showering kills me.

Kathy - PD for the foot

Jen - I also bought a tyvek jacket, it wa cheap enough. I also had on an old tshirt so I didn't care about throwing it away. As for gloves, I didn't have any with me, but an older & wiser runner suggested socks. So I ran with a pair of old socks on my hands. It really worked pretty well. I loved the weather this year but being from New England the cold was a clessing, the thought of running in 70s or 80s was terrifying.

Sunny - How cool is that RTB. I am beyond way too slow, but will cheer you all on.

Judy - Like the rest have siad - totally different muscle groups so I wouldn't worry. I know when I changed to the bike & arc trainer I was shocked at how much I hurt.

I am getting so nervous about the Run to Remember this weekend. I am just hoping to do a bit better than WDW. But I will be happy to finish, if you around look for the last one across the line - that will be me! :goodvibes

So I have tapered off on intensity, think I will bike for a bit today, then lay off on Fri & Sat.

Hey, guys, can I share something with you?
I just realized that I have been frequenting the 50+ pounds to lose weight watchers boards for so long that I hadn't even realized that I really want there to be a 25+ pounds to lose board because I "only" have to lose about 35 -40 (depending on the day! ;) ) to get to goal! :cool1:

Woo hoo Cam! That is awesome!!! Thanks for the Main Street Memory Moment! :goodvibes

Mickey - I'm sure you'll be fine. If you weren't at least a little nervous, then I'd be worried. ;) Good luck

Cam :grouphug: That's awesome....it's so nice to realize how far you've come. You really should be so proud of yourself! Hope those headaches are better today!!!

MickeySP: LOADS of pixie dust :wizard: for your race to remember!!! We'll be cheering you on from afar!!! :cheer2:

Carrie: The hockey game sounds fun :). You deserve a night off...especially if life has been crazy!

Judy! I agree with everyone...don't know how you get out of bed so early to workout. Totally impressed! :thumbsup2 And the walk was so good for those sore muscles....even if they didn't want to go ;).

Dana: Yes...those shin splints are soo painful! I figured that's what you're dealing with. Sometimes I actually just get sore muscles that aren't shin splints...minor difference...less painful. Sounds like you have the plan to work them out. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that old gremlin doesn't show up for me. I am a little worried about switching from road running to trail running...but I soooo want to do this trail run in June that I have to get out on those trails soon. I'll need anti-shin splints pixie dust :wizard: !

Sunny: Thanks for starting that RTB thread. I'm really tempted. I ran 2 miles at 10.3 mpm today and felt pretty good. I have no idea after that because I veered off my course and have no clue what the final miles were. I really need a Garmin! I am watching a few used ones on ebay. Eventually I want an HR monitor/Garmin but I don't have the funds. So a used will do me fine for now. But back to RTB...not sure I could maintain a 10 mpm or less over longer distance? I'll see how my 5K pans out in April. That should be a good indication. The only positive is that I run hills regularly so at least the topography won't be too hard on me :teeth: .

Today was swimming. I am so surprised at how much easier its getting. :thumbsup2 Also did pilates. I have bunco tonight so I hope I can resist the goodies that will be there. I've been doing good all week, just need to remember it wont be worth it to ruin that over.

Cam-that's great!

Keep up the great work everyone!

MickeySP -- Sending you pixiedust: and :goodvibes: for your Run to Remember. I am sure you will do awesome! And, I know you don't want to be the last person crossing the finish line, but the fact is that where you are in the pack doesn't matter -- you WILL be crossing the finish line! That is a huge accomplishment! :cheer2:   :teeth: :thumbsup2 :sunny: :cool1:
Don't worry -- all your WISH friends will be with you in spirit! :grouphug:

Allright..... I haven't excercised since Tuesday and probably wont get any in today. I'm giving up on my dh who never wants to get up at five and buying an IPOD nano tonight for my wogs (yep - stealing that word.... loved it!).

I keep waiting around for him to get home and he keeps coming home late...... no more - head phones and an armband IPOD will now be my best friend.

OK.. not really.... a woman should never make her best friend a battery operated device...... :crowded: at least my foodsaver takes a cord.

love to all and excercise hard!!! January will be here before we know it - or at least that's what I keep telling myself.

My first run (well, really a wog...) tonight after getting home from taking care of all the funeral details - managed a full 30 minutes, think I did close to 2 miles. The exciting part is that there's a big hill on our street that I really never planned to attempt, not even when I thought I was ready for the Minnie, and I ran ALL THE WAY UP tonight! I was afraid that after a week off I'd really have to take it slow, but I felt great.

Cam - I can sympathize with the headaches. Fought them all week, too! Congrats on your progress.

Cingoutload - I think you're better off with the nano anyway! It has to be more dependable!

MickeySP - Good luck this weekend!

Hi WISH Team!

Everyonoe is managing to get through this week somehow I read. I'm in the "should be doing more" group.

I really love the idea of the RtBR, but alas, I will NEVER be at that time. Be there in spirit for whomever gets to go. What a fun idea.

Minnie and me doesn't look like it will be happening. While DH said to look into it, I am finding air fare way to $$$ and now cannot get off from work. That is still an outside possibility of time off, but unless I get to split a room rate with someone and find cheap airfare, it is definitely not a possibility anyway.

Cingoutload, good for you to not let DH hold you back in your training. Hope you can get those steps in somehow. It may be lonely, but you can do it!

Cam, congrats on only 25 left! You are so doing it!

Monte, that is such a nice thing to go and cheer for family and as a surprise too! How wonderful!

MDM, Way to go! You are doing it!

Shin splints, don't forget the shoes:
How can I prevent shin splints?
Prevention is best accomplished with smart training. If your sport involves high impact activities, make sure you have days that are low-impact (e.g. cycling or swimming) and no running. Increase the intensity and duration of exercise gradually. When you are increasing your activity, perform more low-impact exercise in the beginning. Make sure you have proper footwear that has been replaced regularly (life span of most running shoes is about 500 miles or 6 months). If you can run on grass or trails for some of your training (rather than pavement) that will also help prevent shin splints.
Going through a phase just now. I hate this time of year. It is annual physical and something always crops up. Well I'm getting through it, but it is interrupting my normal lifestyle as of now. Saturday is a 10-miler for me and my goal is to get it done in about an 18 minute per mile pace. I should have no problem with it. I think it will actually be a nice day.

Just dropping in to say Hello to everyone :) I cannot believe the Minnie is less than two months away. Wow how time is flying!

Cingoutloud -- You may find that you don't mind training alone. I do most of my training alone because DH is so much faster than me. And, somehow, it was so much more satisfying knowing I was doing it just for me, at my pace, on my initiative. I hope you enjoy the process.

Lily -- So sorry to hear you might not make it to Minnie weekend. I was really looking forward to seeing you there.

MDM -- Glad to have you back. Awesome job on your wog! :cool1:

Kim -- Is that you in your siggie? It's so nice to put a face to the name and a beautiful one at that.
